Joel Sternfeld: Nags Head
Sternfeld's candid images of an Outer Banks summer, which went on to inform his seminal work American ProspectsIn the summer of 1975, facing surgery with the potential of paralysis, a young Joel Sternfeld went off in search of a last idyll--and found it in Nags Head, on North Carolina's Outer Banks. From June to August he captured the beach town floating in time, a sense of spatial and temporal fluidity. Sternfeld's images show beachgoers of all ages enjoying scenes of leisure and partying in what became his first body of work addressing a season.Yet this summer sojourn was tragically broken by the news of the death of his brother; Sternfeld returned to New York, never to go back to Nags Head. Eventually he began working again and one day ventured to Rockaway Beach, Queens. Here he took a picture in which "all at once the ugly scene appeared beautiful to me" the hues of sand, apartments and sky fuse into a cohesive whole. This photo, with its conceptual roots in Nags Head, would lead to the color structures of Sternfeld's magnum opus American Prospects, his ambitious realization of what he had always wanted to do: follow the seasons across America.A major figure in the photography world for nearly five decades, Joel Sternfeld was born in New York City in 1944. He has received numerous awards, including two Guggenheim fellowships, a Prix de Rome and the Citibank Photography Award. Sternfeld holds the Nobel Foundation Chair in Art and Cultural History at Sarah Lawrence College.
Gordon Parks: Born Black
Parks' impactful images from the forefront of the civil rights and Black Power movementsOriginally published in 1971, Gordon Parks' Born Black was the first book to unite his writing and his photography and also the first to provide a focused survey of Parks' documentation of a crucial time for the civil rights and Black Power movements.More than 50 years later, this expanded edition illuminates Parks' vision for the book and offers deeper insight into the series contained within. The original publication featured nine articles commissioned by Life magazine from 1963 to 1970 supplemented with later commentary by Parks and presented as his personal account of these important historical moments. Born Black includes the original text and images, as well as additional photographs from each series, spreads from the 1971 book, early correspondence and reproductions of related Life articles. The nine series included in Born Black include a rare glimpse inside San Quentin State Prison; extensive documentation of the Black Muslim movement and the Black Panthers; his commentaries on the deaths of civil rights leaders Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.; intimate portrait studies of Stokely Carmichael, Muhammad Ali and Eldridge Cleaver; and a narrative of the daily life of the impoverished Fontenelle family in Harlem. These selections have come to define Parks' legendary career as a photographer and activist. This reimagined, comprehensive edition of Born Black highlights the lasting legacy of these projects and their importance to our understanding of critical years in American history.

Il Dolce Far Niente
This book is a gorgeous, photographic ode to the magic of southern coastal Italy in the summer by renowned travel, fashion, and lifestyle photographer Lucy Laucht. A languorous August afternoon. Captured by photographer Lucy Laucht, these lyrical scenes of Naples, Ischia, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Puglia, Sicily, and the Aeolian and Egadi Islands are an ode to the Italian way of summer and that distinctly Italian art of sweet idleness.

Legacy of Lies. El Salvador 1981-1984
Previously unpublished images by the Time magazine photographer illuminate an important chapter in Latin American history. In the early 1980s, the Cold War clashes that had bloodied other parts of the world shifted to Central America. Following the overthrow of Nicaragua's Somoza government by the left-wing Sandinista rebels in 1979, the United States sought to prop up El Salvador's right-wing military government as a backstop against home-grown insurgents and rising Soviet and Cuban influence. Its role helped fuel a lethal 13-year civil war. Legacy of Lies contains previously unpublished black-and-white images that American photographer Robert Nickelsberg produced on behalf of Time magazine and is supplemented by essays by renowned journalists. Robert Nickelsberg worked as a Time magazine contract photographer for nearly thirty years, specializing in political and cultural change in developing countries.

