The World Under Capitalism
Branko Milanovic is best known as one of the world's leading experts on global inequality. But he is also an unusually wide-ranging and penetrating commentator on subjects across economics and beyond, in politics, history, and culture. This book brings together his most searching, provocative, and entertaining articles of recent years, providing an abundance of vital insights into the evolution and dynamics of the world under capitalism. The volume features important ideas about the struggle to achieve a more equal and prosperous world against not only the predictable forces of deregulation and distraction but new ideas about shrinking the economy to protect the environment. Further from Milanovic's speciality, readers will find an extraordinary array of reflections on subjects including migration, globalization, the politics and economics of Russia and China, the crisis of liberal democracy, economic and literary history, and the intellectual giants of economics. The pieces are united by Milanovic's distinctive voice - humane, wry, and realistic - and by remarkable erudition worn lightly whether the topic is the fall of Constantinople, Jane Austen, or the mores of contemporary soccer. No one can fail to learn from the book, while the sparkling prose, unexpected observations, and sheer importance of the subjects at hand make it a compelling read from start to finish. Now available as an audiobook.

The Doom Loop
The acclaimed economist and author of The Future of Money argues that the forces meant to stabilize the world's economy are in fact driving global instability "An excellent survey of some of the most important issues in international affairs today." --Financial Times Global economic power is shifting, liberal market-oriented democracies face growing domestic turmoil, and international trade and financial integration is crumbling. How did we get here? In The Doom Loop, economist Eswar Prasad argues that the very forces that we long believed could stabilize the world order are fueling its destabilization. Rather than promoting shared prosperity, globalization has instead deepened economic inequality, stoked political backlash, and prompted escalating trade wars. Institutions like the International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization, founded to foster international cooperation, have failed to adapt to twenty-first-century realities. The rise of "middle power" countries like India, Brazil, and Indonesia once suggested a stable multipolar future, but today, such nations are increasingly forced to pick sides as the United States and China fight for global dominance. Prasad argues that we are caught in a destructive feedback loop between economics, domestic politics, and geopolitics. The Doom Loop offers a clear-eyed and bracing account of a world spiraling into disorder, and makes it clear that old solutions cannot pull us out--we need radically new solutions to solve the world's problems.
Poverty in Latin America
This Element derives subjective poverty lines for seven Latin American countries based on a Minimum Income Question included in household expenditure surveys. It compares poverty incidence under the subjective and objective approach, finding subjective poverty is larger than objective for all countries. People identified as poor are generally poor by both measures or only subjective poor, although patterns of overlapping differ between countries. It explores the factors associated to considering oneself as poor - being subjectively poor- when the per capita household income is higher than the objective poverty line. Generally, unemployment and informality are associated with higher probability of subjective poverty. Other factors not directly involving income but reflecting high economic security also tend to reduce the probability of feeling poor. Finally, the welfare stigma effect does not seem to hold, at least in terms of subjective poverty. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Prosperity Unearthed
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, rich in hydrocarbons, has experienced both prosperity and challenges due to its vast oil and gas reserves. The region holds more than half of the world's oil reserves and 40 percent of its gas reserves. While these resources have propelled some countries to high-income status and supported regional economic growth through jobs, remittances, and investments, they have also been associated with economic instability and overreliance on a narrow range of commodity exports, as well as resource contests and conflict. "Prosperity Unearthed: Wealth-Sharing Mechanisms for Peace and Equitable Growth in the Middle East and North Africa" delves into the varying development outcomes and wealth-sharing practices in the MENA region and proposes strategies for fostering inclusive prosperity and peace. The book examines wealth sharing through three lenses: time, space, and fragility and conflict. It assesses how policymakers have managed resource distribution over time (saving versus spending) and across geographical areas (concentrating versus distributing). The findings highlight that deviations from best practices in these dimensions have contributed to the region's unmet development potential, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected areas. Key recommendations include decoupling fiscal spending from volatile hydrocarbon revenues to ensure macroeconomic stability and long-term sustainability, implementing transparent and accountable governance mechanisms, and adopting rules-based policies for equitable resource distribution. The book emphasizes the importance of inclusive economic policies, robust transparency arrangements, and strong institutions in achieving sustainable development. By leveraging hydrocarbon resources effectively, MENA countries can build sustainable, inclusive prosperity. The book underscores the need for strong fiscal management, regional cooperation, transparent governance, and inclusive growth strategies to transform resource wealth into improved physical infrastructure, human capital, and economic institutions. These efforts are crucial for fostering peace, stability, and equitable growth in the region. This book was prepared by a multidisciplinary team from the Prosperity Department of the World Bank's Middle East and North Africa Region. Its findings will be of particular interest to policymakers, as well as researchers and development practitioners.

