Psychical Realism
Victor Burgin counts among the most versatile figures within art and visual culture since the late 1960s. His artwork both connects with and reacts to minimalism, conceptual art, staged photography, appropriation art, video art and, more recently, computer-based imaging. As a scholar his thinking is informed by phenomenology, semiotics, poststructuralism, feminist theory, and psychoanalysis. This monograph provides a comprehensive and unique overview of Victor Burgin's body of work over the past five decades. Identifying the concept of 'psychical realism' as an overarching umbrella term, Alexander Streitberger traces back the artist's parallel unfolding of practice and theory, while situating this process within various historical contexts and critical debates. Five chapters link insightful case studies to key issues such as conceptual art and situational aesthetics, the relationship between representation and politics, postmodernist concepts of space, and the digital environment of media images. The book is richly illustrated and includes a sequence from the major work Dear Urania especially designed by the artist for this book.
A Gust of Photo-Philia
Photography was long regarded as a "middlebrow" art by the art institution. Yet, at the turn of the millennium it became the hot, global art of our time. In this book--part institutional history, part account of shifting photographic theories and practices--Alexandra Moschovi tells the story of photography's accommodation in and as contemporary art in the art museum. Archival research of key exhibitions and the contrasting collecting policies of MoMA, Tate, the Guggenheim, the V&A, and the Centre Pompidou offer new insights into how art as photography and photography as art have been collected and exhibited since the 1930s. Moschovi argues that this accommodation not only changed photography's status in art, culture, and society, but also played a significant role in the rebranding of the art museum as a cultural and social site.

Sergeant Dave Van Norman served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from 1947 to 1964. His 17-year RCMP career was defined by his love of Canada's north and his respect for the Inuit he met and worked with during his service. Sergeant Van Norman's career was cut short when it was discovered that he was gay, and he was forced to resign in 1964, as part of what is now known as the LGBT Purge. Fifty-five years later, his niece pays tribute to him by publishing a photo journal he made during his time as a young police officer in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. Proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated towards community projects in the Qikiqtaaluk region to be determined by the Inuit who live there. Available in English and Inuktitut.
Photography and Cultural Heritage in the Age of Nationalisms
The second half of the 19th century was a time of extensive political upheaval in central east Europe that saw the negotiation of conflicting territorial claims in the region by the Russian, Austrian and Prussian empires. The post-WW1 settlement gave rise to the formation of the independent nation states of Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Latvia and Belarus. Less well know is that this same period was also an era of keen photographic activity. During this time of empire-, state- and nation-building, cultural heritage was a potent vehicle and a provider of collective memory and identity. This innovative account analyses the relationship between politics, history, cultural heritage and photography in central east Europe between 1859 and 1945. To understand the work photographs 'do' in the construction of cultural heritage, the author analyses a wide range of little-known photographic archives created by contemporary professional and amateur photographers. Their work was extensively exploited in contemporary debates, appearing in albums, books, journals, exhibitions, museum exhibits, postcards and newspapers aimed at both scientific and popular and national and international publics. An extensive analysis of how photographic practices and outcomes were applied, borrowed, copied, appropriated and transmitted shows how photography was used to exert or subvert power, on the one hand, and as a tool in constructing and negotiating group identities on the other. By weaving photography and its patterns of making, dissemination and archival survival through major historical narratives, this volume reveals the centrality of photography and visual discourse at pivotal moments of modern history.

