An assessment on the efficacy of delivery channels in group savings and loan scheme in Malawi
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Economics - Finance, course: BSc in Community Development, language: English, abstract: Group savings and loan scheme is a time-bound accumulating savings and credit activity. It is an informal microfinance where there are no financial intermediaries. Self-selected persons in a group of at least 15 to 30 people form a group to mobilize their own savings regularly in a pool and borrow from the pool fund and repay back the borrowed funds hereby referred to as loans with interest, after a period usually between one and three months. On a date chosen by the members, usually after about a year, all the financial assets are divided among the members in proportion to each one's savings. This pay-out is called the "action audit". The groups normally reform immediately and start a new cycle of savings and lending. Non-governmental organisations normally build the capacity of these groups to operate efficiently by training them on financial education especially on savings and loan management. More recently, the significance of Savings and loan services reaching financially excluded populations with low cost, easily accessible financial services has attracted interest of many stakeholders globally. There has been a move by nongovernmental organisations to improve the outreach to reach the very poor in remote areas of Malawi and Africa as a whole. Use of different delivery channels have been employed to achieve this objective. One of the key failures of the conventional microfinance has been its limited outreach to remote areas and poorer people in them, especially in rural areas of Malawi. The study aimed at assessing the efficacy of the delivery channels in group savings and loan scheme outreach in Nkhata bay district in specific areas of Traditional Authority Mbwana. Four aspects of savings and loan outreach were assessed: people reached with the group savings and loan, members' satisfaction with the savings and loan
Development, Social Change and Environmental Sustainability
Nowadays, the concept of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is starting to replace the concept of MDGs (Millennium Developmental Goals). It is a global goal adopted by all United Nations member states. It emphasizes the idea that the development of every country can only be achieved by balancing other factors such as social, economic, and environmental sustainability. It is already clear how sustainable development works with environmental ethics and management. However, there are still issues regarding the sustainable development and human well-being. Sustainable development should focus on finding a way for society to meet their present needs for the long term without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This international seminar provides research results and literature regarding the topic of sustainable development concept, the dynamics of sustainable development and social change, and environmental sustainability. The international seminar, entitled 1st International Conference on Contemporary Sociology and Educational Transformation, listed speakers from several countries providing an overview on human and environmental resilience. This book contains a selection of papers presented at the conference.
The European Corporation
The product of a long-standing collaboration and recent collective research effort by members of the CGEUI network, The European Corporation makes an important contribution to the ongoing debate over convergence to the Anglo-Saxon model of corporate governance and persistence in corporate governance and law in Europe. This book fills the gap in the debate, and literature's lack of country-specific evidence on the evolution of ownership and control which has proven to be a serious impediment to both legal and economic analysis and evidence-based policymaking. It provides systematic and comparable accounts of ownership and control structure change (respectively persistence) in large firms across Europe over the decades following the 'global corporate governance revolution' in the 1990s. Focusing on countries in Europe's four main regions, this volume presents and discusses the net effects of the interplay between the 'global corporate governance revolution' and of its main countervailing forces in Europe.
