This monograph presents a comprehensive overview of a Landscape Architecture career spanning more than four decades: the life's work of John L. Wong. The featured works were created in collaboration across diverse cultures and countries, employing a vast range of concepts and exploring the whole spectrum of possibilities, from crafting small gardens to planning large-scale neighborhoods, towns and new communities. John L. Wong's prolific body of work is global with focal points in North America, the Middle East, and Asia, especially Japan, Korea and China. In addition to the wide array of project types and locations, a notable portfolio highlight is his long-term design collaboration with Stanford University, which continues to evolve and have a number of far-ranging impacts. More than 150 campus improvement projects at Stanford University (which include campus connections, open space systems, and public realm and site-specific uses) make up this large-scale design work which both reclaims Leland Stanford and Frederick Law Olmsted's 100-year-old vision while also building on that legacy to create a beautiful, resilient campus environment that facilitates learning in the 21st century. Another groundbreaking, in every sense of the word, keystone of this body of work are the groundscape designs for a number of high rises which include 12 of the 100 tallest buildings in the world. Staffordshire

Autonomous Urbanism
Automated vehicles (AVs) are beginning to appear on our roads. Their arrival represents the next disruptive technological innovation to our mobility systems. In a moment in which the contemporary conversation around driverless technology largely neglects its longer-term spatial implications, this book argues that AVs offer a major opportunity to rethink the design and evolution of our city's built environments--with profound implications on urban life, infrastructure, and form since automobiles replaced horse-powered travel and changed the design of cities in the prior century. Driverless vehicles also carry with them however, the distinct risk to reinforce many of the negative externalities brought by 20th-century automobile-based urbanism including urban sprawl, mono-functional mobility infrastructures, traffic congestion, and environmental degradation. Instead, this book proposes a vision for our cities in which AVs have been used to spur a mobility paradigm shift from private automobile use towards automated mass transit and mobility as a service--using the city of Los Angeles as a testbed. To take up these charges, this book is structured through two companion volumes: one that deploys the unique format of a graphic novel to depict a narrative experience of this future city through the eyes of the everyday public, and one that lays the framework for that speculative future to potentially occur, grounding it in our recent urban mobility history, transportation policies, and typological spatial implications at multiple scales. In envisioning this potential urban future and delineating the foundational design and policy steps towards achieving it, this book contends that there is hope in transitioning cities from the Autopias of today, to the Transitopias of tomorrow. The Role of the Railroad in Shaping the Territory of Barra Mansa-RJ
This work is the result of research that began as part of a Master's Degree project at the Fluminense Federal University, which set out to study the city of Barra Mansa in its territorial configuration. In order to do this, its origins in the occupation of the Para穩ba Fluminense Valley were researched. The first penetrations and roads gave Barra Mansa its centrality. We sought to identify its economic cycles, from the first farms to industrialization, outlining its history and occupation, highlighting the importance of this point of convergence of roads and also of political and economic interests. We tried to understand the rapid and disorderly occupation induced by industrialization. We studied the importance of the convergence of the unique roads and then the railways that provided the conditions for industrialization and its consequences and marked its territory. The main concern of this work was to highlight and study the importance of railroad and industrial development in the process of occupation and territorial articulation of the Sul Fluminense region, especially Barra Mansa.

Tuning Architecture with Humans
Through thousands of years of evolution, features of the natural environment helped to mold human behavior. As social beings, early humans also found resonance with each other in relation to their surroundings, and even developed emotional templates for certain situations, such as climbing a hill. These in turn lead to gestures and spoken language. Neuroscience has shed light on these mechanisms and led to discoveries about how early architecture contributed to human cognitive development. A significant shift occurred when natural elements, such as hills and trees, became influences on constructed shelters and monuments. This book clarifies how the beginnings of architecture were coupled with kinematic patterns formerly associated with natural settings. Without such patterns we would not have the full range of Embodied, Extended, Enacted or Embedded Cognition--to use contemporary terms. Today's alienating-built environment, fueled by technology, contains urban areas in both new and existing cities that have denied the nature of human behavior as it evolved to sustain social and cultural life. Such conditions hastened the fossil fuel crisis and climate change, among other problems. Tuning Architecture with Humans offers new ways of understanding the nature of our crises, and shows how the human sciences can contribute to more human-centered approaches to architecture, urbanism, and landscape design.

