"Building the New Economy" introduces a successor to Capitalism. A system with an explicit mandate of distributed wealth and ownership that the author terms "Distributive Capitalism". Harlley takes a multi-dimensional view of the potential comparative advantages of a distributed system, covering areas as diverse as political grid-lock, macro-economic risk and economic justice, while always anchoring his arguments for "Distributive Capitalism" to the goal of human happiness and flourishing.

National of Political Economy
National System of Political Economy presents Friedrich List's theories on national economics, advocating for protectionist policies to foster industrial development within nations. List argues against the universal applicability of free trade, suggesting that while it may benefit advanced economies, it can hinder the growth of emerging nations. He emphasizes the importance of developing a nation's productive powers through strategic government intervention, particularly in the early stages of industrialization. This work offers a historical perspective on economic thought and provides valuable insights into the debates surrounding globalization, trade, and economic development. List's ideas remain relevant for understanding the complexities of international economic relations and the role of national policies in shaping economic outcomes. The Great African Society
"Only a dramatic, imaginatively crafted intervention - a massive redistribution programme managed by the private sector, far-reaching policy changes in schooling, housing and health, and better, disciplined governance - will deliver the genuine liberation South Africa's still-poor millions expected from the 1994 settlement. Without it, without the real promise of a free, meritocratic society, South Africa will flounder and fail as corruption, crime, social decay, hopelessness and anger engulf society. This is the compelling thesis of Hlumelo Biko's hard-hitting, thoughtful analysis of South Africa's past, present and future, a sobering assessment of where we stand today, and where we need to go. At once unnervingly candid and inspiring, The Great African Society demolishes the complacent optimism that underpins much soft thinking about South Africa's future and places at the service of public debate practical, achievable objectives for business, government and civil society. South Africa's challenge, the book argues, is to act now to avoid the mounting threat of revolt and decline that would devalue every political and economic achievement of the past decade-and-a-half and leave Nelson Mandela's feted rainbow nation staring decrepitude in the face. Biko, the son of two great South Africans, Steve Biko and Mamphela Ramphele, is generous in acknowledging achievements to date, but unsparing in judging the flaws and failures of the ANC-led government, of business, unions and civil society. He offers a comprehensive survey of the profound and continuing devastation visited on the country by its unjust history, and plain, rational proposals for repairing the damage. No debate from here on about the South African future can be taken seriously without weighing Biko's insights and his warnings. The Great African Society is vividly moral in its intentions, but sober and unsentimental in examining political and economic imperatives. It is guaranteed to make the reader sit up and take stock afresh."

Economic Sophisms
Including a detailed biographical annotation on Fr矇d矇ric Bastiat's life and achievements. *** Bastiat's "Economic Sophisms", translated by Dr. Patrick James Stirling, were eagerly welcomed by students of political economy who were not really familiar with French. His object in this work was, as he says, "to refute the fallacies of the Protectionist School, then predominant in France, and to clear the way for the establishment of what he maintained to be the true system of economic science, which he desired to find on a new and peculiar theory of value, afterwards fully developed by him in the Harmonies." *** This landmark series presents a curated collection of the greatest non-fiction works ever written-spanning philosophy, history, theology, science, political theory, economics, and beyond. From the ancient musings of Plato and Confucius to the revolutionary ideas of Darwin and Marx, Foundations of Thought gathers the essential texts that have shaped civilizations and challenged the boundaries of human understanding. Whether exploring the nature of justice, the origins of the cosmos, or the foundations of faith, this series serves as both a gateway to intellectual heritage and a living dialogue with the past. Ideal for students, thinkers, and seekers of wisdom, Foundations of Thought invites readers to engage deeply with the enduring ideas that continue to influence the world today.

Food Fight
Society's most basic challenge is arguably to produce and distribute enough food for its citizens. In 2023, 733 million people faced hunger and 2.3 billion were moderately or severely food insecure. Feeding a growing world population is becoming more difficult in the face of climate change, pest resistance to traditional treatments, and misguided government policies that limit how much food ends up on our plates. Policies to support biofuels, organic agriculture, local foods, and small farms and to oppose genetically modified foods all reduce food production on existing land. This leads to higher food prices, increased carbon emissions, and less natural habitat as cropland expands. Food Fight documents the challenges to adequately feeding the world in the twenty-first century and illustrates the ways in which contemporary food policies in the United States, Europe, and beyond imperil food security. Richard J. Sexton provides a window into the world of modern agriculture and food supply chains. He separates the wheat from the chaff to distinguish policies that will limit, or expand, the global food supply, and he explains how we can construct a food system that forestalls future hunger and environmental degradation.