Nonhuman Photography
A new philosophy of photography that goes beyond humanist concepts to consider imaging practices from which the human is absent, as both subject and agent. Today, in the age of CCTV, drones, medical body scans, and satellite images, photography is increasingly decoupled from human agency and human vision. In Nonhuman Photography, Joanna Zylinska offers a new philosophy of photography, going beyond the human-centric view to consider imaging practices from which the human is absent. Zylinska argues further that even those images produced by humans, whether artists or amateurs, entail a nonhuman, mechanical element--that is, they involve the execution of technical and cultural algorithms that shape our image-making devices as well as our viewing practices. At the same time, she notes, photography is increasingly mobilized to document the precariousness of the human habitat and tasked with helping us imagine a better tomorrow. With its conjoined human-nonhuman agency and vision, Zylinska claims, photography functions as both a form of control and a life-shaping force. Zylinska explores the potential of photography for developing new modes of seeing and imagining, and presents images from her own photographic project, Active Perceptual Systems. She also examines the challenges posed by digitization to established notions of art, culture, and the media. In connecting biological extinction and technical obsolescence, and discussing the parallels between photography and fossilization, she proposes to understand photography as a light-induced process of fossilization across media and across time scales.
Australian Women's Historical Photography
Australian Women's Historical Photography: Other Times, Other Views examines the photographs produced by six talented women photographers against the historical backdrop of settler violence towards Indigenous Australians, the First Women's Movement, the Great War of 1914-1918, Australia's imperial occupation of New Guinea, the final years of Chinese Nationalist Party rule in China and debates about photography's status as an art form. Women's works from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been down-played or even ignored in existing accounts of Australia's cultural history, and this study is aimed at rectifying this situation. At the same time, the book demonstrates why amateur works are just as important as commercial works to our understanding of the past. ● Methodologically, the book draws on scholarship from history, art history, anthropology, sociology, gender studies and cultural studies to create an interdisciplinary critical framework that will be of interest to a broad range of academic and archival researchers. It is also a framework that is critically sensible of its own groundings in the postcolonial and feminist present thereby reflecting what is meaningful at any given historical moment. ● Finally, this book responds to the pronounced lack of visibility of Australian realist, documentary and commercial women's works. The few histories of Australian women's photography that exist pay more attention to modernist and contemporary works, and when they do mention earlier women photographer's works, they seldom go into much detail. They also ignore the works of the earliest Indigenous women photographers, women who traveled and made photographs abroad. By presenting a carefully contextualized and detailed study of works by six Australian women photographers who worked in the late colonial era and whose works in all sorts of small and surprising ways chronicled the impacts of some of the periods more disturbing as well as enlightened events, we will not only add to knowledge of Australian women's photography, we will also broaden and enrich the frames of women's photography and Australian history more generally.
Julia Margaret Cameron
A bold new study of Julia Margaret Cameron's Victorian photographs, charting the legacy of colonialism following the 1857 Indian Uprising. Julia Margaret Cameron, the celebrated Victorian photographer, was a child of the colonies. Born in 1815 in Calcutta, she was the daughter of a governing official of the East India Company. After relocating to London in 1848, Cameron was embraced by other British expatriates and a celebrated cultural network. This circle included literary personalities like Thackeray and Tennyson, painters and critics associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and political figures like Thomas Babington Macaulay and Lord Lansdowne. In 1857, Indians rebelled against British rule, and in London, Cameron became absorbed by news of the Uprising. In the aftermath of the revolt, national and imperial politics transfixed England, some seven years before Cameron took up photography. The impact of those forces, and the inspiration of the literary, artistic, and political works produced by her circle, influenced her earliest imagery. Through close readings of these photographs, which she assembled in photographic albums, this book exposes how Cameron embedded in her work a visual rhetoric of imperial power. Bettina Rheims. 40th Ed.
Since her first photographs in the late '70s, Bettina Rheims has defied the predictable. From her series on Pigalle strippers (1980) to her cycle on the life of Jesus in I.N.R.I. (1998), from Chanel commercials to Gender Studies (2011), her work has shaken up traditional codes of representation and pushed restlessly at the breaking point between two great human preoccupations: beauty and imperfection. This Rheims retrospective showcases more than 300 photographs from 35 years of daring, often defiant photography. Personally selected and assembled by Rheims, the collection brings together renowned series such as Chambre close, H矇ro簿nes, and Rose, c'est Paris. Spanning commercial work and artistic series, the retrospective impresses with each turn of the page, as much for the strength of each image as for the thrilling variety of Rheims's subjects and aesthetics. With equal attention to anonymous subjects cast in the street as to global celebrities including Kate Moss, Madonna, Monica Bellucci, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell, the book showcases Rheims's particular interest in female fragility and strength, and of the magic encounter between model and artist which disrupts codes of so-called eroticism to build up a new image system for womanhood.