The Earth That Modernism Built
An intellectual history of architectural modernism for an age of rising global inequality and environmental crisis.The Earth That Modernism Built traces the rise of planetary design to an imperialist discourse about the influence of the earthly environment on humanity. Kenny Cupers argues that to understand how the earth became an object of design, we need to radically shift the terms of analysis. Rather than describing how new design ideas and practices traveled and transformed people and places across the globe, this book interrogates the politics of life and earth underpinning this process. It demonstrates how approaches to modern housing, landscape design, and infrastructure planning are indebted to an understanding of planetary and human ecology fueled by settler colonialism and imperial ambition. Cupers draws from both canonical and unknown sources and archives in Germany, Namibia, and Poland to situate Wilhelmine and Weimar design projects in an expansive discourse about the relationship between soil, settlement, and race. This reframing reveals connections between colonial officials planning agricultural hinterlands, garden designers proselytizing geopolitical theory, soil researchers turning to folklore, and Bauhaus architects designing modern communities according to functionalist principles. Ultimately, The Earth That Modernism Built shows how the conviction that we can design our way out of environmental crisis is bound to exploitative and divisive ways of inhabiting the earth.

Spaces for madness
Psychiatric institutions in Brazil were founded as a result of a process of authoritarian urban regulation, which rounded up countless people in order to restore them to social life in accordance with the hygienist and eugenic policies of the 20th century. Psychiatric hospitals were designed to isolate, control and monitor their inmates, where mistreatment was constant and deaths were frequent. The situation was only reversed with the implementation of the Psychiatric Reform, which granted citizenship to the mentally disabled and opened the doors of the asylum. This process still has the delicate role of dealing with the hostility present in the population, which regards cognitive disorders as something dangerous or incapable. Rethinking the planning of therapeutic environments in a way that dismantles the archetype of the psychiatric clinic is an example of how the study of this scenario in Architecture and Urbanism is important for deconstructing paradigms that link madness. Therefore, the work will use the Minas Gerais State Hospital Foundation (FHEMIG) as a case study, the first psychiatric hospital founded in Minas Gerais, located in the city of Barbacena.

As a planned community, Indianapolis boasted finished frame and brick buildings from its beginning. Gasholders

Challenges in a Colonial County is the sequel to the historical novel Liaisons - Life in a Colonial County. As such, Challenges begins in 1876 where Liaisons ended and contextualises authentic and fictitious developments, up until 1889 in Alexandra County on the Natal South Coast.Like Liaisons, Challenges is a critical fabulation in that it inserts credible experiences in the gaps and silences of the historical record. Those gaps and silences involve tragedy, drama, love, predatory capitalism, controversy involving indentured Indian labour, reformist attempts to moderate social conventions, racial prejudice, obduracy of the colonial government towards infrastructure development and politics.To avoid any misunderstanding, the interaction of the authentic characters with those around which the plot revolves is contrived. Casa Wabi Revised Edition
Casa Wabi, a nonprofit arts center located in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, is a stage for world-renowned contemporary artists and architects to engage with the local community. Tadao Ando's remarkable Casa Wabi dots the Pacific coastline of Mexico with structures by Alberto Kalach, Alvaro Siza, Kengo Kuma, Gloria Cabral, Solano Benitez, Jorge Ambrosi, and Gabriela Etchegaray. Founded in 2013 by renowned Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, it combines artist residencies, a gallery, and living quarters with classrooms, gardens, and public space.Tadao Ando centers the foundation on a 312-meter-long wall; his trademark concrete structures radiate off it, capped in woven palm tree leaves for ventilation. These local palapa-style roofs are often the only element distinguishing indoor and outdoor spaces, an effect complemented by wooden shutters in place of paned glass windows. Design Between the Physical and the Digital
What are the boundaries between the physical and the digital in design? This is the main question motivating the theoretical and practical investigations carried out in this work. However, the reasons for this question itself, as well as its relevance, proved to be more important than the mere search for answers. Another question arises: since when are the boundaries between the physical and the digital relevant to design? There are three areas of design that make a strong contribution to exploring the above question: parametric design, interaction design and digital fabrication. This paper is a search for a state of the art of the proposed themes and for a better understanding of the growing separation between the three areas, which, despite using similar terms and definitions, follow different paths in the literature. What has been written recently about parametric design, interaction design and digital fabrication presents us with varied and even divergent discourses. Because of this multifaceted aspect, the importance of a historical and bibliographical search for their origins and an understanding of the different points of view presented today is evident.

