The Constitution of Political Economy
The two dominant conceptions of political economy are based on either reducing political decisions to rational-choice reasoning or, conversely, reducing economic structures and phenomena to the realm of politics. In this book, Adrian Pabst and Roberto Scazzieri contend that neither conception is convincing and argue for a fundamental rethinking of political economy. Developing a new approach at the interface of economic theory and political thought, the book shows that political economy covers a plurality of dimensions, which reflect internal hierarchies and multiple relationships within the economic and political sphere. The Constitution of Political Economy presents a new, richer conception of political economy that draws on a range of thinkers from the history of political economy, recognising the complex embedding of the economy and the polity in society. Effective policy-making has to reflect this embedding and rests on the interdependence between local, national, and international actors to address multiple systemic crises.
Institutional Diversity and the Economic Calculation Debate
This Element brings together the problems of economic calculation, institutional diversity, and institutional feasibility, arguing that these themes are deeply interconnected and mutually reinforcing. Building on recent developments in institutional theory, political economy, social philosophy, and logical analysis, the Element revisits the classic debates surrounding alternative economic and governance systems. The discussion is organized around three core elements: (1) an overview of recent developments in institutional theory and social philosophy, that driven by technological advances have revitalized debates on alternative economic and governance systems; (2) a reexamination of the economic calculation debate, tracing its evolution from Austrian economics to a broader theoretical synthesis incorporating institutional political economy and conflict theory; and (3) a discussion of the formal, logical, and philosophical foundations for thinking about feasibility and realizability, offering analytical tools for evaluating the plausibility of institutional alternatives within specific historical and social contexts.
A New Stage of Civilization
For centuries, human "civilisation" has struggled with hatred, conflict, and war since the first people tried to privately own property and protect their resources. The social and economic pressures that "civilisation" has created have placed increasing strain on the institution of private ownership, which is showing signs that it must be replaced by something more modern. To explore the next development stage for society, we must consider how the old paradigms have begun to show their limitations, and what may replace them. Cao interprets the culture, politics, economics, and the environmental problems that society faces from the perspective of a scholar, exploring potential solutions to the current global political dilemmas and providing intellectual support for a smooth transition of society to the next stage of civilisation. This stage draws on the great harmony proposed by Confucius, by taking steps to eliminate warfare and other forms of conflict and striving to achieve a more harmonious coexistence for everyone. Cao proposes a new perspective for global governance and encourage readers to work to improve the evolution of civilisation. A New Stage of Civilization: Striving for the Great Harmony will appeal to researchers in a range of fields, including economics, culture, history, politics and sustainability.

Real World Economics
The starting point of this book is that economics is an applied science: a tool to understand the real-world economy and a guide for economic policy. In contrast to the unrealistic and artificial models of neoclassical economics, the book argues that the point of departure for economic theory should be the real world with realistic assumptions being made. The book explores the theoretical underpinnings of this real-world economics including the concepts of similarity (the relationship between economic models and real-world phenomena), evolution (economic change is a historical process in which recurrent patterns of growth, maturation, and decline exist), and uncertainty (the absence of knowledge of the full set of circumstances faced and the probabilities associated with them). Adopting a real-world approach also means accepting that human beings are cognitively constrained. They do not optimize, they satisfy and, thus, a real-world economic theory should incorporate bounded rationality. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the economy, including readers from economics and across the social sciences. In this respect, it also includes some reflections on the failure of Third Way ideas to deliver on their promises. Having been incapable of changing the course impressed on the economy by the neoliberal experiment, that failure paved the way for a resurgence of nationalism, populism, and alternatives to liberal democracy, subjects analyzed in the last section of the volume.

Why is Economics not an Evolutionary Science?
Thorstein Veblen, a notorious economist from the late 19th century, reveals how stuck western civilization has been when it comes to the issue of economic development, and whether economics has anything to do with human development. Veblen's Why Is Economics Not an Evolutionary Science by Veblen follows the late 19th century tradition, which obviously predates social media drama, of utilizing academic, journalistic and printed writing as a vehicle for public debates and vitriol. He was an insider from the academic world of economics that showed that the foundations of the principles of this field, "monetary theory," are quite pathetic. Especially when compared to natural sciences.Bilingual book, Portuguese/English. 11x18cm, 124 pages.

Oskar Lange
This book examines the academic life of Oskar Lange and his contribution to economics. It charts the development of his ideas across his working life and reflects on how the events of this period shaped his view of economics. His early engagement with European Marxism during the 1920s is outlined, as well as the ways that the 1929 economic crash encouraged Lange to evaluate the social dimension of economics and consider the economic underpinnings of a socialist planned economy. Lange's engagement with debates surrounding the theory of production, capital, the theory of interest, welfare economics, and general equilibrium during the 1930s and 1940s are outlined and provide insight into how Lange viewed the key economic debates of the day. The legacy of Lange, not just within socialist economics, but within the discipline more generally, is discussed to reflect upon his place within the Marxist tradition and his relevance within modern economics. This book offers unique insight into the work and legacy of Oskar Lange. It will be of interest to students and researchers working within the history of economic thought and the political economy.
American Economists and the Greek Economy, 1947-62