Look at the U.S.A.
A personal chronicle of post-9/11 America, at war and at home. Through reportage and memoir, in photographs and words, Look at the U.S.A. documents the major fault lines that have defined this era, beginning with the war in Iraq and ending with the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.Fueled by ideology, insecurity, ambition, and a deep fascination with war, Peter van Agtmael began documenting America's war in Iraq in 2005. So began a photographic odyssey that would span more than two decades generating work that grew from a deep need to understand and peel back the layers of his troubled society.Confronting the mythologizing of war and seductive nature of conflict on the American psyche, Look at the U.S.A. explores the disconnect between the intergenerational wars and the home front, juxtaposing American troops in combat with their grieving families at home and the recovery of the wounded. As the book's narrative progresses, the gaze begins to widen, to the imprints of nationalism, the election of Donald Trump, militarism, and race and class on American society.Layered with van Agtmael's personal accounts, observations, and interviews with those he has encountered on his journey, Look at the U.S.A. is a damning, sometimes ironic critique that will make it one of the seminal photobooks on war.

Bridges
Bridges is a long poem that wends its way through the structures that cross the R穩o de La Plata / River between Buenos Aires and its suburbs, creating a spatio-temporal reality in which biographical situations are interwoven with political events. The concrete presence of the bridges, with names such as Pueyrred籀n, La Noria, Avellaneda, among others, marks the limits of the capital city and the beginning of the periphery surrounding it, characterized by a vastly different landscape. In Genovese's historical memory, many scenes from her childhood and adolescence merge with the revolts and uprising of the Peronist working class and the repressive military dictatorship.---Buenos Aires is sometimes said, with a shrug or a wistful sigh, to "turn its back" on its river: as if the city goes about its business without a palpable sense of communion with the water that defines it. Alicia Genovese's long poem Puentes, tenderly translated by Daniel Coudriet as Bridges, does the very opposite. In one evocative scene after another, Genovese crosses both literal and metaphorical bridges to explore the transformations in a landscape, a family, an era, and a self over time, uttering "nomenclatures / that refuse / the anonymity / of a non-place / and affirm / a unique space / with a skidding / of images passed by, / returned in perception." Coudriet's translation of this rich work flows along as whole and complex as the body of a river: gentle, formidable, sonorous, full of surprises.-Robin MyersAlicia Genovese's poignant meditation on bridges understands them in all their complexity-sometimes as link, sometimes as obstacle, always as "both precarious and solid." Holding the sweet and the bitter gracefully suspended on either side, Genovese probes our imperfect impulse to connect and to keep moving, to find solutions that then turn into problems. "A bridge is a leap and an ellipsis," she tells us. Rarely has this in-between space been so movingly limned.-Donna Stonecipher

