Why Populism?
The rise to power of populists like Donald Trump is usually attributed to the shifting values and policy preferences of voters-the demand side. Why Populism shifts the public debate on populism and examines the other half of the equation-the supply side. Kenny argues that to understand the rise of populism is to understand the cost of different strategies for winning and keeping power. For the aspiring leader, populism-appealing directly to the people through mass communication-can be a quicker, cheaper, and more effective strategy than working through a political party. Probing the long history of populism in the West from its Ancient Greek roots to the present, this highly readable book shows that the 'economic laws of populism are constant.' 'Forget ideology. Forget resentment. Forget racism or sexism.' Populism, the author writes, is the result of a hidden strategic calculus.

The Great African Society
"Only a dramatic, imaginatively crafted intervention - a massive redistribution programme managed by the private sector, far-reaching policy changes in schooling, housing and health, and better, disciplined governance - will deliver the genuine liberation South Africa's still-poor millions expected from the 1994 settlement. Without it, without the real promise of a free, meritocratic society, South Africa will flounder and fail as corruption, crime, social decay, hopelessness and anger engulf society. This is the compelling thesis of Hlumelo Biko's hard-hitting, thoughtful analysis of South Africa's past, present and future, a sobering assessment of where we stand today, and where we need to go. At once unnervingly candid and inspiring, The Great African Society demolishes the complacent optimism that underpins much soft thinking about South Africa's future and places at the service of public debate practical, achievable objectives for business, government and civil society. South Africa's challenge, the book argues, is to act now to avoid the mounting threat of revolt and decline that would devalue every political and economic achievement of the past decade-and-a-half and leave Nelson Mandela's feted rainbow nation staring decrepitude in the face. Biko, the son of two great South Africans, Steve Biko and Mamphela Ramphele, is generous in acknowledging achievements to date, but unsparing in judging the flaws and failures of the ANC-led government, of business, unions and civil society. He offers a comprehensive survey of the profound and continuing devastation visited on the country by its unjust history, and plain, rational proposals for repairing the damage. No debate from here on about the South African future can be taken seriously without weighing Biko's insights and his warnings. The Great African Society is vividly moral in its intentions, but sober and unsentimental in examining political and economic imperatives. It is guaranteed to make the reader sit up and take stock afresh."

Food Fight
Society's most basic challenge is arguably to produce and distribute enough food for its citizens. In 2023, 733 million people faced hunger and 2.3 billion were moderately or severely food insecure. Feeding a growing world population is becoming more difficult in the face of climate change, pest resistance to traditional treatments, and misguided government policies that limit how much food ends up on our plates. Policies to support biofuels, organic agriculture, local foods, and small farms and to oppose genetically modified foods all reduce food production on existing land. This leads to higher food prices, increased carbon emissions, and less natural habitat as cropland expands. Food Fight documents the challenges to adequately feeding the world in the twenty-first century and illustrates the ways in which contemporary food policies in the United States, Europe, and beyond imperil food security. Richard J. Sexton provides a window into the world of modern agriculture and food supply chains. He separates the wheat from the chaff to distinguish policies that will limit, or expand, the global food supply, and he explains how we can construct a food system that forestalls future hunger and environmental degradation.

Economic Sophisms
Including a detailed biographical annotation on Fr矇d矇ric Bastiat's life and achievements. *** Bastiat's "Economic Sophisms", translated by Dr. Patrick James Stirling, were eagerly welcomed by students of political economy who were not really familiar with French. His object in this work was, as he says, "to refute the fallacies of the Protectionist School, then predominant in France, and to clear the way for the establishment of what he maintained to be the true system of economic science, which he desired to find on a new and peculiar theory of value, afterwards fully developed by him in the Harmonies." *** This landmark series presents a curated collection of the greatest non-fiction works ever written-spanning philosophy, history, theology, science, political theory, economics, and beyond. From the ancient musings of Plato and Confucius to the revolutionary ideas of Darwin and Marx, Foundations of Thought gathers the essential texts that have shaped civilizations and challenged the boundaries of human understanding. Whether exploring the nature of justice, the origins of the cosmos, or the foundations of faith, this series serves as both a gateway to intellectual heritage and a living dialogue with the past. Ideal for students, thinkers, and seekers of wisdom, Foundations of Thought invites readers to engage deeply with the enduring ideas that continue to influence the world today.

Public Policy and Economic Theory
Originally published in 1970 this textbook on applied economics focusses on those parts of theory which have specifically made a contribution to policy problems. The book provides a coherent treatment of the subject at a particular level - the subject being the application of economic theory to government intervention in the economy. The first part deals with the techniques and size of such intervention and the accepted objectives. It also uses economic analysis to show that the goals of government policy will not be produced by a free-market mechanism and so the government is obliged to intervene in the economy once it has chosen particular policy aims. Part 2 analyses specific examples of intervention.

Globalarctic
The third volume in the Global Arctic series examines the transformation of Arctic governance following the 2022 outbreak of war in Ukraine. This conflict has disrupted the post-Cold War cooperative circumpolar order, upending decades of multilateral collaborations. The book traces the Arctic's evolution from Cold War great power competition to a focus on human security and cooperation, highlighting the Arctic Council's establishment and the growth of the "Arctic family" with non-Arctic actors. It explores how climate change became a key driver for Arctic (re)engagement, opening new opportunities and challenges. The 2022 invasion of Ukraine has dramatically altered this landscape, ending the post-Cold War era of collaboration and ushering in the post-post-Cold War era, raising critical questions about regional cooperation, climate change mitigation, and global security. This book brings together diverse expert perspectives to analyze the rapidly changing geopolitical dynamics of the Arctic. It explores the tension between collaboration needs and resurgent great power competition, offering valuable insights for policymakers, scholars, and students. As global power dynamics shift and climate change threatens, understanding Arctic governance challenges becomes imperative. This book serves as an essential resource for navigating the complex Arctic political landscape and examining how new divisions are reshaping the region's future.