Public Policy and Economic Theory
Originally published in 1970 this textbook on applied economics focusses on those parts of theory which have specifically made a contribution to policy problems. The book provides a coherent treatment of the subject at a particular level - the subject being the application of economic theory to government intervention in the economy. The first part deals with the techniques and size of such intervention and the accepted objectives. It also uses economic analysis to show that the goals of government policy will not be produced by a free-market mechanism and so the government is obliged to intervene in the economy once it has chosen particular policy aims. Part 2 analyses specific examples of intervention.
The Effect
The Effect: An Introduction to Research Design and Causality, Second edition is an excellent teaching text about research design, specifically concerning research that uses observational data to make a causal inference. It is separated into two halves, each with different approaches to that subject. The first half goes through the concepts of causality, with very little in the way of estimation. It introduces the concept of identification thoroughly and clearly and discusses it as a process of trying to isolate variation that has a causal interpretation. Subjects include heavy emphasis on data-generating processes and causal diagrams.Concepts are demonstrated with a heavy emphasis on graphical intuition and the question of what we do to data. When we "add a control variable" what does that actually do?The target audience is practitioners as well as undergraduate and graduate students studying causal inference in various fields such as statistics, econometrics, biostatistics, the social sciences and data science. Key Features: Extensive code examples in R, Stata, and Python Chapters on heterogeneous treatment effects, simulation and power analysis, new cutting-edge methods, and uncomfortable ignored assumptions An easy-to-read conversational tone Up-to-date coverage of methods with fast-moving literatures like difference-in-differences The second edition features a new chapter on partial identification, updated materials, methods, and writing throughout, and additional materials for help navigating the book or in using the book in teaching.
Japan and the Rise of China
This book provides a comprehensive study of Japan's evolving relationship with China since 1949, tracing the shifting dynamics from a distant relationship during the early communist era to a more cooperative phase in the late 20th century, and finally to the growing tensions of the 21st century.
The Effect
This book is about research design, specifically concerning research that uses non-experimental data to figure out whether one thing causes another. It is separated into two halves, each with different approaches to that subject. Concepts are demonstrated with a heavy emphasis on graphical intuition and the question of what we do to data.
Globalarctic
The third volume in the Global Arctic series examines the transformation of Arctic governance following the 2022 outbreak of war in Ukraine. This conflict has disrupted the post-Cold War cooperative circumpolar order, upending decades of multilateral collaborations. The book traces the Arctic's evolution from Cold War great power competition to a focus on human security and cooperation, highlighting the Arctic Council's establishment and the growth of the "Arctic family" with non-Arctic actors. It explores how climate change became a key driver for Arctic (re)engagement, opening new opportunities and challenges. The 2022 invasion of Ukraine has dramatically altered this landscape, ending the post-Cold War era of collaboration and ushering in the post-post-Cold War era, raising critical questions about regional cooperation, climate change mitigation, and global security. This book brings together diverse expert perspectives to analyze the rapidly changing geopolitical dynamics of the Arctic. It explores the tension between collaboration needs and resurgent great power competition, offering valuable insights for policymakers, scholars, and students. As global power dynamics shift and climate change threatens, understanding Arctic governance challenges becomes imperative. This book serves as an essential resource for navigating the complex Arctic political landscape and examining how new divisions are reshaping the region's future.

In Good Faith
How a society's capacity for belief forms the foundation of its success Do you struggle to find reasons to feel optimistic about the future? Are you trying to understand the creeping institutional dysfunction we see the world over? In this book, Ryan Avent explores how an unswerving confidence in systems of liberal democracy and free market capitalism--which he terms the "Modern Faith"--has left many Western countries struggling to deal with democratic backsliding and social dysfunction. Those seeking the certainty of another technocratic solution, however, are searching in the wrong place. The true foundation of our prosperity, Avent argues, is not in an ability to reason our way to better policies and institutions but rather lies in the nature and distribution of our beliefs.Drawing from economics, history, philosophy, biology, and much else besides, Avent shows that our capacity for belief is what connects us, guides our behavior moment by moment and year by year, and determines how well we cooperate in the production of social and economic complexity. Far from standing in opposition to science and reason, faith is central to the human endeavor. By understanding the nature of faith and how it forms the fabric of our society, we can better find ways to come together to tackle the global crises of rising authoritarianism and climate change that threaten us all, and find hope within one another.

Pasinetti and the Classical Keynesians
Recent economic and financial crises have exposed mainstream economics to severe criticism, bringing present research and teaching styles into question. Building on a solid and vivid tradition of economic thought, this book challenges conventional thinking in the field of economics. The authors turn to the work of Luigi Pasinetti, who proposed a list of nine methodological and theoretical ideas that characterize the Classical Keynesian School. Drawing inspiration from both Keynes and Sraffa, this school has forged a long-standing and ambitious research programme often advocated as a competing paradigm to mainstream economics. Overall, the Classical Keynesian School provides a comprehensive analytical framework into which most non-mainstream schools of thought can be integrated. In this collection, a group of leading scholars critically assess the nine main ideas that, in Pasinetti's view, characterize the Classical-Keynesian approach, evaluating their relevance for both the history of economics and for present economic research.

Rethinking Macroeconomics with Endogenous Market Structure
The birth and death of firms is one of the main features of the business cycle. Yet mainstream DGSE macroeconomic models mostly ignore this phenomenon, thereby excluding any potential impact of economic policy on the probability of the birth and death of firms. Those DGSE models that do allow for this phenomenon do so at the cost of drastic simplifications, which effectively rule out causal links between the strategic interaction of industrial firms and the macroeconomy. This innovative new book develops a bottom-up, agent-based framework that shows how strategic interactions at the level of oligopolistic firms, and even at the level of individuals, affect entire industrial sectors and the equilibrium of the macroeconomy. It will appeal to academic researchers and graduate students working in computational economics, agent-based modelling and econophysics, as well as mainstream economists interested in learning more about alternatives to DGSE models in macroeconomics.

How Can We Create a Free, Just, and Sustainable World?
"How can we create a free, just, and sustainable world?" This is the question Convoco is addressing in its 20th anniversary year. The topic combines thoughts about the common good, freedom, and equality, as well as strategic considerations. What are the factors that constitute a viable world? Peace, a healthy environment, and technology that serves humanity-for Convoco, these three themes form the basis of a free, just, and sustainable world. But how can such a world be created? What is the future of democracy? What are the security challenges facing Europe? How can we reconcile economic development with climate protection? These and other questions are at the heart of this volume. It is essential that society live according to the laws set by nature. The role of science is to demonstrate these laws.
