Asset and Liability Management Manual under the Basel Committee's d368 IRRBB regulation.
With the publication of the Basel BCBS d368 text on interest rate risk in the banking book, asset/liability management has undergone a real revolution. The April 2016 directive ("IRRBB") has indeed translated into regulation the need to implement a dual approach between stabilizing the bank's economic value ("EVE") and dynamically modeling its net interest margin ("NIM"). For this purpose, the regulator has defined criteria of rigor and quality such that they have given rise to a full-fledged specialty within the finance departments. This was a necessity following the numerous accidents in the management of bank balance sheets in recent years. The aim of this manual is to provide the theoretical and practical foundations of asset-liability management in a synthetic and rigorous manner. The book is intended for all financial practitioners: treasurers, financial directors, asset/liability managers, risk managers, financial advisors, etc.

The Pink Tax
Unleash your inner financial feminist and smash the patriarchy, one dollar at a time Women don't build wealth in the same way that men do - and it's not because we shop too much. Younger generations are struggling to match the financial successes that generations before them experienced, and this is even more true for women, who continue to earn less for doing the same work as men. As a result of this wage gap, women have less to save, less to invest and, ultimately, accumulate less wealth over a lifetime. In The Pink Tax, award-winning CPA, Janine Rogan, draws from multiple studies, researched statistics, and her own experiences to shine a spotlight on the gender wage gap and the state of female wealth. The pink tax extends far beyond the insulting costs of pink branded products and extends into the very fabric of our society. By dismantling the current systems at play, Janine explores how the financial inequities between men and women are perpetuated, and how those inequities negatively affect not only women but the entire economy. From whether your lattes are really sabotaging your financial goals, to how supporting new mothers and improving childcare is for the benefit of all society, Rogan offers small- and large-scale solutions for both personal and societal change. Because it's time. Time for women to flip the narrative on how we approach financial inequality and untangle the patriarchal systems that uphold our current financial system. The Pink Tax is a financially feminist approach to closing the gender wealth gap and reaching economic equality for women through smashing the pink tax, breaking down bias, and dismantling a financial system built by men, for men.

Exploring contemporary finance via the development of stock exchanges, markets and the links with states, Roscoe mingles historical and technical detail with humorous anecdotes and lively portraits of market participants. Deftly combining research and autobiographical vignettes, he offers a cautionary tale about the drive of financial markets towards expropriation, capture and exclusion. Positioning financial markets as central devices in the organization of the global economy, he includes contemporary concerns over inequality, climate emergency and (de)colonialism and concludes by wondering, in the market's own angst-filled voice, what the future for finance might be, and how we might get there.

The Pandemic Paradox
Why most Americans' finances improved during the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression--and the policy choices that made this possible In March 2020, economic and social life across the United States came to an abrupt halt as the country tried to slow the spread of COVID-19. In the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression, twenty-two million people lost their jobs between mid-March and mid-April of 2020. And yet somehow the finances of most Americans improved during the pandemic--savings went up, debts went down, and fewer people had trouble paying their bills. In The Pandemic Paradox, economist Scott Fulford explains this seeming contradiction, describing how the pandemic reshaped the American economy. As Americans grappled with remote work, "essential" work, and closed schools, three massive pandemic relief bills, starting with the CARES Act on March 27, 2020, managed to protect many of America's most vulnerable. Fulford draws from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's "Making Ends Meet" surveys--which he helped design--to interweave macroeconomic trends in spending, saving, and debt with stories of individual Americans' economic lives during the pandemic. We meet Winona, who quit her job to take care of her children; Marvin, who retired early and worried that his savings wouldn't last; Lisa, whose expenses went up after her grown kids (and their dog) moved back home; and many others. What the statistics and the stories show, Fulford argues, is that a better, fairer, more productive economy is still possible. The success of pandemic relief policy proves that Americans' economic fragility is not an unsolvable problem. But we have to choose to solve it.
Value for Money
The Greater China Australia Dialogue on Public Administration has held annual workshops since 2011 on public administration themes of common interest to the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and Australia. This book presents and discusses a selection of papers developed from the Dialogue's fifth workshop held in late 2015 hosted by the National Taiwan University in Taipei. The theme, 'Value for Money', focused on budget and financial management reforms, including how different nations account for the relative performance of their public sectors. All governments face the challenge of scarce resources requiring budgetary management processes for identifying the resources required by and available to government, and then for allocating them and ensuring their use or deployment represents value for money. Such budgetary and financial management processes need to inform decision-making routinely and protect the integrity of the way public resources are used - with some public accountability to indicate that their uses are properly authorised and reflect the policies of legitimate government leaders. The chapters in this book explore budgeting and financial management in three very different jurisdictions: Australia, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan). These activist and at times innovative countries are keen to analyse and reflect upon each other's policy achievements and patterns of public provision. They are keen to learn more about each other as their economic and social engagement continues to deepen. They are also conscious that fundamental differences exist in terms of economic development and global strategic positioning, and levels and philosophies of political development; to an extent these differences are representative of differences amongst countries around the globe.
Islamic Banking Challenges in Indian Banks
Bank as is understood in general terms is a depositor or lender for the safekeeping of money. With the changing times banks are performing a host of other financial services like insurance, mutual funds, securities, etc. It is important to look at some definitions of banks to understand the concept of bank."An institution that provides a great variety of financial services. At their most basic, banks hold money on behalf of customers, which is payable on demand, either by appearing at the bank for a withdrawal or by writing a check to a third party. Banks use the money they hold to finance loans, which they make to businesses and individuals to pay for operations, mortgages, education expenses, and any number of things. Many banks also perform other services for a fee; for instance they offer certified checks to customers guaranteeing payment to third parties. In some countries they may provide investment and insurance services. With the exception of Zero Interest based banks, they pay interest on deposits and receive interest on their loans. Banks are regulated by the laws and central banks of their home countries; normally they must receive a charter to engage in business. Banks are usually organized as corporations.Commercial banks are mainly concerned with managing withdrawals and deposits as well as supplying short-term loans to individuals and small businesses. Consumers primarily use these banks for basic checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit and sometimes for home mortgages.

