Leap
This important work from debut author Jessica Galica blends narrative, research, and pep talk to empower women to reclaim control of their career trajectories and define success on their own terms. "A must read for working women and parents, whether you need inspiration to take the leap or simply comfort to know that you are not alone" (Eve Rodsky, New York Times bestselling author of Fair Play and Find Your Unicorn Space)More than three million women left the workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, and even more are considering leaving or downshifting. Corporate women feel misled. Told they could "have it all," women instead feel dissatisfied and exasperated. They have not lost ambition or dreams for their career, but they are reckoning with their corporate reality: environments that are designed for men, the burden of caretaking labor at home, and bias in hiring and promotions. These factors leave many women stuck-feeling unfulfilled but fearful about making a leap to reinvent their careers. If this describes you, then Leap will give you the guidance and confidence you need to pivot toward fulfillment and authenticity. Intrigued by other women who have made gratifying career shifts, career strategist Jessica Galica embarked on a series of interviews and discovered that her story-building a career by doing everything "right" but waking up lost-is not unique. Leap encourages women at a similar crossroads to let go of stale and rigid narratives around work and instead focus on purpose. Drawing from the stories of courageous women who took the leap and Galica's own career journey, Leap examines: The feelings that lead women to yearn for something different in their careerThe strategies that help women to embrace new possibilities and pivotsThe fulfillment that comes from making the leap

Markets, Morals and Development
This book presents, or rather "re-presents", the intricacies of a developing economy in the light of recent theoretical developments in economics while also providing a fresh perspective on the perceived inadequacies of the discipline in addressing the discontents of the contemporary global economic order. The book argues that there is scope for economics to be a more humane discipline and more relevant to contemporary economic problems by embracing new ideas, including those from other disciplines. It attempts to show how economic concepts and theories can be contextualised to help better understand real-life economic phenomena; how to rethink the ways in which the market economy can address the moral issues of human wellbeing and social justice; and, overall, how the study of economics and public discourses on economic issues can be made more engaging as well as more relevant to the problems of developing countries. Based on public lectures given by the author in Dhaka, and using illustrations from Bangladesh, India and other countries, the book offers an authoritative understanding of diverse economic realities by taking a fresh look at the familiar. Comprehensive and accessible, the book will be of interest to students and researchers of economics, development economics and policy, sociology and business studies as well as to journalists, public intellectuals and policymakers in developing countries.

Islamic Management Practices in Financial Institutions
This book draws on a range of theoretical foundations, approaches and management practices that are culturally and jurisdictionally appropriate in several Muslim countries. As such, it contributes to an emerging specialism in comparative management and leadership theory that is oriented toward a broader and more diverse set of perspectives, particularly from the non-Western world, given that the importance of values, ethics, and culture have recently been recognized as a key contributing factor to management knowledge development. The author offers an in-depth overview of the Islamic management strategies that have successfully been implemented in selected Malaysian banking and non-banking financial institutions and then outlines how the application of such strategies leads to increased integrity, efficiency and performance. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the introduction, historical background and methods used in collection of data. The second part consists of a range of real-world case studies, while part three deals with the approaches to be used in the teaching of these cases followed by conclusions and recommendations. These cases studies map the strategic aspects of organizational structure and illustrate the motives that influence Malaysian managers' choices in seeking specific responses to the situations at hand, which are in harmony with the traditions in Islamic inquiry. As such, management scholars can build a foundation for conceptual and theoretical propositions relevant to Muslim culture and environment that will have practical significance. The book provides a wealth of information and enables researchers not only to identify the determinants of knowledge structure and its context but also the evolution of practice.

The Hacker Ethic
You may be a hacker and not even know it. Being a hacker has nothing to do with cyberterrorism, and it doesn't even necessarily relate to the open-source movement. Being a hacker has more to do with your underlying assumptions about stress, time management, work, and play. It's about harmonizing the rhythms of your creative work with the rhythms of the rest of your life so that they amplify each other. It is a fundamentally new work ethic that is revolutionizing the way business is being done around the world. Without hackers there would be no universal access to e-mail, no Internet, no World Wide Web, but the hacker ethic has spread far beyond the world of computers. It is a mind-set, a philosophy, based on the values of play, passion, sharing, and creativity, that has the potential to enhance every individual's and company's productivity and competitiveness. Now there is a greater need than ever for entrepreneurial versatility of the sort that has made hackers the most important innovators of our day. Pekka Himanen shows how we all can make use of this ongoing transformation in the way we approach our working lives.

