A Healing Eye
"We are living through a very grim time," writes Barry Sheinkopf, "with death lurking invisibly all around us, livelihoods shaken or destroyed, emotions running wild in all directions, governments struggling with varying degrees of integrity and success to contain the mayhem, and our very nature as social creatures held in cautious check. We're calling the microscopic organism that has attacked us Coronavirus and the disease it causes Covid-19, but it's a plague plain and simple: novel, horrifying, highly contagious, perhaps recurring. Our future has become uncertain, a mystery. That's why I have subtitled this collection Images and Words in a Time of Plague. I've been using cameras for a long time, living with the astonishment of the world around me and trying to capture, not just the facts of what I see, but that very astonishment. I offer some of those images here--like candles set adrift in a river on paper plates--wedded to insights they have called to mind that poets and writers have left us over many centuries. I offer the book in the hope that it sustains you as these images have sustained me with the faith that the joy of living will endure for us all--that, as Kafka once put it, 'They threw us out of Paradise, but Paradise was not destroyed.'"
see me hide
In 'see me hide' Caroline Burrows seeks to illustrate her ongoing exploration of the adverse effects of complex childhood trauma on her adult relationships and interactions. This series of self portraits, in which she is often naked, sometimes blurred, occasionally bleeding, but always hiding, documents the painful experience of hiding who she is whilst imploring the viewer to really see her, and asks: What is it like to be seen? What is it like to be heard?

Home From Home
Near Cleethorpes, Humberston Fitties chalet park has a history that can be traced back a century. Currently, over 300 chalets exist on the Fitties. The people that have homes (or 'homes from home') on the Fitties take great pride in their dwellings, their personalities shining through in the manner in which they decorate their chalets; signage is often ironic and playful, the names of the buildings toying with stereotypes and the allure of the kitsch. Humour abounds. These photographs document this space.

Jeffrey Ladd: The Awful German Language
An ex-pat's photographic homage to the dissonances of word and imageIn 2011 the American photographer and Errata Books publisher Jeffrey Ladd (born 1968) moved to Cologne, Germany, and began photographing his surroundings while learning the basics of the German language. In the process, he collected lists of interesting German vocabulary words (professions, places, things, common terms and outdated terms), which he juxtaposes with his black-and-white photographs; two different types of language--one visual, one verbal--describing a sense of his new home. Borrowing its title from Mark Twain, The Awful German Language embraces a state where the combination of word and photograph can resonate or remain dissonant and confused depending on the individual reader. An index of definitions in English at the back of the book is provided as a learning tool, but one that requires some work on the part of the learner to decipher its code.
Just Penis
Fifty. From Fifth Avenue executives to beggars and skinheads, fifty male models responded to online ads inviting to have his phallus drawn. Contrary to what many might think, sixty percent of the male models were heterosexual. After four years spanning the years 2008-2011, 116 drawings and photographs were made of a diverse collection of penises. There were several times that Fernando Carpaneda put himself at risk or, to say the least, in unusual situations in order to present this innovative experience. Fernando invites us to enter their daily lives, and more than that, to enter the bowels of what is done in secret by men in times when no one is watching. It is around this experience with a parade of unknown genitalia that comes the title of the exhibition: Just Penis. Fernando Carpaneda has spent decades expressing himself in a multitude of media. Journeying from sculpture to painting, drawing to engraving, he has shown great resourcefulness in all of them. Definitely a multifaceted artist. His sculptures, portraying gay scenes are iconic. The delicacy of his painting is recognized worldwide, especially, the incredible miniature paintings of tattoos using just a single hair. His work centers around the dichotomy between the subject's highly explicit sexuality and lyrically subtle. While his influences have unconsciously changed the artist cites: Hans Bellmer, Mimosa Pale, Tim Noble and Sue Webster.
Glints
Glints was conceived by photographer/writer/artist Kris Haggblom as a series of archival photographic chapbooks. Originally published by SpiNDec Press (now the design division of Poetic Justice Books) over a period of three years, 2016-2018, the chapbooks were individually printed to archival museum standards and hand bound. Each book was ten pages, actually eight pages with a fly-out, of heavy paper printed in stunning quadtones, hand stitched in a Caslon cover. Each book was numbered and signed. Only five of the six books in this collection were released and all in extremely limited editions - the highest print run was for Dragonflies - sixteen copies printed. The final title in the series - Solidago Wars - was being adapted from a unique artist book self-published by Haggblom in 2014, but was never completed. The version presented here is cobbled together from files and notes left by the artist. While the printing process used for this collection does an admirable job of presenting Haggblom's work, the original hand bound, archival chapbooks are individual works of art. As such, they have been snatched up by collectors and are now rarely available - copy number 6 of Mangroves recently sold at auction for $250, more than twelve times the original subscription price. Poetic Justice Books is proud to be able to bring these beautiful works to a wider audience.
Expanding Universe. the Hubble Space Telescope
With investigations into everything from black holes to exoplanets, the Hubble Telescope has changed not only the face of astronomy but also our very sense of being in the universe. On the 30th anniversary of its launch into low-earth orbit, this updated edition of Expanding Universe presents 30 brand new images, unveiling more hidden gems from the Hubble's archives. Ultra-high resolution and taken with almost no background light, these pictures have answered some of the most compelling questions of time and space while also revealing new mysteries, like the strange "dark energy" that sees the universe expanding at an ever-accelerating rate. The collection is accompanied by an essay from photography critic Owen Edwards and an interview with Zoltan Levay, who explains how the pictures are composed. Veteran Hubble astronauts Charles F. Bolden, Jr. and John Mace Grunsfeld also offer their insights on Hubble's legacy and future space exploration.