Banking on Slavery
A sobering excavation of how deeply nineteenth-century American banks were entwined with the institution of slavery. It's now widely understood that the fullest expression of nineteenth-century American capitalism was found in the structures of chattel slavery. It's also understood that almost every other institution and aspect of life then was at least entangled with-and often profited from-slavery's perpetuation. Yet as Sharon Ann Murphy shows in her powerful and unprecedented book, the centrality of enslaved labor to banking in the antebellum United States is far greater than previously thought. Banking on Slavery sheds light on precisely how the financial relationships between banks and slaveholders worked across the nineteenth-century South. Murphy argues that the rapid spread of slavery in the South during the 1820s and '30s depended significantly upon southern banks' willingness to financialize enslaved lives, with the use of enslaved individuals as loan collateral proving central to these financial relationships. She makes clear how southern banks were ready-and, in some cases, even eager-to alter time-honored banking practices to meet the needs of slaveholders. In the end, many of these banks sacrificed themselves in their efforts to stabilize the slave economy. Murphy also details how banks and slaveholders transformed enslaved lives from physical bodies into abstract capital assets. Her book provides an essential examination of how our nation's financial history is more intimately intertwined with the dehumanizing institution of slavery than scholars have previously thought.
The Richest Man In Babylon
Widely known as the bible to cultivate financial wisdom and increase personal wealth, George Clason's The Richest Man in Babylon offers timeless business advice wrapped in the guise of parables set 4,000 years ago in ancient Babylon. The book was originally published in the form of a series of pamphlets that were distributed by banks and insurance companies from 1920 to 1924. In 1926, the pamphlets were bound together and published as a book. In the book, the parables are chronicles by a fictional Babylonian called Arkad, a poor scribe who goes on to become the richest man in Babylon. Arkad's personal finance advice is divided into the "Seven Cures", which detail how a person can generated money and wealth, and "Five Laws of Gold", which talk about how an individual can protect and invest their wealth. Clason's The Richest Man in Babylon remains in print even after 90 years of the publication of its first edition, which sold over two million copies. In 1930, Clason brought out an illustrated hardback edition of the book, titled The Richest Man in Babylon and Other Stories. The book continues to appear on reading lists pertaining to business advice for offering time-tested tips on gaining and retaining prosperity.