Elite Business Schools
Social scientists are paying increasing attention to the business and financial elites: There's a great need to understand who these elites are, what they do, and what makes them tick, as individuals but also as a class. By examining elite business schools, the institutions that train and prepare people to assume important leadership and decision-making positions in business, finance and related sectors, we may also learn how the economic elites are made. A key argument in this book is that elite schools are known to create powerful groups in society, offering them the intellectual and analytical means to act as leaders, but, most importantly, the social, moral and aesthetic skills that are deemed necessary to exercise power; in all essential respects elite schools consecrate people. By dominating much of higher education today, and by doing so in a way that creates and reproduces a market-based organization and control of society, elite business schools represent certain interests and ideologies that affect the lives of most people. In understanding how the modern economy is run, elite business schools, therefore, represent critical study objects. This book, based on an in-depth study of the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), offers a sociological analysis of the world of elite business schools. Specifically, this book examines the consecration of SSE's students from a number of perspectives and in a number of situations, focusing on student union activities, school culture, faculty behavior, teaching, courses and alumni events, noting the symbolic importance of economics and particularly the school's unique relation among the world's business schools to the Nobel Prize. The book addresses the topics with regards to the sociology of elites, management education and organizational studies and will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students also interested in business history, higher education studies, and sociology of education.
Entrepreneurship and Green Finance Practices
Environmental sustainability is the future of business. To achieve sustainable development and gain a competitive advantage in the business world, companies must adapt new practices to "go green." While market leader China has implemented a "New Infrastructure" plan to increase green growth, investing $2.6 trillion in renewable energy and introducing a five-year economic plan focusing on technology and innovation, Southeast Asia is far behind. Entrepreneurship and Green Finance Practices focuses on critical issues such as the role of Green Financing in Green Entrepreneurship in Asian Countries and looks for the mechanisms that can help in idea-generation and the launching of successful Green Start-ups. Green entrepreneurs can address environmental challenges, create new solutions, act as drivers for sustainable growth and serve as a source of motivation for others. Moreover, the entrepreneurship initiated on sustainable production and consumption can help better manage resources, resulting in economic growth. The concept of adopting green practices opens new dimensions of thinking for businesses and creates new opportunities for entrepreneurs - Entrepreneurship and Green Finance Practices is invaluable for social scientists, students, academicians, academic institutions, policymakers, and other related stakeholders.

Parliaments and Post-Legislative Scrutiny

Is the practice of Post-Legislative Scrutiny emerging as a new dimension within the oversight role of parliament? What approach do parliaments apply in assessing the implementation and impact of legislation? These are the fascinating questions guiding this book. Case studies offer an in-depth look at how particular countries and the European Union conduct Post-Legislative Scrutiny. The analysis puts Post-Legislative Scrutiny in the context of parliamentary oversight and parliaments' engagement in the legislative cycle. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate the value of Post-Legislative Scrutiny as a public good, benefiting the executive, legislature and the people in ensuring that law delivers what is expected of it, as well as to respond to the need for greater clarity as to what is meant by the term. In this way, the publication can assist legislatures to think more clearly as to what precisely they understand, and seek to achieve, by Post-Legislative Scrutiny. This book is the result of the co-operation between the Centre for Legislative Studies at the University of Hull and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of The Journal of Legislative Studies.

This book sets out to examine the underlying educational implications of rapid economic transformation, using illustrative analyses of teacher labour markets during the years of unprecedented economic growth in China.Combining historic document archive and empirical micro-level quantitative data, the book examines trends in teacher labour market and their relevant consequences by investigating wage-attractiveness of the teaching profession, consequential shifts in the composition of the teacher force, implications for student learning, and emerging alternative career destinations for teacher exits. While this book focuses on a specific country case, its analytic context is broadly relevant for a range of developing countries that aspire to better understand, through an occupational choice lens, how shifting economic landscapes influence teacher career decisions and consequentially teacher quality and student learning.Teacher policy scholars, comparative education researchers, labour economists, economic and education historians, teacher union researchers, and education policy makers will find this volume of interest.

