The Moods of Presque Isle
The Moods of Presque Isle is a book of photography, poetry, and prose which provides a visual treat for your mind and eyes. The poetry and photography blend to produce reflections and emotions within the reader. The setting is an eight mile long sand peninsula jutting out into Lake Erie. Formed over the last thousand years and constantly moving with Lake Erie currents, it is the most visited state park in the Pennsylvania system of parks. It is a haven for natural beauty, birds, animals and rare plants. Presque Isle seems to be one of the places on earth that God paused to create something special. A place where man could stop and reflect on what is right about the world. A place to pause for a moment to drink in the beauty that nature has to offer. It is an enchanting place where colors seem brighter, air softer and where time moves slowly. Presque Isle is one of those places calm enough for you to get quiet inside yourself. A place where solitude and reflection are greater gifts than sun and sand. The subjects of the poems and prose in the book are varied. They run from colors of fall to the tiny kingdom found on the forest floor; from water lilies to the horrors of 9/11; from an approaching storm to a lovers hand and hand walk on the beach. Season, colors, moods, and dreams fill the pages of this book of reflections and life experiences. As you read each poem, you will be able to slow down, take a minute to reflect on the complementary photographs accompanying the words. The theme of the book is the beauty, quiet, and solitude offered by nature. The author believes that if you love nature, nature will open up a whole new world for your enjoyment. The book is an attempt to paint words and photography as one and create a "Mood" with nature for the reader.

The Dazed Decades
1991 saw the publication of the first ever issue of iconic fashion and culture magazine DAZED & CONFUSED. A publication which has lead and defined tastes for over three decades, its visual iconography is known world over. Co-founder and DAZED's first Photographic Editor, Rankin set the visual tone the magazine is now known for. Internationally recognised as one of the UK's leading photographers, it was during THE DAZED DECADES where he honed his craft. Rankin's works from this period form a manifesto about how to view the world, a political statement communicated not with words but with a camera lens. So here we explore five rules for viewing and acting. Across our chapters, FEEL IT, TV IS BORING, EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES, ACCEPT NO IMITATIONS, and ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS, we share with you Rankin's way of being. Part self-help, part provocation, THE DAZED DECADES are a map for existence expressed through popular culture.
Hot House Hybrids
In layered compositions that hover somewhere between the mediums of photography, collage, and painting, artist Jenee Mateer allows chance pollination, evolution and the interplay of control and chaos to reveal a connection between gardening and making art. Playing with the metaphorical connection between flowers and the female or feminine she celebrates a diverse group of women, transformed and unified by bold color, pattern and botanical forms, re-affirming our connection to the natural world.

Picture Perfect Poems
Jim Wyman is the last full-time resident on a one-lane, dirt, dead-end road at the tip of a long peninsula in the middle of a very large lake in northern Vermont. He was born and raised in the foothills of the Longfellow Range of the Appalachian Mountains in western Maine. Never having lived more than 50 miles away from 45 degrees north latitude, he has grown to appreciate the texture of the woods, fields, and hills of Northern New England, and the myriad of colors-ranging from the cold black and white of winter to the light-filled prism of a hardwood forest in fall. In an effort to capture and share his mind's eye view of this beauty, Jim studied film photography and quickly realized he was allergic to darkroom chemicals. Then came digital photography. As a published poet, Jim admired the work of Ann Atwood and her gift for combining poetry with photography. It was then he began to experiment with the possibility of blending his poetry with his photography using digital photographic applications and techniques. His intention was to meld the visual impact of New England landscape photography with the mind's eye view-the poem. This book is the result of his efforts.

Portraits in Life and Death
Portraits in Life and Death is the only book of photographs published by Peter Hujar during his lifetime. The twenty-nine portraits of creative people--ranging from William Burroughs, Susan Sontag, and John Waters to Larry Ree, founder of the Trocadero Gloxinia Ballet Company, and T.C. (whose identity is unclear)--possess a haunting beauty and degree of psychological examination that is both offbeat and riveting. Following the portraits come eleven images that can only be described as devastating: pictures of semi-preserved, clothed bodies of nineteenth-century Sicilians found in the arid catacombs beneath a church in Palermo. There is no necessary connection in the photographs themselves or between the two sections of the book, yet the pictorial progression from life to death is an emblem of the journey we all take. The living subjects seem to be meditating on the mortality that is limned with such profound effect in the catacomb pictures. In different ways, both groups of images speak to the basic fears and emotions that we carry with us, somewhere beyond our consciousness. After viewing this extraordinary book, it is almost impossible not to make those connections and interpretations or be moved by Hujar's consistent ability to convey what appears to be the inner spirit of his subjects. Even so, an air of nonchalance, even gaiety, hovers over the photographs. The book is odd, oblique, sometimes opaque, and certainly deeply felt; but it sticks to the mind like a burr. It will be noticed. Once seen, it cannot be forgotten.

