Viewing Photography in Post-Dictatorship Latin America
This book examines the archival aesthetic of mourning and memory developed by Latin American artists and photographers between 1997-2016. Particular attention is paid to how photographs of the assassinated or disappeared political dissident of the 1970s and 1980s, as found in family albums and in official archives, were not only re-imagined as conduits for private mourning, but also became allegories of social trauma and the struggle against socio-political amnesia. Memorials, art installations, photo-essays, street projections, and documentary films are all considered as media for the reframing of these archival images from the era of the Cold War dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, and Uruguay. While the turn of the millennium was supposedly marked by "the end of history" and, with the advent of digital technologies, by "the end of photography," these works served to interrupt and hence, belie the dominant narrative on both counts. Indeed, the book's overarching contention is that the viewer's affective identification with distant suffering when engaging these artworks is equally interrupted: instead, the viewer is invited to apprehend memorial images as emblems of national and international histories of ideological struggle.
Australia's Uncommon Places
Welcome to the stunning and unforgettable world of rural Queensland and New South Wales in Australia. This photo book is a journey through small country towns, their old buildings and other places that many of us may never have had the chance to experience. Through the lens of a digital camera, the photographer has captured the beauty, mystery, and rawness of a land that is as rugged as it is enchanting. These images were taken using a unique approach that combines modern digital technology with the timeless beauty of 1970s 35mm film. The result is a collection of photographs that transport us back in time and make us feel as though we are experiencing these moments firsthand. As you turn the pages of this book, you will discover uncommon places that are quintessentially Australian. From abandoned buildings to dusty roads, from sunburnt plains to old farm buildings, each photograph is a testament to the resilience and beauty of this land and its people. We often drive past small towns or old farm houses with rusty cars sitting next to dilapidated farm buildings. We don't stop and take the time to look at the beauty that can be found in simple settings. There are stories there, in these places. Stories about old buildings, shops, service stations, fire stations, churches and even an abandoned tennis court on the side of a rural country road. Through these images, enjoy the sense of wonder and adventure and explore outback Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Hopefully this book will inspire you to seek out your own adventures and to experience the magic of this incredible part of the world. This first volume takes you on a road trip through rural Queensland and Northern New South Wales through vivid pastel like images. In the tradition of a photography great, Stephen Shore, you are invited to immerse yourself in the captivating images that lie within these pages.

As an artist myself, I have always observed art as a manifestation of human culture. Just as culture varies significantly from one society to the other with a little shift in geography, even in our own country, so does art in its different forms and uniqueness. Thus the three entities are deeply inter-linked to each other. Through my sketches, I have tried to portray realistic flavors of a few sections of the society in different parts of India. My work will be successful only when it is capable to strike a chord with the emotional quotient of my readers. Being a son of the soil to the ""Cultural Capital"" of India, Kolkata is woven around my soul. That is why my readers may find proportionately more anecdotes in and around the 'City of Joy'. -Indranil Mukherjee

An-My L礙 Between Two Rivers
At once quietly grand and pervasively eerie, An-My L礙's photography and art explores scenes of conflict and political intrigue, both real and simulatedThrough her photographs, videos, installations and embroidered works, An-My L礙 considers the cycles of global history and conflict, the complexities of diaspora and the sensationalizing of warfare. Published to accompany the artist's major survey at the Museum of Modern Art, An-My L礙 Between Two Rivers is the first catalog to present L礙's three-decade practice in different mediums, with seven photographic series presented alongside textiles, installations and newly rediscovered films. The two rivers in the title refer to the Mekong River in Vietnam and the Mississippi River in the southern United States, two important geographic locations that appear in the artist's photography from her earliest to her most recent works. An essay by curator Roxana Marcoci examines the full sweep of L礙's creative practice; essays by scholars La Frances Hui, Joan Kee, Thy Phu and Caitlin Ryan each focus on specific series; and two texts by writers Monique Truong and Ocean Vuong bring poetic sensibility to L礙's singular perspective.An-My L礙 (born 1960) was born in Saigon, Vietnam, and came to the US in 1975 as a political refugee after the fall of Saigon. She studied at Stanford University before attending Yale School of Art, receiving her MFA in 1993. Her previous publications include Small Wars (2005) and Events Ashore (2014), and she is the recipient of the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (1997) and the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2012). L礙 teaches at Bard College and lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Frontiers
FRONTIERS: WILD, SEMI-WILD, HUMAN.... A photographic Novel, is a book of photographs I have taken or worked on over a period of 6 years from 2012 to 2017. I love the concept of writing a novel through photography and that's why I called this book of photographs a photographic novel, for there is a strong narrative dimension in these photographs that creates visual literature. And this narrative link, for a good part, points to the content in the images. They are three countries where I took these photos from; Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa, three neighbours who share borders, languages, cultures, fauna, flora, etc, joined by a bond as old as creation, itself. I decided to work from the wild, to the semi wild, to human, exploring frontiers in these worlds, juxtaposing these worlds, one against the other or all three together in a photo, sometimes obsessively focusing on a single spot, repetitively creating different story strands from that one place, and then combine photography with other visual art medias like painting and drawing thus creating entirely different artworks. It is the essence of my work, to operate at the limit between natural and human landscapes, reality and fiction, nature and humanity, by bestowing an actual dimension to the utopian. The photographs are a celebration of this.Tendai Rinos Mwanaka is a multidisciplinary artist, editor, publisher and producer with 26 individual books and over 27 curated anthologies published in the US, Northern Ireland, UK, Cameroon and Zimbabwe. He has 3 music albums playing in at least 18 radio stations in the US, Canada, UK, France, Israel, Brazil and Australia and hundreds of paintings and drawings, thousands of photographs, some exhibited, published and sold. His art pieces have appeared in over 400 journals in over 35 countries and his books and writing are translated into at least 11 languages.