The development, determinants and valuation of cash holdings of Japanese companies
Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, University of Hamburg, language: English, abstract: Why would companies hold cash in their bank accounts, when cash itself does not produce any further value like an investment in a machine does? The academic literature finds different concepts for the reasons of corporate cash holdings. While Keynes (1936) proposes a transaction- and precautionary-motive to hold cash, Jensen (1986) states that managers have a vested interest to accumulate cash, because it exempts them from capital market disciplining. However, country-specific factors and reforms in Japan might also induce the companies to save up liquid assets. The aim of this paper is to study the development, determinants and valuation of Japanese corporate cash holdings in the period from 1988 to 2021, based on the approach of Bates et al. (2009). Furthermore, I want to study how the roles of theoretical cash holding motives and corporate governance (reforms) in Japan are reflected in the three objects of research from above. Since the variables only proxy the theoretical motives, the object of this paper is not to create clear boundaries but to give an insight in the possible forms of their appearing. Therefore the next chapter gives a comprehensive overview about the academic literature regarding the theoretical background for corporate cash holdings and the current state of research of the interaction between corporate governance and cash holdings in Japan. The motives and findings from this section are revisited when explaining the results of the empirical part in this paper. The empirical part is divided in three main parts. The first part discusses the development of corporate cash holdings in general and for different kinds of companies. In the subsequent part, I put a focus on the factors that determine the cash holdings and how they serve as proxies for the theoretical motives, as discussed befo

Tokenization of Private Equity Funds in Germany. Direct and Indirect Participation and Feasibility
Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,0, International School Of Management, Campus Frankfurt, language: English, abstract: The aim of the master thesis is to examine whether private equity is suitable for tokenization. After analyzing different characteristics of private equity, such as the illiquidity or mechanisms like capital calls, the master thesis concluded that the asset class is suitable. Private equity shares in the form of security tokens can help to reduce illiquidity and cashflows like the capital calls can be automated by the use of smart contracts. For the tokenization, the master thesis recommends to use existing standards, such as the Ethereum blockchain or the ERC-1400 token. Furthermore, different structures for issuing private equity tokens were elaborated. These include a structure for an indirect participation via a special purpose vehicle which issues tokens and simultaneously invests into a fund, but also a direct participation where the fund itself can issue tokens. During the description of possible structures, all relevant laws were included. These include the German Electronic Securities Act (eWpG), German Banking Act (KWG), Security Prospectus Act (WpPG), Capital Investment Act (VermAnlG), Securities Trading Act (WpHG) and the German Investment Code (KAGB). All structures were evaluated from the perspective of private equity funds, institutional investors, private investors or other relevant intermediaries. Also, benefits and challenges for the different structures and participants were discussed. The benefits include an increase in efficiency of several processes, potential cost savings, the possibility for funds to reach more investors or the possibility for investors to diversify their portfolio more. Still, these benefits could only be made use of, if major challenges are mastered by the market participants. These include an insufficient legal framework, different
Real Estate Price Bubbles as Irrational Exuberance. A Critical Analysis of the German Real Estate Market
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Economy - Real estate industry, grade: 1,3, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: The development of real estate prices is of extraordinary importance for the financial and economic system, as undesirable developments could endanger financial stability, as seen in the subprime crisis, which eventually evolved into a global financial crisis. The same month the dot-com bubble burst, the Nobel Prize winner and current book author Robert J. Shiller published the non-fictional, bestselling first edition of his book, named "Irrational Exuberance", in which he explains his research on the occurrences and the causes of historical financial crises, while supplementing the conclusions with aspects of behavioural finance and social studies. As Shiller's assertions are mainly based on the US market, research has been conducted to clarify whether his housing index and the concept of irrational exuberance can be applied to the German real estate market. By the detailed consideration of selected aspects of the book in connection with the conception of academic literature, this thesis finds that his ideas can principally be transferred to assess whether the German real estate market currently exhibits bubbly tendencies. This assessment is conducted, however, there are limitations in the sole consideration as an indicator as well as in the critical evaluation of the German real estate market.

In the first chapter, "Money Laundering," the book examines the process of disguising the proceeds of crime and integrating them into the legitimate financial system. It provides an in-depth look at the techniques used to conceal the origin, ownership, and destination of money and the challenges faced by regulators in detecting and preventing it. The second chapter, "Crypto Currency: Ethereum," examines one of the most popular decentralized digital currencies and blockchain platforms, Ethereum. The third chapter, "Dynamics of Home Lending in Relation to the Broader Financial System," takes a closer look at the home lending process and how it affects the availability of credit for households and the stability of the housing market. The chapter also examines the factors that influence home lending and its impact on the broader financial system. In "Symbolism on Currency," the fourth chapter, the book delves into the cultural, historical, and political meaning of the designs, images, and inscriptions on paper money and coins. The book then takes a look at the innate risks of the North American financial systems and economy in "Chapter 5: Innate Risks of North American financial systems and economy" and the development of financial institutions through history in "Chapter 6: The History of Financial Institutions." The European Capital Markets Union. A Systematic Literature Review
Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1.3, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to explore the perception of the establishment of the European Capital Markets Union (CMU) in literature. After the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and the Euro debt crisis lead to a recession, the task of the CMU is to stimulate the European economy, strengthen European financial integration while presenting the EU as a competitive counterpart to other global financial markets. Being part of the financial markets, Capital Markets (CMs) play an important role for financial market-oriented economies. Therefore, this paper will discuss what benefits the CMU can offer in particular for small and medium sized companies (SMEs) in terms of diversifying their funding sources in other words an increase of market-based financing.
