More Ancients of Assisi (Book II)
Assisi was the home of several saints, including Agnes of Assisi, Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, Rufinus of Assisi, Vitalis of Assisi, Sylvester of Assisi, and St. Francis himself. The pink stones used to build many of the Franciscan buildings were quarried from Monte Subasio, the mountain on which the city was built.Since the residents of Assisi have continued to hold onto their traditional lifestyles, the town offers so much more. High atop a slope overlooking Assisi is the imposing Rocca Maggiore, an imperial fortress reconstructed by Cardinal Albornoz and expanded by Popes Pius II and Paul III.Hidden beneath the streets is the Roman Domus of Propertius with its frescoed walls. Archaeologists have also preserved the Domus of Lararium, which sports a marble floor mosaic and a covered port with Pompeian decorations.Today Italy in general and Umbria in particular are striking places for tourism with unique architecture, a mild climate, and Mediterranean culture. Visitors to Italy can expand their knowledge base with an artist's view of Assisi, Monte Subasio, and nearby villages. The color photographs in Ancients of Assisi I and Ancients of Assisi II were taken at the Basilica di San Francesco, including the Basilica inferior and the Basilica superior; the Sacro Convento, a Franciscan friary; the Rocca Maggiore, a castle that is 800 years old; Santa Maria Maggiore; the Basilica of Santa Chiara, or Saint Clare; and the Roman Domus of Propertius and the Domus of Lararium, both of which are underground. Page through these books to travel through thousands of years of history.Prepare yourself for Umbria's monasteries, cathedrals, ancient stone architecture, winding streets, and lively community nightlight with the color photos in Ancients of Assisi I and Ancients of Assisi II. The softcover edition uses a single-page layout for an affordable price point. The hardcover edition utilizes a beautiful two-page spread with the photo on the righthand page and the title on the left. Either version makes a great gift.In the Travel Photo Art series, traditional tourism panoramas mix with arthouse aesthetics. These slim, intense productions are your passport to new perspectives on famous places. Peer around corners and discover a unique way to interact with monuments and memorials you thought you knew. This popular series includes titles that mix text with the pictures. Books like Notre Dame Cathedral: Our Lady of Paris, featuring photos taken months before the 2019 fire, become keepsakes associated with a specific site. Titles like Lidice Lives and Terezin and Theresienstadt are deeply meaningful for families touched by the Holocaust.Laine Cunningham, a three-time recipient of The Hackney Award, writes fiction that takes readers around the world. Her debut novel, The Family Made of Dust, is set in the Australian Outback, while Reparation is a novel of the American Great Plains. She is the editor of Sunspot Literary Journal.
Piscary
Piscary unravels how the design of fishing gear in turn designs our environment. The spacing of netting, seasons, sizing of containers, material, and methods are all choices that sculpt habitat and culture in the Pacific Northwest. In Piscary, art guides an observation of industry and ancestry. Local author and landscape designer, Phia Sennett, traces regional transformation through photography, archives, poetry, collage, and mapping. The book's dream-like photographs and collages match a mistaken reality of salmon and the new role of the species as a symbolic icon. Even though today's wild salmon are at five percent of historic numbers, the fishing industry continues to define the Salish Sea. Each chapter of Piscary takes place at a different elevation and explores a breadth of fishing practices encompassing wild caught, reefnet, fish farmed, hatchery, and aquaculture.
Long Story Short
The latest in a series of idiosyncratic surveys of the history of photography"Humans, unlike other living creatures, want to make and look at pictures." So begins the introduction to the jaw-dropping array of photographs in Long Story Short, the latest in Fraenkel Gallery's idiosyncratic surveys of photography since the medium's invention 180 years ago. A surprising and unconventional slice of photography's history, Long Story Short is also an abbreviated tour of Fraenkel Gallery's approach to photography. Published to mark the gallery's 40th (and still counting) year, this sumptuously designed and printed volume presents work by photography's masters alongside that of little-known artists and anonymous thrift shop finds. Among the images to be discovered here are Eadweard Muybridge's 1887 study of a contortionist performing extreme body movements; Man Ray's 1923 ghostlike rayograph of an irradiated banjo; and a female impersonator applying her lipstick backstage, as seen by Diane Arbus in 1959. Interwoven among these are anonymous photographs of a tornado touching ground near Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, in 1896; astronaut Buzz Aldrin standing beside an American flag on the moon in 1969; and a lawn mower flying inexplicably over a meadow in 1974. Presented in approximate chronological order, the unconventional flow of images conveys a profound sense of photography's infinite riches, and is a meditation on the inexhaustible possibilities of the medium itself.