50 Gems of South Yorkshire
The county of South Yorkshire covers Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield districts. Although each are major urban centres with their own range of civic buildings, museums and galleries, the county also ranges from low-lying farmlands in the east to high moorlands on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It has a rich and diverse landscape including ancient woodlands, rivers and wetlands alongside the legacy of its history as an industrial powerhouse built on coal, steel and heavy engineering, including Kelham Island in Sheffield, Wortley Top Forge and Silkstone Tramway in Barnsley, and Clifton Museum in Rotherham. Away from the urban centres there are picturesque market towns and villages, such as Penistone, Tickhill, Bawtry, Bradfield, Thorpe Salvin and Tankersley which still serve rural farming communities, and stunning stately homes and parkland, for example at Wentworth Woodhouse, Canon Hall and Brodsworth Hall. Earlier medieval remains survive at Roche Abbey and Monk Bretton Priory, the castle keep at Conisbrough, the Lady Chapel on the bridge in central Rotherham and Ecclesfield Church, 'the Minster of the Moors'. There are also examples of the earliest human settlement and activity at Wharncliffe Crags and Wincobank Hill in Sheffield. Other places have associations with historical figures such as the sculptor Francis Chantrey and William Bradford, one of the Pilgrim Fathers. In 50 Gems of South Yorkshire authors Christine Handley and Ian Rotherham explore the many places and their history that make this part of northern England so special, including many lesser known gems.
History and Modern Media
In History and Modern Media, John Mraz largely focuses on Mexican photography and his innovative methodology that examines historical photographs by employing the concepts of genre and function. He developed this method in extensive work on photojournalism; it is tested here through examining two genres: Indianist imagery as an expression of imperial, neo-colonizing, and decolonizing photography, and progressive photography as embodied in worker and laborist imagery, as well as feminist and decolonizing visuality. The book interweaves an autobiographical narrative with concrete research. Mraz describes the resistance he encountered in US academia to this new way of showing and describing the past in films and photographs, as well as some illuminating experiences as a visiting professor at several US universities. More importantly, he reflects on what it has meant to move to Mexico and become a Mexican. Mexico is home to a thriving school of photohistorians perhaps unequaled in the world. Some were trained in art history, and a few continue to pursue that discipline. However, the great majority work from the discipline known as "photohistory" which focuses on vernacular photographs made outside of artistic intentions. A central premise of the book is that knowing the cultures of the past and of the other is crucial in societies dominated by short-term and parochial thinking, and that today's hyper-audiovisuality requires historians to use modern media to offer their knowledge as alternatives to the "perpetual present" in which we live.

All This Change Is Making Me Wet
On May 31, 2020 while the world was locked down by the Covid-19 pandemic, protesters across the United States took to the streets. The recent death of George Floyd, a black man, while white police officers restrained and allegedly suffocated him, silencing his final plea "I can't breathe, " ignited the nation, and demonstrators in New York City, and across the country, united to demand one message be heard. Black Lives Matter. While initial demonstrations of massive crowds across the city were peaceful, late that night some protesters clashed with police setting off riots and looting in SoHo, the iconic neighborhood and arts district, and home to premiere luxury brands like Chanel and Louis Vouitton. After a night of chaos and destruction business owners and tenants boarded up storefronts and windows as they braced for another day and night of protests that ultimately led to a week of strictly enforced city wide curfew and lockdown. The messages, artwork, statements and questions that were lost when the barriers and barricades were finally removed and the experience of roaming the once bustling and thriving streets of SoHo turned pre-apocalyptic sterile war zone of that tense and uncertain week in early summer 2020, rest in the images of All This Change Is Making Me Wet, and they leave us to re-visit and re-examine what has past, where we've come, and where we go from here.
O. N. Pruitt's Possum Town
Photographer O. N. Pruitt (1891-1967) was for some forty years the de facto documentarian of Lowndes County, Mississippi, and its county seat, Columbus -- known to locals as "Possum Town." His body of work recalls many FSA photographers, but Pruitt was not an outsider with an agenda; he was a community member with intimate knowledge of the town and its residents. He photographed his fellow white citizens and Black ones as well, in circumstances ranging from the mundane to the horrific: family picnics, parades, river baptisms, carnivals, fires, funerals, two of Mississippi's last public and legal executions by hanging, and a lynching. From formal portraits to candid images of events in the moment, Pruitt's documentary of a specific yet representative southern town offers viewers today an invitation to meditate on the interrelations of photography, community, race, and historical memory.Columbus native Berkley Hudson was photographed by Pruitt, and for more than three decades he has considered and curated Pruitt's expansive archive, both as a scholar of media and visual journalism and as a community member. This stunning book presents Pruitt's photography as never before, combining more than 190 images with a biographical introduction and Hudson's short essays and reflective captions on subjects such as religion, ethnic identity, the ordinary graces of everyday life, and the exercise of brutal power.