Economics of Economy Pricing
The economy of the industrialized countries in the 21st century has already moved to a new level of mass production and technology never seen before, thanks in part to globalization, advanced technologies, new organization management methods, and innovative supply chain. A relatively large number of mass-produced commodities (characterized as non-premium) and services in Western economies are somehow sold at discounts rather than regular prices at a much higher frequency that was never seen before. This phenomenon has completely changed how we look at the theory of the firm in microeconomics. This book is indented to introduce new ideas and theories by challenging the current modern micro-and-macro economic theories. In a globalized world, the economies of advanced countries have entered a new phase called "economy pricing," where most of the mass commodities are sold at a low price during certain periods of the year, called 'sales events'. In addition to low prices, most industrialized countries have had record low inflation, low-interest rates, low growth, and low unemployment rates. This book will contend how the "Economy Pricing System" is about to revolutionize how people look at a real economy's micro and macro effects.
Financial Interdependence, Digitalization and Technological Rivalries
This Palgrave Pivot investigates how the Chinese and United States financial systems are becoming increasingly interdependent, in spite of a simultaneous technological rivalry and 'decoupling' between the two nations. The book offers a comparative analysis of Sino-US financial systems before and after the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, demonstrating the deepening integration of China into global financial markets and its move from an indirect bank-based system towards a direct market-oriented system. It discusses the economic and technological competition that has arisen between the US and China, the two largest financial centers based on financial technology, and demonstrates the differences in national interest driving processes of digitalization and FinTech applications. At the same time, the book points to ways in which a market-oriented global financial system and the rapid international growth of financial technology make future cooperation inevitable and necessary. This book places Sino-US financial relations in a broader financial-economic perspective and will be of interest to academics, consultants and students working in banking and finance, international financial markets, comparative economics, monetary theory and Chinese business studies.

Contemporary Studies of Risks in Emerging Technology
With the rapid development of technologies, it becomes increasingly important for us to remain up-to-date on new and emerging technologies. This series, therefore, aims to deliver content on current and future technologies and how the young generation benefits from this. The global financial crisis has highlighted major weaknesses in financial records, information, and data. These weaknesses have led to inadequacies in the access to financial records and information, higher operational risks, flawed bankruptcies, and foreclosure proceedings. The Lockdown due to the ongoing pandemic COVID-19 has increased the scope for criminals to exploit vulnerabilities and commit financial crimes. The increased online presence and homeworking have significantly expanded the attack surface for cybercriminals. Criminals are exploiting vulnerabilities, increasing the risks of cyber-attacks, money laundering and terrorist financing. Research is therefore needed to identify trends, tools and applications that will provide the needed records, information, and data to support more effective financial analysis and risk management. Financial Technology (FinTech) has become one of the most pioneering and cost-effective disruptive technologies. Initial adaptation of FinTech solutions has permitted several start-ups, financial service providers, and other assorted sectors to accomplish an augmented pace of growth. Contemporary Studies of Risks in Emerging Technology: Part B also highlights how emerging technologies are altering the subtleties of doing business for financial services benefactors, possibility of emerging technologies, advantages and disadvantages, technology linked issues/challenges in financial services, and also highlights drivers of this revolution.
Contemporary Studies of Risks in Emerging Technology
Banking in the Age of the Platform Economy
The 2008 global financial crisis and the concurrent rise of the platform economy have had profound effects on the banking sector. Over the past decade and a half, banking leaders have had to contend with rapidly evolving regulatory, technological, and competitive forces. The pace of technological change has been formidable with advances in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and blockchain technology. These forces have brought to the forefront new managerial imperatives that banking leaders have to make sense of as they strategise in light of these unfolding new realities. Banking in the Age of the Platform Economy explores the strategies that managers and leaders at banks and other financial institutions have adopted in response to the rise of the platform economy, the new forces of interdependence that it entails, and the risks/opportunities involved in cocreating value with external stakeholders. With its discussion of the strategies of interdependence and value cocreation that the top twenty banks in Europe adopted between 2008 and 2019, this book is essential reading for academics, banking and fintech professionals, and management consultants that advise banks and fintechs.