Little Romances
When considered as an object the photograph exists physically in the world, it belongs to someone; it gets held, it has weight, value. I've been interested in this concept for some time. It was this interest plus the recurrent use of my images online without my permission that motivated the creation of the series Little Romances. I have always made very personal work, my current emotional state and interests get translated directly into my images. Most all these images reflect questions and anxieties about being a woman, navigating what that means; what is expected of me as a mother, daughter, wife or lover versus what I'm capable of. In sharing my work online, sometimes it is treated with respect, but more often not. Not being asked for its use, and/or not being credited; it's upsetting being treated that way especially with such personal images. In Little Romances I photograph prints of my photographs and they become a physical object; my object. I surround them with elements from my garden or other personal items not to evoke nostalgia or sentimentality but to deepen my physical connection/claim to these images and distance them from the viewer. The object-image becomes obscured, repurposed, diverted, so that its original intent remains safe from viewing and at the same time it explores a new narrative.
Sally Mann
First published by Aperture in 1988, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women is a groundbreaking classic by one of photography's most renowned artists. At Twelve is Sally Mann's illuminating, collective portrait of twelve-year-old girls, taken in the artist's native Rockbridge County, Virginia. The age of twelve brings tremendous excitement and social possibilities; it is a trying time as well, caught between childhood and adulthood, when the difference is not entirely understood. As Ann Beattie writes in her perceptive introduction maintained from the 1988 original publication, "These girls still exist in an innocent world in which a pose is only a pose--what adults make of that pose may be the issue." The consequences of this misunderstanding can be real: destitution, abuse, unwanted pregnancy. The young women in Mann's unflinching large-format photographs, however, are not victims. Within this book of portraits, many of which are accompanied by writings of the artist, they return the viewer's gaze with a disturbing equanimity. This reissue of At Twelve has been printed using new scans and separations from Mann's prints, which were taken with an 8-by-10-inch view camera, rendering them with a quality true to the original edition.

Photowork: Forty Photographers on Process and Practice
How does a photographic project or series evolve? How important are "style" and "genre"? What comes first--the photographs or a concept? PhotoWork is a collection of interviews by forty photographers about their approach to making photographs and, more importantly, a sustained body of work. Curator and lecturer Sasha Wolf was inspired to seek out and assemble responses to these questions after hearing from countless young photographers about how they often feel adrift in their own practice, wondering if they are doing it the "right" way. The responses, from both established and newly emerging photographers, reveal there is no single path. Their advice is wildly divergent, generous, and delightful: Justine Kurland discusses the importance of allowing a narrative to unravel; Doug DuBois reflects on the process of growing into one's own work; Dawoud Bey evokes musicians such as Miles Davis as his inspiration for never wanting to become "my own oldies show." The book is structured through a Proust-like questionnaire, in which individuals are each asked the same set of questions, creating a typology of responses that allows for an intriguing compare and contrast. Including Robert Adams, Dawoud Bey, Alejandro Cartagena, Elinor Carucci, John Chiara, Kelli Connell, Lois Conner, Matthew Connors, Si璽n Davey, Doug DuBois, John Edmonds, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Paul Graham, Katy Grannan, Gregory Halpern, Curran Hatleberg, Todd Hido, Rinko Kawauchi, Peter Kayafas, Justine Kurland, Gillian Laub, John Lehr, Dana Lixenberg, Andrew Moore, Abelardo Morell, Zora Murff, Catherine Opie, Ed Panar, Matthew Pillsbury, Kristine Potter, Gus Powell, Richard Renaldi, Sasha Rudensky, Lise Sarfati, Bryan Schutmaat, Manjari Sharma, Dayanita Singh, Tiffany Smith, Alec Soth, Mark Steinmetz, and Vanessa Winship
Lucy Hamidzadeh
"I never know what I'm going to capture, it's all spontaneous and that's what I love the most. I often find myself walking the streets for hours and hours taking photos. Every image I capture is the result of a little flicker that happens to catch my eye in such an overwhelming way that it becomes impossible for me to simply ignore." Lucy HamidzadehLucy Hamidzadeh is a photographer and writer from south east London with a deep affection for unpredictable weather and the hustle and bustle of city life. Her early career was spent working for the Monarch Travel Group, where she spent 20 years honing her skill as a writer and developing her penchant for travel - and photography. Unfinished Stories is an extensive collection of photographs that capture the daily lives of people: on the streets, in trains and at caf矇s, going through their day, often without much thought or notice, but captured in an indelible way by Lucy's eye and camera. Their "unfinished stories" are the inspiration for her first solo book of words and pictures, making for a lasting glimpse at the fleeting moments she encounters on the streets of London.