Global Perspectives on Financial Inclusion
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) place a strong emphasis on empowering women and reducing poverty. To achieve these goals effectively, it is essential to implement strategic initiatives that connect policy planning with practical solutions. Microfinance has played a significant role in enabling the financial inclusion of women through collective and joint liability models. While these collective initiatives have existed worldwide in various forms, there remains a noticeable lack of literature on collectives and joint liability initiatives supporting semi-formal finance, especially in emerging economies. In this much needed work, Nishi Malhotra offers valuable insights into microfinance initiatives through in-depth case studies across Africa, Europe, and Asia. She examines the shift in emerging economies towards achieving the SDGs, focusing on poverty reduction and women's empowerment. Her work highlights the transition from traditional donor-driven models to sustainable finance frameworks, emphasizing the importance of microfinance and social finance. By exploring financial intermediation and bottom-up strategies like collective endeavours and savings groups, Malhotra demonstrates how these approaches can advance the SDGs. Combining expert interviews with grounded theory analysis, her research provides a nuanced understanding of the intersection between sustainable finance and poverty alleviation, offering insights into policy initiatives and the operational dynamics of microfinance mechanisms. By presenting a comprehensive analysis of microfinance initiatives and their impact on poverty reduction, especially concerning women's financial inclusion, Global Perspectives on Financial Inclusion: Case Studies in Microfinance and Women's Empowerment serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners committed to advancing financial inclusion and achieving the UN SDGs.

Economy, Society, and Education
The global COVID-19 pandemic triggered severe economic shocks that reverberated across the world, significantly affecting the lives and livelihoods of millions. Economies were brought to a standstill, leading to unprecedented downturns that disrupted growth trajectories and pushed many into poverty. While the magnitude and nature of these impacts varied from country to country, the overall consequences were both immediate and far-reaching. The crisis highlighted the importance of understanding macroeconomic indicators and social dynamics before, during, and after the pandemic to develop informed strategies for economic recovery and resilience.Recognizing the need for deeper insights into these evolving challenges, CamEd Business School convened a series of annual international research symposiums. These forums provided a platform for scholars, researchers, and policymakers to share data-driven insights, critically examine the economic and social impacts of the pandemic, and explore innovative policy solutions. The research-based discussion papers presented at these symposiums formed the foundation of this book. Through rigorous analysis, they offer valuable perspectives on navigating post-pandemic recovery, with a focus on evidence-based decision-making and long-term resilience. This compilation aims to serve as both a reflection of the pandemic's wide-ranging effects and a guide for rebuilding stronger, more inclusive economies in the years ahead.