Wright Brothers
Renowned Dayton, Ohio photographer Dan Cleary blends his passion for photography with a fascination for the Wright Brothers' legacy. In his book, Wright Brothers: Then and Now, Cleary seamlessly blends historical images of the Wright Brothers with current images he has taken at the same locations. The result is a compelling visual tribute to the pioneers of flight. The Wright Brothers were accomplished photographers and used photography in their process of discovery. Cleary obtained digital photographs by and about the Wright Brothers for this project. He then traveled to Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan, New York, and France to capture current-day photographs at locations where the Wright Brothers made their early test experiments and flight demonstrations. Using his artistry as a photographer and his mastery of Photoshop, he superimposes the old and new images into captivating new combinations where the past and present interweave. He also includes a written narrative in each picture about the people behind the history, helping to bring life to each photograph. The image in the book "Bishop's First Flight" references the day in May 1910 when Bishop Milton Wright, the Wright Brothers' father, flew for the first time. He and Orville traveled to a height of about 350 feet and flew for six minutes over Huffman Prairie in Dayton, Ohio. The Bishop is said to have exclaimed, "Higher, Orville, Higher!" The Huffman Prairie Flying Field National Historical Park is adjacent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. While at Huffman Prairie taking photographs with this historical image in mind, a C-17 Globemaster III transport took off from the Air Force Base and flew into Cleary's camera's frame. Cleary states, "The C-17 and Orville and Bishop Wright's plane lined up perfectly! It seemed to me that "Higher, Orville, Higher" was an appropriate metaphor for where aviation was soon to be." About the image titled "Kite Flying," Cleary recounts, "While at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, Park Rangers started to pass out kites to visitors. It was the perfect opportunity to photograph, especially knowing the Wright Brothers used kites in their testing. Later in PhotoShop, I playfully inserted Orville and Wilbur with their kite into the scene." This photograph of Cleary's is one of the more playful images in the book. Wright Brothers: Then and Now is a must-have book for the Wright Brother history buff. This book is available from Dan's website, www.ClearyFineArtPhoto.com, and at many aviation and history museum bookstores.

The Case for Spirit Photography
"Doyle's modesty of language conceals a profound tolerance of the human complexity"-John Le Carr矇 "Every Writer owes something to Holmes." -T.S. EliotWhile the controversy of Psychic Photography was gripping the early 20th Century United Kingdom, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle set out to investigate the most notable cases. In The Case for Spirit Photography, he aimed to defend the validity of capturing images of spirits with a camera. The spectacle of spirit photography had become popular in the late 19th Century, but by the 1920's The Crewe Circle, an infamous English spiritualist group had become the center of a national controversy attacking spirit photography as a hoax.Doyle, a leader of the Spiritualist movement, wrote this investigation in defense of the group, and conjointly looks at other cases of supernatural incidences. As we face current public figures dismissive of empirical scientific evidence, this is a fascinating look at the intrigue of conviction. As the writer of one of fictions most colorful and abiding detectives, Doyle's deductions in The Case for Spirit Photography are enthralling. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Case is both modern and readable. Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. Each and every Mint Edition title gets a fresh, professionally typeset manuscript and a dazzling new cover, all while maintaining the integrity of the original book. Faces of Courage
As America begins dialing back the Trump-era restrictions that all but eliminated asylum for immigrants fleeing violence and seeking protection in the U.S., this volume of fifty powerful images, with captions in English and Spanish, documents the interfaith grassroots movement that never gave up on the Statue of Liberty's poetic pledge to welcome the world's "huddled masses, yearning to breathe free."Faces of Courage: Ten years of Building Sanctuary chronicles the first ten years of the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, a coalition of twenty-eight congregations, which builds community across religious, ethnic, and class lines to end injustices against all immigrants, documented or otherwise. The book follows New Sanctuary supporters as they demand policy changes with sit-ins at City Hall, consciousness-raising marches, and protests outside the Philadelphia field office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It goes behind the scenes into the churches where families facing deportation took refuge. It provides a visual record of New Sanctuary's campaign for driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants, and its "accompaniment" program to support immigrants at their court hearings.A Foreword by former Philadelphia Inquirer immigration writer Michael Matza and Afterword by Honduran-born, West Kensington Ministry Pastor Adan Mairena provide historical context in English and Spanish.Harvey Finkle, widely recognized as a Philadelphia treasure, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy & Practice. His photography, which has documented immigration to the city since the 1970s, has been hailed as "visual anthropology." His archives are a graphic record of the successive waves of settlement, mostly in South Philadelphia, by European Jews, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Burmese, Mexicans, Central Americans and other immigrants and refugees.Working and Writing for Change SeriesEdited by Steve Parks and Jessica Pauszek