Louis Carlos Bernal: Monograf穩a
A landmark survey of one of the most significant American photographers of the twentieth century Best known for his intimate portrayals of barrio communities of the Southwest United States, Louis Carlos Bernal made photographs in the late 1970s and 1980s that draw upon the resonance of Catholicism, Indigenous beliefs, and popular practices tied to the land. For Bernal, photography was a potent tool in affirming the value of individuals and communities who lacked visibility and agency. Working in both black and white and in color, he photographed the interiors of homes and their inhabitants, often presenting his subjects surrounded by the objects they lived with--framed portraits of family members, religious pictures and statuaries, small shrines festooned with flowers, and elements of contemporary popular culture. Bernal viewed these spaces as rich with personal, cultural, and spiritual meaning, and his unforgettable photographs express a vision of la vida cotidiana--everyday life--as a state of grace. The first major scholarly account of Bernal's life and work by the esteemed historian Elizabeth Ferrer, Louis Carlos Bernal: Monograf穩a is the definitive book about an essential photographic artist. Ruth Orkin (Photofile)
Ruth Orkin (1921-1985) always dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, and although that ambition was thwarted until later in her career, she quickly found other ways of engaging with the world of images. She was given her first camera at the age of ten, and by the age of seventeen, she was cycling across the United States from Los Angeles to New York, documenting her trip in albums of annotated photographs. In the early 1940s, she settled in New York, joining the Photo League and making her name with photo stories for major magazines such as Life, Look, and This Week.In images that range from celebrity portraits to bird's-eye views from her apartment window, from children at play to the experiences of a lone American tourist in Italy, Orkin's photography retains a cinematic sense of the passage of time and allows the humanity and charisma of her subjects to shine through.
The Group for Mutual Improvement
The black and white photographs in The Group For Mutual Improvement were taken in a vacant lot behind photographer Jordan Baumgarten's home in Philadelphia.Over a period of 10 years, Baumgarten and his neighbours spent much of their time together in this lot. His book is a document of these gatherings. The title is drawn from the Junto, also known as the Leather Apron Club-- a diverse group of individuals Benjamin Franklin brought together in colonial era Philadelphia for the purpose of mutual improvement. They would gather in a tavern to debate questions of morals, politics, current events, philosophy, and local businesses. Baumgarten's group was much less formal but the discussions no less vital.
The Tlingit in Sitka
A rare window into the changing lives of Alaska Natives between the late 1800s and 1920sLured north by the Klondike gold rush, Elbridge W. Merrill settled in Sitka, Alaska, and took up a career as a professional photographer. Merrill developed a good rapport with the town's Indigenous Tlingit community, and his images of the Tlingit provide an invaluable historical and ethnographic record of their daily lives, religious life, and art.Sergei Kan presents a first-ever collection of Merrill's photographs, which includes images of important Tlingit events like funerals and a famous ku.矇ex'(potlatch), commissioned portraits, and subsistence activities and other scenes of everyday life. Respected and admired by Sitka's entire multiethnic community, Merrill also photographed locals with Russian-Alaska Native ancestry and Euro-American backgrounds and expressed a passion for Alaska's spectacular settings through images of nature. Drawing on forty-five years of research, Kan complements the collection with an expert biography of Merrill while analyzing the ways he portrayed Sitka's Indigenous people.Illustrated with 150 images, The Tlingit in Sitka invites readers to discover images of Tlingit life in early colonial history and the artist who dedicated his life to recording it.
Steve McCurry. Animals
In Animals, we discover a different side to the famed photographer who skillfully explores animals' complex relationship with humans and the environment.Tenderness abounds, particularly in scenes of unkempt street dogs sleeping contentedly next to a human. But there's also a kind of essential solitude, with animals belonging to no one and simply wandering through life with only their survival instincts to guide them. We witness camels caught in the crossfire during the first Gulf War; a shepherd from Northern Pakistan tenderly feeding his goats; Beverly Hills designer dogs; race horses on a Hong Kong rooftop; an elephant in Thailand, and more images selected by McCurry from his vast archives.Through McCurry's lens, we discover an appreciation for each creature's beauty and silent dignity. This kaleidoscopic collection is at once a beautiful travelogue and a touching tribute to the creatures who share our planet.
Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness, Volume II
The highly anticipated second volume to the widely acclaimed and celebrated self-portrait series, Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness In Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness, Volume II, Zanele Muholi explores and expands upon notions of Blackness, and the myriad possibilities of the self. Since the publication of the first volume in 2018, Muholi has continued to photograph themself in a range of new international locations. Drawing on different materials or found objects referencing their environment, a specific event or lived experience, Muholi boldly explores their own image and innate possibilities as a Black individual in today's global society, and--most important--speaks emphatically in response to contemporary and historical racisms. Ren矇e Mussai, curator and historian, brings together written contributions from more than ten curators, poets, and authors, building a poetic and experimental framework that extends the idea of speculative futures and the potentiality of multivalent selves. Powerfully arresting, this collection further amplifies Muholi's expressive and radical manifesto. As they state in the first volume, "My practice as a visual activist looks at Black resistance--existence as well as insistence."

