Alpengl羹hn
The term alpenglow refers to the purple light that can often be seen on the tops of mountains, a spectacularly beautiful natural phenomenon. But in this magnificent volume of photographs, it's not only the Alps that are glowing in warm translucent light, but the girls also. Is this for real? It seems these strikingly pretty creatures have climbed up steep hills and hiked through meadows only to cast off their Dirndls with enthusiastic aplomb. Well, Stefan S繹ll knows exactly how to turn such fantasies into reality. He has discovered the natural beauty of alpine flora and fauna, and uses the mountains where Germany, Austria and Switzerland meet as his setting. His studio in Friedrichshafen on the Bodensee is in the perfect location from which to start these photographic excursions. Stefan S繹ll began to take photos at the age of 15, and soon landscape and portrait photography had become his favourite subject. In addition to his astonishing talent at choosing the ideal background and selecting key details, he also has the rare knack of capturing ideal lighting conditions.

The Amazing Wildlife in the Prince Albert National Park
They say that patience is a virtue. How true that is, especially when it comes to watching and enjoying the amazing wildlife that one can see at the Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan. I certainly enjoyed many magical experiences as I watched how amazing the wildlife was. From otters to minks and from beavers to black bears, not to mention groundhogs and wolf pups. There are amazing birds that one can see, from American white pelicans to belted kingfishers to the amazing fishing ability of the great blue heron, even ospreys, bald eagles, and merlins. It was amazing how much wildlife I was able to see by just being at the Waskesiu River. Even though I had to spend from one to almost three hours every day, it was certainly worth my time to be able to enjoy animals in their natural surroundings and to see the amazing abilities that they possess.
Oxford
"I had access to what felt like a secret world. It was a subject that had been written about and dramatized but I don't think any photographers had ever tackled before. There was a change going on. Someone described it as a 'last hurrah' of the upper classes." - Dafydd Jones Oxford University at the start of the eighties, rife with black ties and ballgowns. A change was on its way - best described by a newspaper as 'the Return of the Bright Young Things'. At this time, Oxford University was synonymous with the wealthy, the powerful and the privileged. Many of the young people in these pictures moved on to have careers in the establishment including Boris Johnson and David Cameron. In these photographs, however, their youth is undeniable: teenagers in full suits celebrate the rise of Thatcher in England and Reagan in America, in between punting on the river, chasing romance and partying through the night. "It was Thatcher's Britain, a period of celebration for those that had money" - Dafydd Jones Oxford: The Last Hurrah shows a world that has been written about and dramatized, yet never photographed. Affectionate and critical, it pokes affectionate fun at its subjects while celebrating English eccentricity. From the architectural marvels of the colleges to misty mornings along the river at dawn, this is Oxford at its most beautiful - and the students of the 1980s at their most raw and honest.

Vivien Liu: Being There
"Architects are trained to see a space before it's realised, so I think photography helps me with that. But I'd also say it's the other way around. My training helps me with the way I photograph. I look at space with a more symmetrical eye, and you see a lot of symmetry in my photos." Vivien Liu Vivien Liu studied architecture at the University of Waterloo and then attended Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, where she was awarded the prestigious Clifford Wong Prize in Housing Design. As an architect, she has worked for nearly a decade in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, China and Hong Kong, where she now resides and first took up photography. As a photographer, she quickly developed a strong sensibility portraying space as seen through the first person, which now defines her style. What began as a weekend pastime has transformed Vivien into one of the most prolific urban photographers in Hong Kong, attracting over 240,000 followers on Instagram. Her first book, Being There explores the dialogue and tension between people and spaces through portraiture, landscapes, and street photography, from the urban density of Hong Kong and Tokyo to epic natural landscapes like Zhangjajie, China. With an architect's artful eye, Ms. Liu captures this juxtaposition in the most beautiful way, sharply highlighting her eye for patterns and symmetry across settings.
Another Life Is Possible
A stunning photo essay paired with 100 stories of members gives a rare glimpse into the Bruderhof, a Christian community that has stood the test of time. Yes, it is possible to create a society where there are no rich or poor, where children and elderly are welcome, where no one lives in isolation. Meet 100 individuals from diverse backgrounds who ventured everything to build a life together where everyone belongs and each can contribute, pooling their income, possessions, talents, and energy. As the community marks its first 100 years, the people in this book tell why they have chosen this radical way of life and share insights gleaned along the way. Their stories represent a cross section of the Bruderhof as an international and intergenerational community. With photography by British photojournalist Danny Burrows, this book celebrates what is possible when people take a leap of faith. It will inspire anyone working to build a more just, peaceful, and sustainable future.