Research on Migrant Children's Educational Choices and Fiscal Policy
Drawing from global insights and the education supply and demand theory, this book investigates migrant children's education in China, as well as the educational financial policies, which serves as both a background and possible solutions. From a comparative perspective, the education fiscal policies regarding issues with migrant/immigrant students and inequality in the United States and Europe were first examined, before comprehensive theoretical framework is constructed to evaluate the government and public schools' input and migrant children's educational demand in China. Their school choices, academic performances, educational choices and impact factors from the perspectives of class, gender, society and family are then discussed in depth. By tracing back to previous fiscal policies regarding migrant children in China and local policies in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the author further interrogates the existing challenges, possible strategies and solutions. This book will appeal to scholars of education economics, education policy, educational equality and those who're generally interested in Chinese education and society.
Legitimacy Beyond the State
This volume addresses the normative legitimacy of the international order, asking how we can make sense of legitimacy claims of increasingly diverse global governance institutions and practices and how their legitimacy relates to and differs from state legitimacy.State legitimacy is a central concern of modern political thought but is inadequate when applied to institutions that differ from the state in type, level of governance, scope, and much else. We need a new, tailored approach to the legitimacy of institutions beyond the state, especially international and transnational institutions. Such an approach includes foundational questions: what does it mean for institutions to be legitimate that have radically different purposes, means, interests, capacities, constituents, and roles from states? And what standards do such institutions have to meet in order to count as legitimate? The contributions to this volume seek to advance the debate on these questions at both abstract and more concrete levels. They range from conceptual questions about the nature of legitimacy and international institutions, to rule of law, to the legitimacy of the UN Security Council, the International Criminal Court, and occupying military forces in the face of challenges specific to their nature and context. Together they demonstrate both the promise and challenges of theorizing legitimacy beyond the state. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.

Music, Business and Peacebuilding
Business schools are placing more emphasis on the role of business in society. Top business school accreditors are shifting to mandating that schools teach their students about the social impact of business, including AACSB standards to require the incorporation of business impact on society into all elements of accredited institutions. Researchers are also increasingly focused on issues related to sustainability, but in particular to business and peace as a field. A strong strain of scholarship argues that ethics is nurtured by emotions and through aesthetic quests for moral excellence. The arts (and music as shown specifically in this book) can be a resource to nudge positive emotions in the direction toward ethical behavior and, logically, then toward peace. Business provides a model for positive interactions that not only foster long-term successful business but also incrementally influences society. This book provides an opportunity for integration and recognition of how music (and other art forms) can further encourage business toward the direction of peace while business provides a platform for the dissemination and modeling of the positive capabilities of music toward the aims of peace in the world today. The primary market for this book is the academic audience. Unlike many other academic books, however, the interdisciplinary nature of the book allows for multiple academic audiences. Thus, this book reaches into schools of music, business, political science, film studies, sports and society studies, the humanities, ethics and, of course, peace studies.

The Research Impact Agenda
This book contributes to the growing body of work addressing the processes and consequences of national governments' audits of the performance of higher education institutions (HEIs) in different countries. The book discusses one recent area of focus within these audits, namely the measurement of universities' societal and economic impact. The Research Impact Agenda offers a problematisation of the research impact agenda, especially in relation to the impact generated by academics based in schools of business and management. It scrutinises the often unintended but nevertheless significant consequences of this agenda for individuals and higher education institutions, such as the reproduction of existing inequalities in academia and the crowding out of other key activities of business schools. It puts forward a range of recommendations for researchers, policymakers, university and business school leaders, and individual academics. The book will be of interest to a wide range of readers - regardless of their formal position, organisational affiliation or career stage - who consider it important to reduce and remove inequalities and inequities within the HE sector and to make universities and business schools more inclusive. The readers will benefit from the opportunity to engage in reflection aimed at transforming the current framing, delivery and assessment of business and management research impact.