The Origins of Inequality
Joseph E. Stiglitz has had a remarkable career. He is a brilliant academic, capped by sharing the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics and the Nobel Peace Prize, and honorary degrees from Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford and more than fifty other universities, and elected not only to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Letters but the Royal Society and the British Academy; a public servant, who served as Chair of President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisors and Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank, headed international commissions for the UN and France, and was awarded the French Legion of Honor and Australia's Sydney Peace Prize; a public intellectual whose numerous books on vital topics have been best sellers. What brought him to economics were his concerns about the inequality and discrimination he saw growing up. Wanting to understand what drives it and what can be done about it has been his lifelong passion. This book gathers together and extends to new frontiers this lifelong work, drawing upon the challenges and insights of each of these phases of his career. In a still very widely cited paper written fifty years ago, Stiglitz set forth the fundamental framework for analyzing intergenerational transfer of wealth and advantage, which plays a central role in persistent inequality. That and subsequent work, developed most fully here for the first time, described today's inequality as a result of centrifugal forces increasing inequality and centripetal forces reducing it. In recent decades, the centrifugal forces have strengthened, the centripetal forces weakened. His general theory provides a framework for understanding the marked growth in inequality in recent decades, and for devising policies to reduce it. A central message is that ever-increasing inequality is not inevitable. Inequality is, in a fundamental sense, a choice. Stiglitz explains that inequality does not largely arise from differences in savings rates between capitalists and others, though that may play a role (as Piketty, Marx, and Kaldor suggest); but rather, it originates importantly from the rules of the game, which have weakened the bargaining power of workers as they have increased the market power of corporations. He also explains how monetary authorities have contributed to increasing wealth inequality, and how, unless something is done about it, likely changes in technology such as AI and robotization will make matters worse. He describes policies that can simultaneously reduce inequality and improve economic performance.
Sustainable Growth and Green Policies
Sustainable Growth and Green Policies: Navigating Energy and Environmental Challenges explores the intersection of green finance, energy transition, and sustainable policies, offering innovative solutions to today's environmental and economic challenges. The book is divided into two sections: Green Policies for Sustainable Growth and Carbon Neutrality and Green Finance and Economic Recovery, featuring empirical research, innovative frameworks, and policy recommendations. The first section focuses on strategies for achieving carbon neutrality and promoting green growth across various economic contexts. Topics include the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in ASEAN's decarbonization, the relationship between financial development and greenhouse gas mitigation in BRICS economies, and behavioral factors influencing private investment in renewable energy. It also explores China's carbon market design and the impact of socioeconomic progress on environmental sustainability. The second section examines the role of green finance in economic recovery, particularly in the post-COVID-19 era. It assesses the interconnectedness of clean and conventional energy markets, the implications of renewable energy financing in Asia, and the effects of green finance on carbon intensity in OECD countries. Additionally, it explores fiscal policies for greening China's economy and macroeconomic frameworks for achieving sustainable development in the EU.
Asian Mitigation
Asian countries play a significant role in emission mitigation, which is one of the central pillars of the global effort to meet the 1.5簞C and 2簞C climate goals pledged in the Paris Agreement. This book contains a series of essays that explore how Asian territories are contributing to substantial emission reductions by presenting in-depth insights and fresh perspectives on optimal mitigation actions, strategies, and policies in Asian economies. A set of quantitative models, such as CGE models, DSGE models, LEAP models, LCA approaches, and input-output methods are used and developed to examine roles of mitigation at different scales, including climate governance on regional levels, distributional effects at the sectoral level, and policy effectiveness assessment on the firm level. The studies included in the book make novel contributions to the existing literature about the implementation of the Paris Agreement goals, and policy making at the regional scale (in both Asian and non-Asian economies).
Water and Development
From the early twentieth century, a big part of the world--the arid tropics--began extracting, storing, and recycling vast quantities of water to sustain population growth and economic development. These regions worked on water to deal with seasonality, or the rotation between extreme aridity for a part of the year and a concentrated period of rain. The idea of storing water in the wet season to use it in the dry season was not a new one in this geography. Indeed, it was an intrinsic part of ancient culture, statecraft, and technology. Most ancient projects, however, were local and small in scale. The capability of water extraction on a scale large enough to transform whole regions and create new cities improved in the early twentieth century. The process gave rise to a sharp break in the long-term population and economic growth pattern from the mid-twentieth century. The world knows that rapid economic growth must take a toll on the environment. The tropics were no exception. However, the economic emergence of the arid tropics reinforces the message differently from how climate activists imagine. The geography of the arid tropics makes transforming landscapes to extract and recycle large quantities of water damaging to the environment and disputatious. The book is about that troubled history of economic emergence.
