Masahisa Fukase: Sasuke
A tender and joyful portrait of cat companionship from the author of The Solitude of RavensIn 1977, photographer Masahisa Fukase turned his lens toward a new companion: his cat, Sasuke. "That year I took a lot of pictures crawling on my stomach to be at eye level with a cat and, in a way, that made me a cat. "I didn't want to photograph the most beautiful cats in the world but rather capture their charm in my lens, while reflecting me in their pupils," he wrote of these images. "You could rightly say that this collection is actually a 'self-portrait' for which I took the form of Sasuke and Momoe."Featuring tipped-on cover images, this gorgeously made book is arranged in four chapters, organized around the chronology of Fukase's life with his cats. As so often in his work, these tender images also express the photographer's subjectivity and his connection to his subject.Born in 1934 on the island of Hokkaido, in the north of Japan, into a family of studio photographers, Masahisa Fukase was meant to take over the family business, but instead he launched a career as a freelance reporter in the late 1960s. In 1971 he published his first photography book, dedicated to his family. In 1974, he cofounded the Workshop Photography School with Shomei Tomatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, Noriaki Yokosuka, Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama. That same year, MoMA dedicated a milestone exhibition New Japanese Photography to their work; but it was the 1986 book The Solitude of Ravens that was to make Fukase a revered photographer worldwide. After a fall in 1992, Fukase went into a coma at the age of 58 and was kept on life support until his death in 2012.

R.J. Kern: The Unchosen Ones

Self-Representation in an Expanded Field
Defined as a self-image made with a hand-held mobile device and shared via social media platforms, the selfie has facilitated self-imaging becoming a ubiquitous part of globally networked contemporary life. Beyond this selfies have facilitated a diversity of image making practices and enabled otherwise representationally marginalized constituencies to insert self-representations into visual culture. In the Western European and North American art-historical context, self-portraiture has been somewhat rigidly albeit obliquely defined, and selfies have facilitated a shift regarding who literally holds the power to self-image. Like self-portraits, not all selfies are inherently aesthetically or conceptually rigorous or avant-guard. But, -as this project aims to do address via a variety of interdisciplinary approaches- selfies have irreversibly impacted visual culture, contemporary art, and portraiture in particular. Selfies propose new modes of self-imaging, forward emerging aesthetics and challenge established methods, they prove that as scholars and image-makers it is necessary to adapt and innovate in order to contend with the most current form of self-representation to date. The essays gathered herein will reveal that in our current moment it is necessary and advantageous to consider the merits and interventions of selfies and self-portraiture in an expanded field of self-representations. We invite authors to take interdisciplinary global perspectives, to investigate various sub-genres, aesthetic practices, and lineages in which selfies intervene to enrich the discourse on self-representation in the expanded field today.

The Land Knows (me)
This 160 page book includes over 100 color photos. It describes the process and outcomes of the author's efforts to restore 250 acres of his land that rests along one mile of shoreline of a National Wild and Scenic River in northwest Wisconsin into an abundantly biodiverse mosaic of prairie (pine barrens), oak and pine savannas, wetlands (including interconnected spring-fed ponds with five small islands, two cold water streams, and a mature mixed hardwood forest, as well as the flood plains of the streams and rivers). With the help of staff from the National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Soil Conservation Service, WI Department of National Resources, and restoration ecologists from several universities, the author has been able to increase an endangered wood turtle population, translocate the rare Franklin ground squirrel, increase the number of native forb and grass species, as well as create excellent habitat that has invited wolf and merlin, and many other animal species, back into the area. The book is composed into four primary sections - Scenes offer descriptions and photographs of various habitats and wildlife; Songs express prosaic perspectives from at least one animal and plant species at each habitat; Stories relate the various projects the author has engaged, relevant traditional stories from the author's various ancestral tribal cultures that concern traditional relationships with native animals and plants; and closes with the Sacred, an exploration of the spiritual as voiced in Biblical scripture and on-the-ground real experience of such. Essentially, the author integrates objective science-verified approaches with the Native American (Iroquoian, Algonquian, Siouan) horticultural, foraging, hunting and fishing heritages of his ancestors to model a cohesive approach to sustainable, shared, subsistence patterns of living with the land, its waters and wildlife, that actually increases abundance and biodiversity rather than diminishes it. The narrative focuses upon a coherent and comprehensive approach to preservation, restoration, conservation and consecration of our relationship with the land, its waters and co-resident wildlife.