Evelyn Hofer: Dublin
A newly conceived edition of Evelyn Hofer's 1967 photographic portrait of DublinThe starting point for this book is Evelyn Hofer's Dublin: A Portrait, which enjoyed great popularity upon its original publication in 1967, and featured an in-depth essay by the well-known British critic and memoirist V.S. Pritchett. Dublin: A Portrait is an example of Evelyn Hofer's (1922-2009) perhaps most important body of work, namely her city portraits--books that present comprehensive prose texts by renowned authors alongside her self-contained visual essays with their own narratives. Dublin: A Portrait was the last book published in this legendary series. This newly conceived edition of Dublin focuses on the photos Hofer took on behalf of the publisher Harper & Row in 1965 and 1966. In Dublin Hofer repeatedly turned her camera to sights of the city, but mainly to the people who constituted its essence. She made numerous portraits--of writers and public figures, or unknown people in the streets. Her portraits give evidence of an intense, respectful engagement with her subjects, who participate as equal partners in the process of photographing.

Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb: Brooklyn, the City Within
Brooklyn is one of the most dynamic and ethnically diverse places on the planet. In fact, it's estimated that one in every eight US families had relatives come through Brooklyn when settling in the country. Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb have been photographing this New York City borough for the past five years, creating a profound and vibrant portrait. Alex Webb has traversed every corner of the borough, exploring its tremendous diversity. This parallels his work made in the past forty years, traveling to photograph different cultures around the world--all of which are represented in the place he now calls home. Contrasting with this approach, Rebecca Norris Webb photographed "the city within the city within the city," the green heart of Brooklyn--the Botanic Garden, Greenwood Cemetery, and Prospect Park, where Brooklynites of all walks of life cross paths as they find solace. Together, their photographs of Brooklyn tell a larger American story, one that touches on immigration, identity, and home.
Memories of Life on the Farm
John Calvin Allen, professionally known as J. C., worked as a photographer for Purdue University from 1909-1952, and operated his own photography business until his death in 1976. The J. C. Allen photographs represent a historical account of the transition from pioneer practices to scientific methodologies in agriculture and rural communities. During this major transitional period for agriculture, tractors replaced horses, hybrid corn supplanted open-pollinated corn, and soybeans changed from a novelty crop to regular rotation on most farms. During this time, purebred animals with better genetic pedigrees replaced run-of-the-mill livestock, and systematic disease prevention in cattle, swine, and poultry took place. Allen's photographs also document clothing styles, home furnishings, and the items people thought important as they went about their daily lives. Looking closely at tractors, livestock, wagons, planters, sprayers, harvesting equipment, and crops gives one a sense of the changing and fast-paced world of agriculture at that time. This volume contains over 900 picturesque images, most never-before-seen, of men, women, and children working on the farm, which remain powerful reminders of life in rural America at the turn of the twentieth century. As old farmhouses and barns fall victim to age, Allen photographs are all that remain. While those people and times no longer exist today, they do remain "alive" because of the preservation of that history on film. A camera in his hands and an eye for photography allowed Allen to create indelible visual histories that continue to tell the story of agriculture and rural life from long ago.