Picturing the Ottoman Armenian World
The Armenian contribution to Ottoman photography is supposedly well known, with histories documenting the famous Ottoman Armenian-run studios of the imperial capital that produced Orientalist visions for tourists and images of modernity for a domestic elite. Neglected, however, have been the practitioners of the eastern provinces where the majority of Ottoman Armenians were to be found, with the result that their role in the medium has been obscured and wider Armenian history and experience distorted. Photography in the Ottoman East was grounded in very different concerns, with the work of studios rooted in the seismic social, political and cultural shifts that reshaped the region and Armenian lives during the empire's last decades. The first study of its kind, this book examines photographic activity in three sites on the Armenian plateau: Erzurum, Harput and Van. Arguing that local photographic practices were marked by the dominant activities and movements of these places, it describes a medium bound up in educational endeavours, mass migration and revolutionary politics. The camera both responded to and became the instrument of these phenomena. Light is shone on previously unknown practitioners and, more vitally, a perspective gained on the communities that they served. The book suggests that by contemplating the ways in which photographs were made, used, circulated and seen, we might form a picture of the Ottoman Armenian world.
We the Spirits
Photographer Jason Gardner travelled across 15 countries to document traditional Carnival in its myriad of manifestations. Seeking out villages and towns where festivals are at their most folkloric or least visited by outsiders, Gardner collaborated with ethnographers and local experts to engage with and understand each festival. A selection of his vast archive of photographs made over a period of 15 years will be published in We the Spirits. Collectively, his images dispel stereotypes of Carnival and illustrate the complex diversity of local customs united by universal themes.
Barbie(tm): The World Tour
For the press tour following the record-breaking release of Greta Gerwig's award-winning, acclaimed Barbie movie, producer and star Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal immersed themselves in some of Barbie's most iconic outfits and curated vintage pieces, then approached designers, from Giorgio Armani to Donatella Versace, to create looks inspired by the doll-size originals. Many of these looks were not seen as the official Barbie press tour was cut short--so Margot and Andrew worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Steamline luggage at the airport, and beyond. Accompanying McDean's sumptuous photography are original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel's Barbie fashion archives, and the designers' sketches and Polaroids from fittings, layered into evocative collages by Fabien Baron, who conceived and produced the shoots and art-directed the book. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks (from Olivier Rousteing and Michelle Ochs to Manolo Blahnik and Jeremy Scott), this unique book blends the serious chic of high fashion with the serious fun of Barbie world--the dolls, the history, and the style that have captured imaginations for 65 years. BARBIE(TM) and associated trademarks and trade dress are owned by, and used under license from, Mattel. (c)2024 Mattel.
water moves
If photos are messages, then Hans Fahrmeyer is one of the most prolificmessengers of today and of classic times. From his apprentice days oflearning his photography craft in the lost art of darkroom developing, youknow this man wrestle more out of an image than most emerging and longtime photographers. It's his use of lens, light, experience and passionwhich massages his images to an unexpected portrayal. But Mr. Fahrmeyer is also part sociologist, psychologist, comedian and lifecoach. Watching him in the studio or on location, he can either be the flyon the wall when he has to be, or the sorcerer, pulling out the best of thetalent in front of his lens. His latest book, Water Moves, is an illuminating dance of beautiful maleimages married with mirrors, water, sensuality and balance. There's ablend of powerful images with technical insight. The images becomeforceful yet arresting. He has produced a collection that mixes thecasualness of the snapshot with the artistry of classical photographer. His subjects capture the eye for their immediacy, beauty, and movement. His three previous books (Colors of Men, Between Men and Women, andBetween Men) reflect his stylization. But the new images in Water Movesare even more lively and stronger then the earlier ones. The photos are atimeless provocation as Hans demonstrates the gravity of his models intoan art form. Fahrmeyer's use of beautiful muscled men weaves with thereflective properties of water to create memorable masterpieces.Water Moves makes one yearn for an encore. In cinema, we know by thelast scene, there's a sequel planned. By the time you get to the last page, you're hoping for the release of more from Hans Fahrmeyer. Well done.