Genesis P-Orridge
Temporarily Eternal is an emotional-visual summing up of a creative friendship between Swedish author Carl Abrahamsson and British artist Genesis P-Orridge (1950-2020) that lasted for more than three decades, and which was filled with musical projects, films, books, writings, conversations, travel, and a great deal of magic. This book both is and is not a companion to Genesis Breyer P-Orridge: Sacred Intent - Conversations with Carl Abrahamsson 1986-2019. It is, in the sense that the present book also focuses on shared moments during the same period of time. It is not, in the sense that it's not an intellectual trip into concepts and thoughts expressed via language, in conversation. Instead, this book contains photographic portraits: some are staged, considered, thought through, and some are pure snapshots of auspicious and fleeting moments. And some are definitely somewhere in between: juggling immediate form with desired content. Trapart Books 2021, paperback, 8,5 x 8,5", 182 pages, with approximately 150 photographs, and an essay by Carl Abrahamsson.
Sixty Years in Sixty Minutes
This is a portfolio of a mixed bag of events, and objects that have caught my eye and been recorded as of interest to me. Ilford's old slogan "For Faces and Places," was very apt. It could take just sixty minutes to look through the book or you may want to look through sixty times who knows? It spans a sixty-year period of life which has passed by my lens. I have selected the most memorable ones, which are likely to mean more to viewers beyond the family circle so to speak. Photography can be so, so personal I have found. Many of these images can never be repeated. Some will stand the test of time better than others. I would like to think that British Amateur Photojournalism never dies and ordinary people such as myself can and will make the effort to continue recording for posterity. In black and white please, it has for me and many enthusiasts alike, an archaic charm that no other art form can beat.

A Better Life for Their Children
A Sarah Mills Hodge Fund publication Born to Jewish immigrants, Julius Rosenwald rose to lead Sears, Roebuck & Company and turn it into the world's largest retailer. Born into slavery, Booker T. Washington became the founding principal of Tuskegee Institute. In 1912 the two men launched an ambitious program to partner with black communities across the segregated South to build public schools for African American children. This watershed moment in the history of philanthropy--one of the earliest collaborations between Jews and African Americans--drove dramatic improvement in African American educational attainment and fostered the generation who became the leaders and foot soldiers of the civil rights movement. Of the original 4,978 Rosenwald schools built between 1917 and 1937 across fifteen southern and border states, only about 500 survive. While some have been repurposed and a handful remain active schools, many remain unrestored and at risk of collapse. To tell this story visually, Andrew Feiler drove more than twenty-five thousand miles, photographed 105 schools, and interviewed dozens of former students, teachers, preservationists, and community leaders in all fifteen of the program states. A Better Life for their Children includes eighty-five duotone images that capture interiors and exteriors, schools restored and yet-to-be restored, and portraits of people with unique, compelling connections to these schools. Brief narratives written by Feiler accompany each photograph, telling the stories of Rosenwald schools' connections to the Trail of Tears, the Great Migration, the Tuskegee Airmen, Brown v. Board of Education, embezzlement, murder, and more. Beyond the photographic documentation, A Better Life for Their Children includes essays from three prominent voices. Constantinople: Eye of the World is a meditation in photographs on the greatest city of the ancient and medieval worlds. In the 11th century, when the population of Rome was 30,000, Constantinople and its suburbs were home to perhaps a million people. It was the only major city of the ancient world to survive intact to the end of the Middle Ages, preserving the intellectual heritage of Greece and Rome. Susan Williams recovers the literary and cultural significance of early photography in an important rereading of American fiction in the decades preceding the Civil War. The rise of photography occurred simultaneously with the rapid expansion of magazine publication in America, and Williams analyzes the particular role that periodicals such as Godey's Lady's Book, Burton's Gentleman's Magazine, and Atkinson's Casket played in defining how photography was received. At the center of the book are readings of a stunning array of fiction by forgotten and canonical writers alike, including Edgar Allan Poe, Louisa May Alcott, and Sarah Hale, as well as extended interpretations of Nathaniel Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables and The Marble Faun and Herman Melville's Pierre. In a concluding section, Williams offers a view of the fictional portrait in the later nineteenth century, when the proliferation of illustrated books once again transformed the relation between word and image in American culture.