Defenders of the Faith
The most thorough and thoughtful treatment of the Heavy Metal dress code and the culture it lives and breathes to date. The religious ferocity of Heavy Metal fandom is one of the most fervent in the history of subculture. The display of this fervor has been channeled and distilled throughout time into one sacred object: the battle vest. Often referred to as the Kutten (German for monk's robe), the battle vest serves a multitude of purposes: as a musical CV, a badge of authenticity, a creative practice of identity, and a fashion statement. Defenders of the Faith documents the timeless and universal concept of fandom through the elevation of the battle vests, revering them beyond the sweaty bodies they adorn and the pits they live in, to the status of religious artifact.Photographer Peter Beste has been documenting subcultures for over 20 years. His first book True Norwegian Black Metal (Vice Books) was a portrayal of the extreme end of the genre and the stunning photos contained within translated far beyond the niche fans of the music, selling tens of thousands of copies. His critically acclaimed follow up book Houston Rap showed his breadth as a photographer and Juxtapoz called it "An astonishing and important insight into a great American cultural narrative." Defenders of the Faith is Beste's fourth book that has been edited by Boo-Hooray's Johan Kugelburg and his photographic treatment of traditional heavy metal culture and dress code is similarly striking. Metal fans, fashion enthusiasts, and subculture geeks will come to the book naturally but the images have a gravity of humanity that speaks to universal expression of passion and devotion and make the book instantly relatable.Heavy Metal has survived and evolved through the decades, always maintaining a deep connection with its audience. The decorative armor of the battle vest serves as a visual history of the genre, memorializing the bands and also telling a personal story of each fan. This collaborative nature has always been at the heart of metal, elevating the individual and the communal beyond the dynamic of performer/audience. As Peter Beste put it himself, "For many, it shows how "true" one is by how authentic their patches are, which festivals they have attended, or which bands you got to see way back when. Moments of Truth
A student journalist's photographic memoir of events surrounding the 1970 Kent State shootings Working as a photographer for the Kent State University student newspaper and yearbook, Howard Ruffner was a college sophomore when the tragic shootings of May 4, 1970, occurred--a tragedy that left four students dead and nine others wounded. Asked to serve as a stringer for Life magazine in the days leading up to May 4, as student protests against the Vietnam War intensified and National Guard troops arrived on campus, Ruffner became a witness and documentarian to this important piece of history. Several of his photographs, including one that appeared on the cover of Life, are etched into our collective consciousness when we think about civil unrest and the latter half of the 20th century. Here, in Moments of Truth: A Photographer's Experience of Kent State 1970, Ruffner not only reproduces a collection of nearly 150 of his photographs--many never before published--but also offers a stirring narrative in which he revisits his work and attempts to further examine these events and his own experience of them. It is, indeed, an intensely personal journey that he invites us to share. An epilogue details how Ruffner's images became critical evidence in the civil trials against the National Guard in 1975 and 1978, as he was the first witness called to take the stand. Ruffner also contemplates the words engraved on the path to what is now the May 4 Memorial Site, a place on the National Register of Historic Places: Inquire, Learn, Reflect. Ruffner's project affirms that we need to ask questions, we need to learn about our history, and we all need to reflect on the past so that our mistakes will not be repeated.
The Guardians
For his series, The Guardians, Antaki traveled across Europe, the Middle East and America, photographing shopkeepers or "Guardians." These Guardians are keepers of what Antaki terms "urban temples," unique spaces which, in an age of cookie-cutter, corporate shops, hearken back to an earlier time and mode of urban life. Antaki creates visually arresting portraits of the Guardians in their urban temples that make the viewer connect to the beauty of these often forgotten spaces. Antaki believes that these temples are the heart and soul of every city; they are what give the urban centre its uniqueness in time and place. There is also a duty of memory associated with these spaces. As so many of them are closing, it falls to artists such as Antaki to preserve their memory.