Joshua Chuang & Robert Adams: Boats, Books, Birds
Wooden books, birds and boats beautifully handcrafted by Robert Adams and photographed with luminous clarity by curator and editor Joshua ChangIn the summer and fall of 2017, the photographer Robert Adams (born 1937) invited Joshua Chuang (born 1976)--writer, editor, Senior Curator of Photography at the New York Public Library and frequent collaborator of Adams'--to document the wooden objects that Adams has made over the years for his own consolation and pleasure. The resulting color pictures--of half-model ships and boats, a miscellany of open books and cherished species of birds, all formed by hand from wood--have been brought together with views from the home that Adams shares with his wife Kerstin in Astoria, Oregon, to reveal a little-known aspect of his search for coherence in a fractured world.

Views of Eagles MereA Timeless Mountain Village
Eagles Mere is a remote village which sits at a high point in the Allegheny Mountains of north central Pennsylvania, located in the second least populated county in the state. Tucked in among state game lands and state forest, one side of the mountain drains into the Loyalsock Creek, 1,200 feet lower, and the other side empties 1,300 feet below the summit into Muncy Creek. Although much of surrounding Sullivan County is forested and takes its culture from the eastern mountain region, Eagles Mere has been a retreat for the gentry from Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Baltimore since the late nineteenth century. Bankers and businessmen built large summer homes in the early 20th century to take advantage of the pristine lake. The other, year-round residents of the region take their recreation in cabins owned by hunting clubs, in search of whitetail deer and black bear in the fall. Although railroad shareholders built a narrow-gauge railway to the Victorian resort hotels at the summit of the mountain, a federal two-lane highway designated the Appalachian Throughway now runs at its base. U.S. 220 weaves among wooden houses along the creeks. These year-round houses in the valleys represent a practical and traditional eastern mountain architecture. The design of the valley houses differs from the more formal style of the mountaintop cottages, which are often owned by those who live most of the year in cities. Bowhunters and bankers; high mileage four-wheel drive Ford pickup trucks and new Chevrolet Suburbans with high-tech strollers; year-round loggers and seasonal urban refugees, all populate the mountain.Eagles Mere and Sullivan County are a photographer's delight, blending mountain overlooks, covered bridges, waterfalls, ten-bedroom cottages from the early twentieth century, traditional mountain architecture, lake views, sailboats and kayaks. Go down the back roads in the county, and the landscape looks decidedly Appalachian, as old farm houses with fading paint, big barns, and gravel byways become the norm. Eagles Mere has been captured well in online digital photography by highly regarded local photographers Julie Stauffer and Rick Liebert. Prints by professional photographer Terry Wild hang prominently in public spaces on the mountain. There are excellent local history books with old Eagles Mere photographs from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This book is the first generally available publication of contemporary, twenty-first century Eagles Mere photographs. It represents my work from 2014 through 2019, six years of exploring the mountain and the surrounding counties. Having come to Eagles Mere since 1960, I am guilty of some nostalgia for an earlier time of spending two unstructured months every summer, wandering the woods and swimming at the beach. The photos here are all mine, and reflect my judgment of what is arresting, fascinating, or representative. I have mostly chosen the pretty over the gritty, but you will find some backroads selections which show the diversity of the county and suggest the deeper needs of its year-round community. If you choose to look a bit closer in Sullivan County, you will find where Brigadoon's gauzy periphery meets a traditional eastern mountain culture.
Being Besides Myself
This is a book of photographs and fragments. As a spell and as a talisman. In other words, a grimoire. Gelatin silver prints developed in the darkroom prompt reflections on sensuality and magic. It's not only about what you hear, taste, smell, see, and touch. It's about how you do it. But there's no instruction. Who can teach others how to sense the world? The only thing you can say is that in this sensing, what you experience is the astonishment of realizing that you're always besides yourself when you eat, see things, touch others, smell a flower, or hear music. Sensing the world is similar to the power of being in love, when you're really besides yourself. When in love, you're beyond time. If you speak at all, then your words hit the other in their gut, displacing their common sense. The effect is like a powerful witchcraft. It makes you snap out of your cultural conditioning, and start seeing things as they are. The words and images in this book explore the dimension of eradicated time in the face of the sensual that's fraught with anguish, unfulfilled desires, and a zest for life that only the immutable death can give us. The aim of this book is thus not even modest, as it seeks to capture the eternal spell that lovers cast on themselves when they are besides themselves, at the mercy of timelessness and infinite displacement.
Light on the LandscapePhotographs and Lessons from a Life in Photography
See the images and read the stories behind the creative process of one of America's most respected landscape photographers, William Neill. For more than two decades, William Neill has been offering his thoughts and insights about photography and the beauty of nature in essays that cover the techniques, business, and spirit of his photographic life. Curated and collected here for the first time, and accompanying 128 beautiful reproductions of Neill's photographs, these essays are both pragmatic and profound, offering readers an intimate look behind the scenes at Neill's creative process behind individual photographs as well as a discussion of the larger and more foundational topics that are key to his philosophy and approach to work. Drawing from the tradition of behind-the-scenes books like Ansel Adams' Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs and Galen Rowell's Mountain Light: In Search of the Dynamic Landscape, Light on the Landscape covers in detail the core photographic fundamentals such as light, composition, camera angle, and exposure choices, but it also deftly considers those subjects that are less frequently examined: portfolio development, marketing, printmaking, nature stewardship, inspiration, preparation, self-improvement, and more. The result is a profound and wide-ranging exploration of that magical convergence of light, land, and camera. Filled with beautiful and inspiring photographs, Light on the Landscape is also full of the kind of wisdom that only comes from a deeply thoughtful photographer who has spent a lifetime communicating with a camera. Incorporating the lessons within the book, you too can learn to achieve not only technically excellent and beautiful images, but photographs that truly rise above your best and reveal your deeply personal and creative perspective--your vision, your voice.