Collaboration between Greek, American, and British policymakers, economists, politicians, and administrators in providing humanitarian relief, economic rehabilitation and monetary order is highlighted. By examining the specific economic policies and how they were articulated, a nuanced view of policy making is presented that provides insight into policies that were shaped by both New Deal idealism and post-war realism. This book offers unique insights into the post-war reconstruction of Greece and the exchange of ideas between American and Greek economists. It will be of interest to students and researchers working within economic policy issues, international political economy and the history of economic thought.
The Economics of Ideologies
Many of the major international and intrastate crises and conflicts, but also the threat to democratic principles, are driven by belief systems and ideologies. They fuel political polarization, which is particularly evident in the battleground of social media. Nevertheless, we hardly pay attention to ideologies, their narratives, functions and organizations in economic theory today. Ideologies as "non-rational beliefs" seem incompatible with rationality in economic models. Therefore, the book examines the role of ideologies and belief systems in individual decision-making behavior from an economic and rational perspective. Due to the fact that people have incomplete information, belief systems and ideologies fulfill a number of important functions. While ideologies themselves serve psychological needs, they are used as a cognitive framework for rational decision-making once they have been adopted through a Bayesian learning process. They influence decisions in a wide range of areas, from consumption and work to politics. This is where the role of ideological organizations becomes important, because they determine the ideological direction of the narratives and their dissemination. Thus, ideologies give a normative direction, for better or for worse. The "quality" of ideological leadership can be evaluated normatively on the basis of principles such as individual sovereignty and human dignity. A democratic discourse requires an information and communication system that enables an evaluation of precisely these ideologies, free from resource and information power.
The Legacy of Janos Kornai
This book examines the intellectual legacy of economist Janos Kornai and explores his unique contribution to economics. It addresses the key themes within Kornai's work and shows how his ideas relate to the leading figures within economics. After highlighting the influence of Marx and Hayek on Kornai, his major contribution to comparative economics and analysis of capitalist and socialist economic systems is examined. How they fed into his conceptualization of hard and soft budget constraints and complemented his work on economic theory, in particular debates around Walrasian and Marshallian equilibrium theory, is also discussed. This book offers insight into the work of Janos Kornai and his impact upon economics. It will be of relevant to students and researchers interested in the history of economic thought and comparative economics.
An Introduction to Ergodicity Economics
This textbook introduces ergodicity economics (EE), placing the ergodicity question at the centre of economic decision-making: does expected value accurately represent what happens over time? Aimed at upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, and practitioners, this text challenges traditional models that rely on expected values without fully accounting for time as it affects real-life decisions. EE reveals that expected values match time averages only under specific conditions. When these conditions don't hold, we discover alternative concepts of rationality and new insights into risk and decision-making. This book provides essential mathematical tools and develops one core EE concept in depth: behavioural protocols that maximise long-term wealth growth. The result is a powerful framework with applications in individual decision-making, cooperation, insurance, economic inequality, and financial markets. Designed for a one-semester course, the book equips readers to contribute to the development of EE and apply its principles in advancing robust and equitable economic systems.
The Entrepreneur in the History of Political Economy
Modern economic theory has marginalised the figure of the entrepreneur, despite their significance in economic activity. This book addresses the role of the entrepreneur in the economic thought of the 18th and early 19th centuries, filling a gap in the historiography of economics.
Free and Equal
Imagine: You are designing a society, but you don't know who you'll be within it--rich or poor, man or woman, gay or straight. What would you want that society to look like? This is the revolutionary thought experiment proposed by the twentieth century's greatest political philosopher, John Rawls. As economist and philosopher Daniel Chandler argues in this hugely ambitious and exhilarating manifesto, it is by rediscovering Rawls that we can find a way out of the escalating crises that are devastating our world today."A vigorous case for adopting the liberal political framework laid out by John Rawls. . . . Chandler is a lucid and elegant writer, and there's an earnest sense of excitement propelling his argument -- a belief that Rawls's framework for thinking through political issues offers a humane way out of the most intractable disputes."--The New York Times Book Review "Intellectually rigorous and full of hope."--Zadie Smith, bestselling author of White Teeth and The Fraud - "A beautifully written and compelling argument that Rawlsian political philosophy can heal our broken societies."--Sir Angus Deaton, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics Taking Rawls's humane and egalitarian liberalism as his starting point, Chandler builds a powerful case for a new progressive agenda that would fundamentally reshape our societies for the better. He shows how we can protect free speech and transcend the culture wars; get money out of politics; and create an economy where everyone has the chance to fulfil their potential, where prosperity is widely shared, and which operates within the limits of our finite planet. This is a book brimming with hope and possibility--a galvanizing alternative to the cynicism that pervades our politics. Free and Equal has the potential to offer a touchstone for a modern, egalitarian liberalism for many years to come, cementing Rawls's place in political discourse, and firmly establishing Chandler as a vital new voice for our time.
Progress Through Regression
The Cobb-Douglas regression, a statistical technique developed to estimate what economists called a 'production function', was introduced in the late 1920s. For several years, only economist Paul Douglas and a few collaborators used the technique, while vigorously defending it against numerous critics. By the 1950s, however, several economists beyond Douglas's circle were using the technique, and by the 1970s, Douglas's regression, and more sophisticated procedures inspired by it, had become standard parts of the empirical economist's toolkit. This volume is the story of the Cobb-Douglas regression from its introduction to its acceptance as general-purpose research tool. The story intersects with the histories of several important empirical research programs in twentieth century economics, and vividly portrays the challenges of empirical economic research during that era. Fundamentally, this work represents a case study of how a controversial, innovative research tool comes to be widely accepted by a community of scholars.

Problem Solving in Economics
This book reinforces an understanding of Economics by showing how basic mathematics is used to construct models of the economy. By taking wide-ranging examples drawn for virtually all areas of economics, it shows how model-building is an indispensable aid to understanding economics. The mathematical techniques used in the book are fairly rudimentary - optimisation methods and equation-solving are the primary tools used. A brief explanation of constrained optimisation using Lagrange multipliers is provided. Throughout, the emphasis is on how these techniques are fruitfully deployed in constructing economic models and solving economic problems. It bridges the gap between mathematical analysis and economic logic. For readers, it builds confidence in constructing their own models for purposes of analysis. The book is well-suited for self-study.