No Superhero
No superhero is a series of work by the acclaimed Scandinavian artist, Ole Marius Jorgensen. The work features meticulously staged, cinematic photographs that depict seemingly ordinary situations which are then infused with a juxtaposed narrative. This unlocks an unexpected and unique world that feels both old and new. Full of mystique and intrigue and set in the artist's native, rural Scandinavia, this series of images follows the protagonist on a silent, solitary journey that emphasises complex emotions. From the playful, to the dark, to the eccentric, each scene is depicted through a lens that captures childhood nostalgia with the hero as an ordinary man.
All Shook Up
This anthology of Thomas Kellner, an artist from the German city of Siegen, is being published in celebration of his exhibition at the American Museum in Bath, England, and includes texts about his Anglo-American works, such as the Boston Athenaeum, the Hearst Tower, NASA's control center in Houston or the Grand Canyon. Richard Wendorf, Roy Flukinger, Freddy Langer, Alison Nordstr繹m, Allison Pappas and Roger Watson introduce the reader to Kellner's works in partly new essays. About the artist: Thomas Kellner (born in 1966 in Bonn) is a German photo artist who is known for his photographs of dancing buildings and interiors from all around the world. For over two decades, Kellner has been focusing on artistic forms of contact and has particularly been inspired by American cities, architecture and landscapes.
Black Album
From the helicopter, Bernd Uhde photographs the world in a vertical plan view. The purity of untouched nature is not the main thread in his enthralling repertoire of motifs - but rather the cultural landscape developed and designed by man. Therefore, coal tips, ore dumps and spoil piles compose the leitmotifs of the photographs compiled in this album, gleaming with a fascinating presence against black backgrounds. All groups of works reflect the artist's interest in shapes and colors, in structures and textures and in the funda-mental principles of composition. And for this exact reason, Bernd Uhde's photographic position has repeatedly been compared to a painter's view - and justifiably so. His artistic oeuvre is characterized by the talent of discovering the unusual and mysterious and at the same time highly sensuous facets of a place by looking at it from a vertical view. The artist discovers scenic "paintings" and the aesthetic potential of these visual finds is only unleashed and only reveals itself through the abstracted view from the distance. About the artist: Bernd Uhde studied painting at the Berlin University of the Arts and film at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). His large-format works have been showcased in various exhibitions and publications all over Europe.

Ron Timehin
"I prefer it when the skies are dramatic and mysterious. When I played the trumpet I used to play a lot of jazz. Jazz can be sad yet beautiful at the same time, and that feeling likes to come through when I shoot with the camera." Ron TimehinRon Timehin is a young photographer from Bromley, in the south side of London. He attended the University of Gloucestershire to study music and traveled the world as a young trumpeter, but could never remember all of the places he visited until he started shooting with his phone. That serendipitous moment launched him on Instagram and the reaction from his followers gave him the confidence to pursue a career in photography. The rigor, training and dedication required of a musician served Ron well in his development as a photographer. He doesn't think twice about going to the Tower Bridge at 4am to capture the perfect light and moment. London Fog is a compilation of spectacular London images, foggy, moody and atmospheric, seen through Ron's eyes and influenced by his music.

Belgicum
"Belgicum is brilliant. It's an epitaph for a country that disappeared before Vanfleteren's eyes, like a sand castle in the breaking waves." - Eric Min in De Morgen Belgicum is a photo project about Belgium. It is not an objective representation of a country but rather a subjective photographical document in black and white. It's a journey of exploration into a small country in the heart of Europe, at the turn of the centuries. More than fifteen years Vanfleteren has wandered through and hunted in the 'Belgicum' territories, guided by emotion and by the love for his homeland. He made a journey through a scarred land, in search of the irretrievable identity of a country with the melancholic soul of an old nation. Over the past ten years, over 11,000 copies were sold of this international bestseller. Belgicum grew out to be a reference work in the Belgian history of photography. On the occasion of the tenth birthday of this cult book, it was reprinted. With text by David Van Reybrouck. Text in English, French and Dutch.