Historic Churches in TexasThrough the Lens Series, Volume II
Before independence from Mexico in 1836, the Catholic faith was the only religion settlers in Texas, known as Texians, could legally practice. To acquire land in Texas, then a part of Mexico known as Coahuila y Tejas, one had to be a member of the Roman Catholic Church or agree to convert to Catholicism. Although a few Protestant church buildings were erected before Texas's independence in 1836, most were erected after 1836 because of Mexico's strict laws prohibiting and often severe punishment for practicing any faith other than Catholicism. The few Protestant church buildings that were erected prior to Texas independence were usually erected along the margins of Texas in the more remote regions of North and East Texas, distancing themselves from Mexico's center of government in San Antonio. The first Protestant church established in Texas that has been in continuous service was organized by the Reverend Milton Estill in 1833 as the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Old Shiloh, a small community located about four miles north of Clarksville. In 1848, the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Congregation joined with the Presbyterian congregation in Clarksville to become the First Presbyterian Church, Clarksville. The First Presbyterian Congregation in Clarksville is recognized as the oldest Protestant church in continuous service in the state of Texas. After Texians won their independence in 1836, religious congregations began to meet openly and to build houses of worship. Most of these early church buildings were poorly built and did not survive the ravages of time. Eventually, stronger buildings were erected. But even then, with open fireplaces and wood-burning stoves providing heat and candles or kerosene lanterns providing the primary source of light, church buildings were often destroyed by accidental fires. In addition, with time, congregations often outgrew their vintage church buildings or could no longer afford the high cost of maintaining the older, outdated buildings. As a result, congregations abandoned them to erect larger and often more elaborate edifices. Once abandoned, the old church buildings were razed or, if left standing, rapidly deteriorated.Over the past twelve years, my wife and I have visited and photographed almost one thousand historic churches in Texas. Photographing these historic church buildings and learning about the pioneers that often at great risk founded and maintained them has been a project of love. Visiting these historic churches and meeting the people that maintain them today has been inspirational.
Stephen Waddell
Waddell's refined photographic explorations evoke his keen awareness about the poetics of space and the history of painting, while also walking the line between documentary and intimately personal visualizations. -Edward BurtynskyFor decades Vancouver photographer Stephen Waddell (born 1968) has reinvigorated street photography and reportage through keen observation and an empathetic eye for social subjects. Initially a painter and filmmaker, Waddell brings questions about the very notion of realism to picture-making. He often references pictorial histories, such as early photography or classical painting, acknowledging that observation is informed by recognition and an unconscious awareness of existing images. Working with both analog and digital tools, Waddell's highly considered approach involves experimenting continuously with new processes and materials. The subtlety of his photography is amplified by a painterly sensibility that emphasizes qualities of light. Illumination becomes a reference to photographic perception as well as to human vision. Consistent across his work are close affinities between a print's subject matter and its material qualities.