As We See It
In As We See It, Suzanne Newman Fricke invites readers to explore the work and careers of ten contemporary Native American photographers: Jamison Banks, Anna Hoover, Tom Jones, Larry McNeil, Shelley Niro, Wendy Red Star, Beverly Singer, Matika Wilber, William Wilson, and Tiffiney Yazzie. Inspired by As We See It, an exhibition of these artists' work cocurated by Fricke in 2015, the book showcases the extraordinary achievements of these groundbreaking photographers. As We See It presents dialogues in which the artists share their unique perspectives about the history and current state of photography. Each chapter includes an overview of the photographer's career as well as examples of the artist's work. For added context, Fricke includes an introduction, a preface that explores the original exhibition of the same name, and an essay that challenges the ghost of Edward S. Curtis, whose work serves as a counterpoint to the photography of contemporary Native Americans. The text is designed to be read as a whole or in sections for anyone teaching Native American photography. As We See It is an invaluable addition to the library of anyone interested in Native American photography and will be the key source for teachers, researchers, and lovers of photography for years to come.
Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream in
Enticing, ethereal photographs from two visionaries who used portraiture as an exploration of the "dream space"Living and working over a century apart, British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron and American photographer Francesca Woodman experienced vastly different ways of making and understanding images. Yet the two share more similarities than expected. Both artists had brief careers lasting less than 15 years; while neither enjoyed popularity and success during their lives, they have posthumously received widespread acclaim. Their portraits feature ethereal, experimental qualities that connect them soundly across time. The beautifully illustrated catalog, accompanying the exhibition of the same name at the National Portrait Gallery, London, includes Woodman's and Cameron's best-known photographs as well as less familiar images. The book begins with three feature essays that consider Cameron and Woodman simultaneously and moves on to 10 thematic sections interspersing works by the two artists. Portraits to Dream In makes new connections between the work of two innovative photographers who pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium and experimented with ideas of beauty, symbolism, transformation and storytelling to produce some of art history's most compelling and admired images.Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-79) took up photography in the 1860s and was soon elected to both the Photographic Society of London and the Photographic Society of Scotland. She photographed her friends and family as well as notable figures of Victorian England, including Charles Darwin, Ellen Terry and Alfred, Lord Tennyson.Francesca Woodman (1958-81) worked in both the United States and Italy and made her first mature photograph at the age of 13. Her lifetime exhibitions include the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts (1976); Galleria Ugo Ferrante, Rome (1978); and the Alternative Museum, New York (1980). Her artist's book, Some Disordered Interior Geometries, was published by Synapse Press in 1981.