Matthew Genitempo: Jasper
An evocative photobook capturing the rugged isolation of life in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and MissouriInspired by the life and work of the poet and land surveyor Frank Stanford, these photographs of hermetic homes and men living in solitude were taken in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri by American photographer Matthew Genitempo. By capturing the foggy landscapes, cluttered interiors and rugged men that are tucked away in the dark woods, Jasper explores a fascination with running away from the everyday. The work bounces between fact and fiction, exhibiting the reality and myth of what it means to be truly apart from society.Jasper is the photographer's first major project, originally published in 2018 and now a rare book. This second edition enables old and new followers alike to delve into Genitempo's evocative exploration of the American landscape. Produced with minimal text, the caption-free sequencing of Jasper encourages readers to wield their own imaginations and surrender themselves to the points of resonance among the photographs.Matthew Genitempo (born 1983) is a photographer and book publisher who lives and works in Texas. His first monograph, Jasper, was short-listed for the 2018 Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Prize and awarded the Hariban Juror's Choice Award. He published his second monograph, Mother of Dogs, in 2022. His forthcoming third monograph, Dogbreath, will be released in 2024.
Women’s Camera Work
Women's Camera Work explores how photographs have been and are used to construct versions of history and examines how photographic representations of otherness often tell stories about the self. In the process, Judith Fryer Davidov focuses on the lives and work of a particular network of artists linked by time, interaction, influence, and friendship-one that included Gertrude K瓣sebier, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, and Laura Gilpin.Women's Camera Work ranges from American women's photographic practices during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to a study of landscape photography. Using contemporary cultural studies discourse to critique influential male-centered historiography and the male-dominated art world, Davidov exhibits the work of these women; tells their absorbing stories; and discusses representations of North American Indians, African Americans, Asian Americans, and the migrant poor. Evaluating these photographers' distinct contributions to constructions of Americanness and otherness, she helps us to discover the power of reading images closely, and to learn to see through these women's eyes.In presenting one of the most important strands of American photography, this richly illustrated book will interest students of American visual culture, women's studies, and general readers alike.

Mountain Rescue Vehicles
Mountain search and rescue is one of the most demanding rescue activities of them all. It take place under very severe and often dramatic conditions like high altitude, snow and ice, crevasses, glaciers and avalances. It is the stuff of real heroic acts and romance. The occassional demand for assistance, but on a larrge scale, is then often carried out by volunteers, mainly locals due to the demand for local area and climate knowledge. This book is mainly focusssed on the Alps, but also visits outher European mountaineous areas. The special conditions has led to the development of specialized equipment and the most visible is the widespread use of helicopters which have a high degree af maneouverability in inacessible terrain and ability to carry a payload. The helicopter services work together with traditionsl ground based teams and sometimes move these teams to the search area. Helicopters swiftly move injured persons to a medicsl facility. Professional mountain rescue services are quite common near tourist resorts like ski resorts where there is a regular demand. The authors have made a similar book on American Air Rescue and the styles have both similarity and differences between the two continents. We hope the reader will enjoy our selection of photos.

Travelling on Titanic
As a passenger on the first two legs of Titanic's ill fated voyage, Father Francis Browne SJ's photographs are an immensely important record. As well as taking a unique set of photos, Father Browne also assembled an incredibly valuable album of Titanic material such as an original deck plan, menus, letters to him from fellow passengers, contemporary newspaper cuttings and other documents, many of which are reproduced here. Thanks to the gift of a ticket from his uncle, a young Jesuit named Francis Browne travelled on the Titanic during her maiden voyage from Southampton, to Cherbourg to Cork. Invited to remain with the ship as it crossed the Atlantic, Fr Browne was saved from possible disaster by a telegram from his Jesuit superior ordering him to "get off that ship". When the unthinkable happened and the Titanic sank, Fr Browne's photographs appeared on the front pages of newspapers all around the world. For many years the photographs of Fr Browne were forgotten until 1985 when Fr Eddie O'Donnell happened across an old tin trunk in the Jesuit archives and re-discovered 42,000 photographs, including the Titanic collection.