Deal Sourcing in Venture Capital. Overview of Common and Emerging Approaches
Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, Pforzheim University, language: English, abstract: There are different approaches to deal sourcing - some are tried and tested over decades, others are based on the latest technologies and trends. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide an orderly overview of the common as well as emerging approaches of deal sourcing, to critically appreciate the approaches as well as to compare them with each other. In order to do justice to the rapidly changing and very practice-oriented world of venture capital, both science and practice will be considered in the following. On the one hand, reference is made to academic studies, monographs, and papers, while in addition individual voices from the industry, VC firms or otherwise involved institutions are included. Chapter 2 starts with several general definitions and delimitations on the topic to ensure unambiguous use of terms. The following two subsections first deal with the position of deal sourcing in the investment process, and then present the connection and importance of deal flow. Subsequently, the third chapter starts with an overview of the following chapter structure, ensued by a discussion of several traditional and modern approaches to deal sourcing, before comparing them at the end of this chapter. Finally, the work ends with a conclusion, in order to summarize the main results and give a brief outlook for the future.

Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence
Blockchain and artificial intelligence are perhaps the two most significant disruptive technologies this century and both will significantly rewire the world of global financial markets and the world in which we live. While blockchain offers a number of significant advantages over traditional forms of finance including lower cost and massive increases in operational efficiencies of traded markets, property records and a whole host of transaction processes, artificial intelligence is moving fast from basic structured machine learning doing menial yet important big data tasks like credit card fraud detection to predictive analysis and real-time real-world risk management and investment decision making. There is still a lot of confusion in the market about cryptocurrencies, bitcoin and the underlying blockchain technology. Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence highlights the underlying technologies of blockchain and the differences between cryptocurrencies and blockchain financial applications. It explores the current AI offerings and gives a vision of the fast-moving developments in this area including the many solutions that are expected to revolutionize the way financial and commodity markets will operate in the future.

The Mars Hypothesis
The Mars Hypothesis presents the idea that the Federal Reserve can set interest rates based on the movements of the planet Mars. In this book, data going back to 1896 shows that as of April 2020, percentage-wise, the Dow Jones rose 857%. When Mars was within 30 degrees of the lunar node since 1896, the Dow rose 136%. When Mars was not within 30 degrees of the lunar node, the Dow rose 721%. Mars retrograde phases during the time Mars was within 30 degrees of the lunar node was not counted in that data as Mars being within 30 degrees of the lunar node. The purpose of the book is to not only hypothesize that the Federal Reserve can set interest rates based on the movements of the planet Mars, but to also demonstrate exactly how and at the same time, formulate a system that would enable the Federal Reserve to carry out its application in real time. Using the observation of the planet Mars, the book contains a strategy for controlling inflation, interest rate setting recommendations and the predicted dates of future bear market time periods all the way thru the year 2098.
Fintech and the Future of Finance
Fintech-the application of digital technology to financial services-is reshaping the future of finance. Digital technologies are revolutionizing payments, lending, investment, insurance, and other financial products and services-and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this process. Digitalization of financial services and money is helping to bridge gaps in access to financial services for households and firms and is promoting economic development. Improved access to basic financial services translates into better firm productivity and growth for micro and small businesses, as well as higher incomes and resilience to improve the lives of the poor. Technology can lower transaction costs by overcoming geographical access barriers; increasing the speed, security, and transparency of transactions; and allowing for more tailored financial services that better serve consumers, including the poor. Women can especially benefit. Yet too many people and firms still lack access to essential financial services that could help them thrive. It is time for policy makers to embrace fintech opportunities and implement policies that enable and encourage safe financial innovation and adoption. Fintech and the Future of Finance: Market and Policy Implications explores the implications of fintech and the digital transformation of financial services for market outcomes, on the one hand, and regulation and supervision, on the other hand-and how these interact. The report, which provides a high-level perspective for senior policy makers, is accompanied by notes that focus on salient issues for a more technical audience. As the financial sector continues to transform itself, policy trade-offs will evolve, and regulators will need to ensure that market outcomes remain aligned with core policy objectives. Several policy implications emerge. 1.Manage risks, while fostering beneficial innovation and competition. 2.Broaden monitoring horizons and reassess regulatory perimeters. 3.Review regulatory, supervisory, and oversight frameworks. 4.Be mindful of evolving policy trade-offs as fintech adoption deepens. 5.Monitor market structure and conduct to maintain competition. 6.Modernize and open financial infrastructures. 7.Ensure public money remains fit for the digital world. 8.Pursue strong cross-border coordination and sharing of information and best practices.