As a professional climber, he spent his early career on high-risk expeditions that tested his unique ability to capture stories that were largely out of reach to others. Bi-Polar, a title that refers to Richards's own diagnosis with Bipolar 2 at age fourteen and the career that has literally taken him to both ends of the earth, presents 300 of the most compelling images of Richards's career. Organized by the emotional polarities that exist in his life and work, including hope and fear, pride and shame, awe and contempt, and finally, the singular, love, this stunning visual collection is a celebration of the tempests of the mind and how our greatest hurdles, when seen through a different lens, can become our greatest strengths. Spotlighting jaw-dropping landscapes, disappearing ways of life, the intersection of humans and animals, and more, Bi-Polar invites us to consider how art can connect us to ourselves, others, and the beautiful world we live in.
Joel Meyerowitz
An early advocate of color photography, Joel Meyerowitz has impacted and influenced generations of artists. For fifty-eight years, the master photographer has documented the United States' ever-changing social landscape.During the late 1960s, Meyerowitz carried two cameras: one loaded with monochrome stock, the other with color. Just how, when, and why American fine art photographers switched from black-and-white image-making, prized within the gallery system, to color photography, once seen as the preserve of tourist photography, has been the cause of much debate. In Joel Meyerowitz: A Question of Color, Meyerowitz tells the story of his early days as a photographer when he was told that serious photographers took black-and-white pictures. "But why," he asked, "when the world is in color?" He then bought a color camera and various rolls of film and began to experiment with color techniques: a passion he continues to pursue.
Pao Houa Her: My Grandfather Turned Into a Tiger... and Other Illusions
Pao Houa Her's first major monograph, My grandfather turned into a tiger ... and other illusions, explores the fundamental concepts of home and belonging: illusion, desire, and loss. Pao Houa Her's work draws inspiration from a myriad of sources: apocryphal family lore; portraits of the artist's community and self; and reimagined landscapes, with Minnesota and Northern California standing in for Laos. The compelling and personal narratives are grounded in the traditions and contemporary metaphors of the Hmong diasporic community. My grandfather turned into a tiger brings together four of the artist's major series, including the title work which reimagines her family's history before leaving Laos. Other work deals with a scandal within the Hmong community in which hundreds of elders were swindled as part of a fraudulent investment scheme built around the promise of a new Hmong homeland. In another series, tonally rich black-and-white still lifes of silk flowers collected by her mother are presented alongside images of flowers that adorn the digitally manipulated, hyper-colored popular backdrops used in Hmong photo studios and on dating apps. This beautifully designed monograph showcases Her's keen eye on the line between ersatz and authenticity; as the artist has stated, photography is "a truth if you want it to be a truth." My grandfather turned into a tiger is the result of the Next Step Award, a partnership between Aperture and Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York, in collaboration with the 7G Foundation. Each cover is unique, featuring up to thirty-two jacket iterations, but is anchored by the same sticker on the front and back.
Serpent Tongue
Serpent Tongue explores a unique moment in Guatemalan history through the lenses of power, identity and memory. In 1954, during the height of the Cold War, the CIA carried out a coup to overthrow the first democratically-elected president in Guatemala. In the months leading up to the coup, the CIA Station Chief in Guatemala City was Grossinger's grandfather. Dying long before Grossinger was born, his presence still loomed like a mythological creature throughout much of her childhood. Serpent Tongue explores Guatemalan history through the lenses of power, identity and memory.
Ernest Cole: The True America
The first publication of photographs taken by Ernest Cole in the United States during the turbulent and eventful late 1960s and early 1970s After fleeing South Africa to publish his landmark book House of Bondage (1967) on the horrors of apartheid, Cole resettled in New York. He photographed extensively on the streets of New York City and documented Black communities in cities and rural areas of the United States--traveling across the country in the months leading up to and just after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The pictures reflect both a newfound freedom Cole experienced in America and an incisive eye for the inequalities of systemic racism. He released very few images from this body of work while he was alive, and the pictures were thought to be lost entirely until the negatives resurfaced in Sweden in 2017. This treasure trove provides an important window into American society and establishes Cole's place in the history of American photography.