Finding Peace in a Restless WorldSpring Book 2020
Finding Peace in a Restless World was conceived to honor the three decades legacy of the PhotoCentral Spring Exhibition. Each year over 50 artists shared their creations, made an exhibition, and gathered to celebrate creativity and community. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit our community and public assemblies became dangerous to our health and survival, the Spring Exhibition was abruptly canceled by the shelter-in-place order. In response, we felt the need to keep creativity alive, believing that some good can blossom out of sorrow and limitations. We created this Spring Book to continue our community in a new way by creating a lasting legacy - a book - to honor our art spirits. Spring Book features 90 artists celebrating creativity in challenging times. Includes poetry by Marcela Griffin, Kate Jordahl, Bruce Roberts, and Sim Warkov and is edited and designed by Geir and Kate Jordahl.

kumbh
Every twelve years, a new city appears from the sand in the barren ghats of Triveni Sangam at Prayag near Allahabad, India. At this time leaders of many religious beliefs make this city their home, and with them gather their followers, thousands of naked ascetics, millions of devout Hindus, ordinary men of faith who come here to wash their sins by taking a dip in the confluence of three holy rivers, and swarms of international and national media who are here to just witness this spectacle, this carnival of faith, this the largest gathering of humanity in the world. The Maha Kumbh Mela that fell in January-February 2013 was the most auspicious in 144 years. Hence, the city of Allahabad welcomed over 100 million people to temporary shelters over 56 days of the festival on the banks of the Sangam -- the amalgamation of three of the holiest rivers in Hindu mythology, the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. The night the fair began, I, with my parents, traveled from Delhi to experience different moods of the Kumbh Mela and also to capture this unprecedented influx of people. The morning of the very first day of the festival, I saw glory, human diversity, a parade of Nagasadhus with whips, pitchforks and flails, walking barefoot and chanting slogans, the play of extremism, and lots of politics, too.

Nomadic Life in Mongolia ― Stories of the Enkhbat Family and Their Belongings
Whenever a photo book mentions "the Mongol Nomad", you may suppose it would be a book showing the peoples who are living in a steppe with livestock. Instead, this book focuses on the relationship between nomadic people and their belongings. What kind of things exist in their living world? How nomadic peoples recognize and treat those things? This book describes the daily lives of Mongol nomads through their material culture which has not been basked in the limelight so far.Using data collected through cultural anthropology fieldwork, this book shows photos of a nomadic family and their belongings, as well as narratives told by the family members concerning those belongings. These narratives introduce the family history. Through the story of the Enkhbat family and their belongings, you will be familiar with the nomadic life in modern Mongolia.

Wild Horses of Cumberland Island
"... an amazing photographer." -- Professional Photographer Magazine A longtime favorite getaway for America's most influential families, Cumberland Island, off the Atlantic coast of Georgia, offers breathtaking white-sand beaches, rolling dunes, old-growth oak forests, and salt marsh tidal estuaries. At the center of it all is a population of horses that has thrived, untouched for generations, within this serene sanctuary. In Wild Horses of Cumberland Island, photographer Anouk Masson Krantz has captured the dramatic scenery and majestic horses as they have never been seen before. Her images show the remarkable animals in their naturally diverse ecosystems. A lone horse on a distant beach; four creatures peacefully grazing; a shy animal peering over its shoulder from a brushy thicket - Krantz's portfolio, built over the last decade, is an intimate reflection not only of Cumberland Island's exceptional beauty and spirited horses, but of the history and the safekeeping that have allowed both to flourish. This second edition includes many new images and showcases Krantz's expansive body of work that reflects the remarkable majesty of these horses as they continue to roam across this remote island landscape.
The Instant and Its Shadow
A compelling and innovative reflection on the way photography captures and condenses time Two photographs, connected by a ladder, separated by a century. First, William Henry Fox Talbot photographed a faithfully realistic image of a ladder against a haystack in the English countryside. One hundred years later, an anonymous photographer captured another ladder, "photographed" alongside an incinerated man by the blinding light of the atomic bomb. These two images underpin a poetic and theoretical reflection on the origins of photographic technique, the imaginative power of montage, and the relation of photography to time itself in Jean-Christophe Bailly's The Instant and Its Shadow, translated into English for the very first time. A rare find of intellectual caliber and theoretical rigor, The Instant and Its Shadow pursues a unique and powerful reflection on the first hundred years of photography's history and on the essence of the photographic art in general. Inspired by the unexpected coming together of these two iconic images, the book begins by retracing Talbot's invention of the photographic calotype in the early nineteenthcentury, highlighting the paradox that saw Talbot wishing to imitate the representative arts of painting and drawing while simultaneously liberating the image from any imitative paradigm. This analysis leads Bailly to elucidate photography's relation to material and visual reality. A meditation on photography's seeming ability to stop time follows, concluding with the photographs of Hiroshima and the photographic nature of the atomic bomb. Building on an inspired juxtaposition of The Haystack with the Hiroshima photographs, the book becomes a testament to the potency of photomontage, arguing that "the more singular an image, the greater its connective power." Bailly's book is at once a lyrical homage to some of the founding texts of photographic theory and a startling reminder of the uncanny power of photography itself. Part theoretical reflection, part lyrical reverie, The Instant and Its Shadow is packed with profound and stellar insights about the medium.