'There exist books on specific scams. Harshad Mehta being a case in point. But I can't readily think of books that straddle a variety of scams. On that count alone, V. Pattabhi Ram and Sabyasachee Dash have produced a remarkable book, so that citizen angst and government countervailing action is better informed.' -Bibek Debroy, Economist and Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India On 24 December 2036, the price of a blue-chip stock, the National Bank of Hindustan, crashes after a leak of the forensic auditors' report. This triggers a series of conversations between Lobin Stephen Senior, one of the senior-most bankers in the country, with his two great-grandchildren. In an easy conversational style, The Great Bank Robbery: NPAs, Scams, and the Future of Regulation captures the basic functioning of commercial and public sector banks. Vast amounts of public money have vanished from banks over the last few decades, with no remedial measure having been effectively put in place. The victim invariably ends up being the lay Indian citizen. The book discusses 11 scams that have rocked the nation since Independence. Without sensationalizing the dramatic content, the book examines how the frauds took place: the strategies used by the scamsters, the regulation loopholes they used, and the lasting consequences thereof. It also discusses the role of prime stakeholders in the banking and finance sectors, such as auditors, company boards, the regulator and rating agencies. A simple but not simplified primer into the world of banking and finance, this book is an engaging and timely discussion directed at the Indian citizen.

Easy Money
A sweeping history of the American invention of modern money. Economists endlessly debate the nature of legal tender monetary systems--coins and bills issued by a government or other authority. Yet the origins of these currencies have received little attention. Dror Goldberg tells the story of modern money in North America through the Massachusetts colony during the seventeenth century. As the young settlement transitioned to self-governance and its economy grew, the need to formalize a smooth exchange emerged. Printing local money followed. Easy Money illustrates how colonists invented contemporary currency by shifting its foundation from intrinsically valuable goods--such as silver--to the taxation of the state. Goldberg traces how this structure grew into a worldwide system in which, monetarily, we are all Massachusetts. Weaving economics, law, and American history, Easy Money is a new touchstone in the story of monetary systems.

Lombard Street
Lombard Street: A Description of the Money Market book is one of the all-time classics of finance and monetary policy, and is still relied upon today by central banks world-wide for its statement of broad principles in times of financial calamity. Written in 1873 in reaction to the Bank of England's response to a financial meltdown, the collapse of a bank, which induced a panic that spread throughout the country in 1866, Lombard Street was one of the first books to describe international monetary policy in clear, easy-to-understand terms. Walter Bagehot's advice for central bankers a century and a half ago is still sage today: in times of financial panic, lend freely to solvent firms with good collateral at higher-but-fair rates--a seemingly simple principle but one that many countries failed to follow, always to their detriment, until the worldwide Great Depression of the 1930s made Bagehot's advice mainstream theory for central bankers. Eminently readable, and both useful and important today as a foundational document, Lombard Street is essential reading for anyone interested in basic monetary policy and the workings of central banks in times of crisis.

Innovation in Real Places
Winner of Balsillie Prize for Public PolicyWinner of Donner PrizeA Summer Book of 2021, Financial TimesLonglisted Financial Times and McKinsey Best Business Book of the Year A challenge to prevailing ideas about innovation and a guide to identifying the best growth strategy for your community. Across the world, cities and regions have wasted trillions of dollars on blindly copying the Silicon Valley model of growth creation. Since the early years of the information age, we've been told that economic growth derives from harnessing technological innovation. To do this, places must create good education systems, partner with local research universities, and attract innovative hi-tech firms. We have lived with this system for decades, and the result is clear: a small number of regions and cities at the top of the high-tech industry but many more fighting a losing battle to retain economic dynamism. But are there other models that don't rely on a flourishing high-tech industry? In Innovation in Real Places, Dan Breznitz argues that there are. The purveyors of the dominant ideas on innovation have a feeble understanding of the big picture on global production and innovation. They conflate innovation with invention and suffer from techno-fetishism. In their devotion to start-ups, they refuse to admit that the real obstacle to growth for most cities is the overwhelming power of the real hubs, which siphon up vast amounts of talent and money. Communities waste time, money, and energy pursuing this road to nowhere. Breznitz proposes that communities instead focus on where they fit in the four stages in the global production process. Some are at the highest end, and that is where the Clevelands, Sheffields, and Baltimores are being pushed toward. But that is bad advice. Success lies in understanding the changed structure of the global system of production and then using those insights to enable communities to recognize their own advantages, which in turn allows to them to foster surprising forms of specialized innovation. As he stresses, all localities have certain advantages relative to at least one stage of the global production process, and the trick is in recognizing it. Leaders might think the answer lies in high-tech or high-end manufacturing, but more often than not, they're wrong. Innovation in Real Places is an essential corrective to a mythology of innovation and growth that too many places have bought into in recent years. Best of all, it has the potential to prod local leaders into pursuing realistic and regionally appropriate models for growth and innovation.