Midcentury Memories. the Anonymous Project
Rewind back to the midcentury, before the age of Instagram and Snapchat, where people were using 35mm cameras loaded with color film to document both monumental and mundane moments in their lives. They took pictures of their loved ones, their vacations, their celebrations. They memorialized the births of babies; a child in a cowboy outfit; a new color television set; sightseeing in National Parks; fishing trips; lazing on the beach; weddings; office parties; family reunions; holding hands, kissing and dancing. Imagining these lives and the possible stories that lie behind the images is what makes The Anonymous Project such a compelling journey into our past. The passing of time is enhanced by the book's narrative that begins with scenes of early childhood and ends with seniors, with all the stages of life in between. It all started with an innocent purchase on eBay. Filmmaker Lee Shulman bought a set of 35mm Kodachrome slides--anonymous family photos--and was so taken with what he calls "the emotional value of these slices of life" that he knew he had to have more. He launched The Anonymous Project in 2017 and has since acquired around 700,000 images either by donation or via vintage sellers. As noted photography critic Richard B. Woodward writes in the introduction: "It is significant--and fascinating--that in virtually every image here, photographer and subject seem to know one another. In this embracing album of humanity, no one exists in isolation. There are no strangers here."This curated collection of around 150 images taken between the 1940s and '70s offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of these anonymous subjects. The locations, dates, and the subjects may be unknown--but these shots taken by skilled amateur photographers, and the fascinating stories they contain, are universally familiar.
Portrait and Place
A richly illustrated history of photography in one of the epicenters of African modernity When the daguerreotype first arrived in sub-Saharan Africa in the early nineteenth century, local kingdoms still held power in Senegal and the French presence was limited to trading outposts along the coast. The pioneers of photography in Senegal worked within, across, and beyond the borders of colonial empire, expanding the medium's possibilities and contributing to a global visual language. Portrait and Place explores these unique encounters, providing an in-depth and nuanced look at the images made at the intersection of Black Atlantic, Islamic, and African cultures. Giulia Paoletti takes readers on a visual journey from the 1840s, when the oldest-surviving daguerreotype from West Africa was made, to the 1960s, when photography became the most popular medium as Senegal achieved its independence. She discusses some of Africa's most celebrated modernists, such as Mama Casset, and also offers insights into lesser-known photographers like Oumar Ka and once-anonymous figures such as Macky Kane. Paoletti examines both professional and amateur artists in genres ranging from portraiture to landscape and across media such as glass painting and lithography. Featuring a wealth of breathtaking images published here for the first time, Portrait and Place brings to life the important histories of photography on the African continent.
The Beautiful Flower Is the World
"Jerry makes it look so easy. Every time I open this book, my camera gets heavier." -- Daniel Arnold Legendary skateboarder and artist Jerry Hsu started his blog NAZI GOLD in 2009 as a repository for the cell phone photos he'd been collecting alongside his more traditional photography and film practices: shots of friends and strangers, roadside curiosities, and anything else that seemed to merit instant sharing with both peers and the public. In the ensuing years, the site grew from an exercise in visual note-taking into a uniquely hysterical embodiment of both Hsu's keen artistic sense and his razor-sharp wit. Documenting his journeys through the high and low trappings of our culture, Hsu's work captures everything from bootleg t-shirts and bathroom stall graffiti to unexpected truths and the occasional startling moment of humanity. An unerringly creative and endlessly clever chronicle of the deep ironies of our modern world, The Beautiful Flower Is the World, now in a lush hardcover second edition, collects the best of Hsu's blog photography into a compelling and immersive whole.
The Elements - Air
He first started seeing images in the clouds in April or May of 2021. His first memory of cloud images were on the football field at Willow Glen High School, home of the Rams. While on a short vacation to Santa Cruz California his son Jonathan pointed out to him a string of clouds that spelled out the word Resurrection. The next day while back home he would photograph the word Holy in the clouds. The next image viewed the same day was the word Blessed. The neighbor girl next door, Maya also saw this in the sky. She is the daughter toJose and Patricia and sister to Leah and Zoe. Their dogs name is Angel and they have witnessed or been shown miraculous images in the sky over the last two years as well. The Heavens declare the Glory of God! The images represented here are evidence of that.

Jim Mangan: The Crick
In the crumbling community of a fundamentalist Mormon sect, the boys who remained behind reinvent themselves as modern-day cowboysAmerican photographer Jim Mangan began The Crick as a photographic survey of the unorthodox architecture of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) houses in the Utah-Arizona border town of Short Creek. He soon found that the bigger story lay in a group of teenage boys navigating their disintegrating community, fractured after leader Warren Jeffs was imprisoned in 2011. These subjects were children at the time of the fallout, who remained with their families in Short Creek as others elected to leave the town altogether. The Crick is a meditation on religious succession, patriarchal systems, zealotry and fraternity in the life built by these young men. Mangan's pictures transport the reader into an alternate reality of the boys' making: where they explore the rugged terrain of southern Utah, northern Arizona and southern Nevada on horseback, emulating old-time explorers of the Western frontier. His "ecological and sociological approach" to this series, spanning five years, depicts the playfulness of youth against the capricious landscape of the American West. In both their real and imaginary worlds, these subjects have gained a knowledge of and closeness to nature that has largely been lost in the conventions of modern life. The collection of photographs is accompanied by an essay by author Judith Freeman and a text by apostatized former FLDS member and artist Roman Bateman.Jim Mangan (born 1973) is a photographer and filmmaker best known for his images of the American West. His work has been exhibited at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, the Kunst im Tunnel in D羹sseldorf and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2015, his project Blast was shown at the Sundance Film Festival.
