Secret Lincoln
Lincoln has played an important role in history since its time as a Roman settlement. Subsequently taken over by the Vikings and then the Danes, it became a major trading centre in the East of England and, following the Norman Conquest, the Normans recognised its importance and built their castle there and their cathedral. Today both still stand, although the cathedral was substantially rebuilt after an earthquake in the 12th century. Although Lincoln went into a decline after the Middle Ages, it was fought over by Parliamentary and Royalist forces in the Civil War and the coming of industrialisation saw its fortunes rise again. Many large engineering companies were based in Lincoln and although their presence today is smaller, the city continues to grow. In this book Daniel J. Codd explores the history of Lincoln through the story of its buildings, people and events through the ages. Readers will discover many little known episodes in this history of the town, both the Uphill area which is home to the Castle and Cathedral and the Downhill area by the River Witham. Orlando Greenwood Illustrates the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
A full member of the Royal Society of British Artists, Orlando Greenwood (1892-1989) was a brilliant and talented artist. But until now there was no indication that he had ever illustrated verses of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. An unexpected discovery of pictures in a box of his work, purchased at an auction by Jo Briony brought this work to light. The black and white images were done when he was a 21- to 22-year-old student at Goldsmiths' College of Art. Greenwood appears to have felt a close relationship with the poetry because he used his face to represent Omar Khayyam in one picture. For the first time Orlando Greenwood's Rubaiyat imagery is presented in book form. The 6"x9", softcover book features nine of his illustrations plus a frontispiece image. It also explains the serendipitous discovery of these pictures and sheds some insight into Greenwood's life and the selection of quatrains he illustrated.

Physician Avocations
Early in the tenure of Dr. William C. Roberts as editor in chief of Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings, he became aware of physicians' many creative talents-often through the interviews he conducted and published. He invited some to contribute their pieces to the journal. We called this feature "Avocations." For the first decade, only a dozen or so Avocations were published. Later, more physicians began to participate, and most issues featured at least one Avocation contribution. Although paintings and poems have been featured, most Avocations are photographs-ranging from microphotography to nature and animal photos to pictures of historic places. Because the photo quality did not meet the author's desires, she tirelessly worked to enhance the photos and re-issue an "enhanced" version. Backpacking through Southeast Asia has a special place in my heart since it was my first big trip away from home. Seven weeks in paradise. This photography book exemplifies my travels through the streets of Bangkok, relaxing vide of Pi, the amazing architecture in Chiang Mai and then the islands! We explored the sunny beaches of Ko Pha-ngan, famous for their "Full Moon" parties. I was fortunate to complete my PADI scuba diving certification in Ko Tao in Shark Bay and Turtle Island. Making the Traditional Wet Plate Camera
I made wet plate cameras for quite some time, shipping my handmade cameras all over the world. It takes you through all the basic stages of the base, standards, bellows, plate holder, inserts, etc; and also touches upon other aspects such as folding tailboard, rise/fall, tilt, and swing. 3D diagrams and color photos help you to visualize the process.--The book follows along with the build of a 5"x7" camera. Also included are the critical measurements for cameras from half plate up to 8x10.--I aim this book to the experienced woodworker who is familiar with some traditional joinery. Some of the joinery such as the hand-cut dovetails may be substituted with box joints or finger joints. Mitered spline joints may be used in place of the mortise & tenon joints used in the books. Though aimed at the experienced woodcrafter, I feel that those with limited experience may be able modify the methods and techniques to fit their needs.--Measurements are listed in mm at the bottom of each page and the diagrams are repeated in mm in the rear of the book.
Unseen Simla
It is truly said that hobbies play an important role in developing one's personality as they enable one to make certain inventions in various fields. The same thing occurred with the author who took an earnest interest in the historical data collected by historians. Thus, his inclination towards history from his childhood persuaded him to go to the depth of Shimla, which was the summer capital of Britishers and then converted to a concrete jungle with the increasing population which adversely affects the natural beauty of this hill station, as forest cover and natural water springs vanished forever due to deforestation. Consequently, the author decided to depict the picture of ancient Shimla which was surrounded with dense forests of deodar and pine trees and limited population of inhabitants. Thus, in order to achieve his goal, he put in efforts to collect old pictures and photographs of the hill town which is the venue of international agreements and still called 'the queen of hills'.He was even inspired by his family mainly his father who was a voluntary environmentalist. His father's plan for development of forest which was employment generating and same was acknowledged by PMO (Lt.Rajiv Gandhi) vide letter number 250/51/C/8/87 ES-2 dated 14-12-1987. It was the first plan in which emphasis were given to watch the rate of survival of plants to ascertain that efforts put in by Govt. for afforestation yielded fruitful results or not.