Developing Mission
In Developing Mission, Joseph W. Ho offers a transnational cultural history of US and Chinese communities framed by missionary lenses through time and space--tracing the lives and afterlives of images, cameras, and visual imaginations from before the Second Sino-Japanese War through the first years of the People's Republic of China. When American Protestant and Catholic missionaries entered interwar China, they did so with cameras in hand. Missions principally aimed at the conversion of souls and the modernization of East Asia, became, by virtue of the still and moving images recorded, quasi-anthropological ventures that shaped popular understandings of and formal foreign policy toward China. Portable photographic technologies changed the very nature of missionary experience, while images that missionaries circulated between China and the United States affected cross-cultural encounters in times of peace and war. Ho illuminates the centrality of visual practices in the American missionary enterprise in modern China, even as intersecting modernities and changing Sino-US relations radically transformed lives behind and in front of those lenses. In doing so, Developing Mission reconstructs the almost-lost histories of transnational image makers, subjects, and viewers across twentieth-century China and the United States.

Oltre
Fairy Tales is an erotic folklore of short stories shot by Petra Collins starring Alexa Demie. The pair created the concept and text collaboratively. Alexa portrays nine characters that embody new stories they would have liked to see. As children, Petra and Alexa were both enamored with fairy tales, which provided an escape from their own painful realities. Each of the nine tales are set in unique spaces, ranging from suburban homes and parking lots to fantastical sets. Petra and Alexa's chapters of elves, mermaids, sirens, water sprites, fallen angels, fairies, witches, and banshees blend their own stories with retold fairy tales. The photos combine elements of camp, prosthetics, and shibari in a surreal update to the imagery of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, Charles Perrault, and others.
Nomadic Life in Mongolia
When you hear of a photo book on "Mongolian Nomads," you may imagine a book featuring images of people living on the steppe and handling livestock. But instead, this book focuses on the relationships between nomadic people and their belongings. What kinds of objects exist in their living world? How do nomadic people recognize and treat those objects? This book describes the daily lives of Mongolian nomads through their material culture, a topic which has not seen much attention until now. Using data collected through cultural anthropology fieldwork, this book features photos of one nomadic family and their belongings alongside narratives told by the various family members about those belongings. These narratives introduce the family history. Through the story of the Enkhbat family and their belongings, the reader will become immersed in the story of nomadic life in modern Mongolia. By the author.
Eye to Eye
The women in these portraits were some of the first dykes I ever laid eyes on, and the book feels like a lost family album. -Alison Bechdel In 1979, JEB self-published her first book, Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians. In a work that was revolutionary for its era, JEB made photographs of lesbians from different ages and backgrounds in their everyday lives--working, playing, raising families, and striving to remake their worlds. The photographs were accompanied by writings from acclaimed authors including Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, Joan Nestle, and others. Various women pictured in the book also shared their personal stories. Eye to Eye signaled a radical new way of seeing--moving lesbian lives from the margins to the center, and reversing a history of invisibility. More than just a book, it was an affirmation of the existence of lesbians that helped to propel a political movement. Reprinted for the first time in forty years, Eye to Eye is a faithful reproduction of a work that still resonates today. This edition features additional essays from artist and writer Tee Corinne, former World Cup soccer player Lori Lindsey, and photographer Lola Flash.

"I get totally out of myself. It's the closest I come to not existing, I think, which is the best - which to me is attractive."1, konstatiert er.

Philip Montgomery: American Mirror
"Montgomery's photographs capture the reality of Americans in crisis, in all our flawed, tragic, ridiculous glory." --Patrick Radden Keefe, author of Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty American Mirror is award-winning photographer Philip Montgomery's dramatic chronicle of the United States at a time of profound change. Through his intimate and powerful reporting and a signature black-and-white style, Montgomery reveals the fault lines in American society, from police violence and the opioid addiction crisis to the COVID-19 pandemic and the demonstrations in support of Black lives. Yet in his unflinching images, we also see moments of grace and sacrifice, glimmers of solidarity and tireless advocates for democracy. Like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans before him, Montgomery has made an unforgettable testament of a nation at a crossroads.