Eugene Richards: Remembrance Garden
An exquisitely somber portrait of Brooklyn's Green-Wood cemetery across the seasonsIn March 2020, after suffering from a severe bout of Covid, Eugene Richards sought out a safe place to walk and recuperate, and became entranced with Brooklyn's much-loved Green-Wood Cemetery. Founded in 1837 and proclaimed a National Historic Landmark in 2006, the 487-acre burial ground and arboretum is the final resting place of more than 550,000 people. Over the subsequent years, Richards made nearly 100 visits to Green-Wood, photographing both poetical details and grand vistas in rich color, across the seasons and in all weather, creating lyrical images of snowbound headstones, grand mausoleums, intimate epitaphs, the encroachments of moss on stone and the wear of time on all things. The photographs in Remembrance Garden were taken between April 2020 and September 2023. Richards intersperses his images with names and dates inscribed on grave markers and deeply personal memories, creating a grand and moving portrait of the legendary cemetery.Photographer, writer and filmmaker Eugene Richards was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1944. Following college and studies with photographer Minor White, Richards joined Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) and was sent to Arkansas, where he helped found a social service organization and a community newspaper, Many Voices. After publishing his first books--Few Comforts or Surprises: The Arkansas Delta and Dorchester Days--Richards began a 40-year career as a freelance editorial photographer and artist, producing a wide range of stories about the human condition in America and abroad. He has authored 17 photographic and textual books, including Exploding into Life, The Knife and Gun Club, War Is Personal, The Blue Room and, most recently, In This Brief Life. He directed and shot seven short films, including The Rain Will Follow and Thy Kingdom Come. Richards has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Journalism Award and the Kraszna-Krausz Book Award for Photographic Innovation.
Omen: Phantasmagoria at the Farm Security Administration Archive
Dark, surreal scenes hidden in an iconic photographic archive of Depression-era AmericaDrawing from approximately 40,000 works of the Farm Security Administration Photographic Archive (1935-42) housed at the New York Public Library, Omen reviews and reframes this landmark project of modern American documentary photography. The monumental project features works by storied photographers such as Russell Lee, Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn, Walker Evans, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, Gordon Parks and Jack Delano. Many of the more iconic images that arose from this initiative were instrumental in constructing a hegemonic narrative of triumph against adversity in Depression-era America. In scrutinizing the backgrounds and secondary characters of some lesser-known photographs, however, a more turbulent story emerges.Omen is co-edited by Mexican artists Le籀n Mu簽oz Santini and Jorge Panchoaga, providing a fresh perspective on this quintessentially American study. The image sequence amplifies the eerie details in enlarged, stark black-and-white images, creatively cropped and abutted together to form insidious connections. These hidden stories are premonitions of the visible and invisible specters of systemic injustice that characterize American society, their cycles renewing with each successive generation. Thus, Omen at once serves as a mirror for the anguished reality of today, and as a device for reflection on how historical and documentary photography is read and understood: taking the editorial gaze to its ultimate consequences. The book includes a narrative text by novelist and poet Lucy Ives.

The Bigger Book of Breasts
The Big Book of Breasts was an immediate best seller when it debuted in 2006. Its 396 pages introduced readers to the top naturally bountiful nude models of the 1950s, '60s and '70s, amazingly mammiferous beauties including Virginia Bell, Roberta Pedon, Mary Waters, Keli Stewart and many more. The one and only complaint was that there was no biographical information on these curvaceous cuties, no lists of their magazines and films to give readers a more intimate connection. We listened, and The Bigger Book of Breasts answers! Not only are there more pages with all new photos of your favorite big breast models of the '50s through '70s, there are also personal profiles for each and every one. Which model married comedian Richard Pryor? Who inspired Russ Meyer's first film? Where are those free Mary Waters loops? And yes, Roberta Pedon is alive and well! Further updating the "Bigger" theme, we added the 12 most incredible, natural, and provocative breast models of today, gathered from across the world by Berlin-based photographer, Bernd Daktari Lorenz. Nadine Jansen, Luna Amor, Miosotis Claribel and the incredible Hitomi Tanaka prove breasts are bigger than ever, and bigger is beautiful, for both breasts and books. Wrap it up with stunning photos of our original cover girl Kelly Madison and The Bigger Book of Breasts is a bigger treat for all.
Small World
This is a new and extensively revised edition of Martin Parr's classic photobook Small World. First published in 1996 Small World is one of the most popular and most important of Martin Parr's books. It has been in print continuously since its first publication. This revised and extended edition includes more than 80 photographs and features many of Martin Parr's most iconic images. It is a biting, very funny satire in which Parr looks at tourism worldwide, exposing the increasingly homogenous 'global culture' where in the search for different cultures those same cultures are destroyed. In a world of 'carbon footprints', global warming and climate crisis, the issues that Parr raised almost thirty years ago when the book was first published are even more relevant today. Whilst Parr's larger‐than‐life troupe of tourists appear willing participants in an omnipresent consumer culture they are also bemused victims - at the mercy of larger social forces and locked into their insatiable craving for spectacle. Small World's citizens become a symbol of Western society's prosperous freedoms, declaring their power and their rights to travel, to choose and to consume.