Architecture in motion
This book is based on my final year course work in Architecture and Urbanism, which sought to acquire the technical and theoretical background necessary to draw up a preliminary project for a residential Girat籀rio building in the city of Xanxer礙, SC. It also sought to analyse the city of Xanxer礙 and its region in order to justify the viability of such an undertaking, to study cases of similar buildings or projects, and from their successes or shortcomings that may have contributed to the success or failure of these projects, to develop theories and concepts that can guide the paths that the project should follow. Based on contemporary conceptual architecture, this project prioritises the idea and then looks for the constructive solutions available to realise the project.
Tropical Modernism
Pioneering and sometimes problematic Tropical Modernism is an essential subject for fans of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus Emerging in the death throes of colonial rule, the story of Tropical Modernism is one of politics and power, decolonization and defiance. Its leading proponents, British architects Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry, adapted a utopian Bauhaus-derived Modernist aesthetic to hot and humid conditions. After Independence, Tropical Modernism was championed by leaders including Jawaharlal Nehru and Kwame Nkrumah as a symbol of freedom, progressiveness and internationalism in monumental projects such as Chandigarh in Punjab planned by Le Corbusier and Black Star Square in Accra designed by Victor Adegbite. Scrutinizing the colonial narratives surrounding Tropical Modernism, and foregrounding the experience of African and Indian practitioners, this book reassesses an architectural style which has increasing relevance in today's changing climate.
Penal architecture as a mechanism for social reintegration
The aim of the research is to develop the preliminary architectural design of a medium-sized penitentiary for older male inmates, which meets the target audience, legislation, regulations and the overcrowding of current prisons. In which architecture works on the personality of inmates in the process of reintegration into society, with implementation in the city of Xanxer礙. The study was carried out in the form of descriptive bibliographical research and the method used was deductive, based on analysing case studies. To this end, the scope of the project's location was studied, as well as the need for a penitentiary to serve the region of the Alto Irani Association of Municipalities. It was considered that the current prison needs support in meeting demand, thus improving the quality of the penal execution system in the western region of the state of Santa Catarina, justifying the need for this project. In order to assess the feasibility of setting up the prison, the surrounding area, road system and infrastructures were taken into consideration, as well as climatic, physical and legal constraints, and an on-site survey was carried out to assess the location.
Toledo's Franklin Park Mall

New York Geologics
Manhattan is commonly regarded as an iconic island-territory of the twentieth century. Conventional representations reinforce its reading as an urban condition resulting from neoliberal capitalism. These forces have expanded the city grid and extruded its architectures as a laboratory of urban ideas. Yet, like many other coastal and insular conditions, twenty-first century Manhattan faces adverse Anthropogenic climate change. Stronger storm surges and sea level rise now demand that the island recalibrates its social and environmental positions. The city needs to consider once again its fluid archipelagic conditions inherited from glacial dynamics. With a focus on iconic city representations, the book examines distinct logics that try to make capitalist progress compatible with its territorial conditions. Even though these logics of land, water and ground - here called geologics - are perhaps less dominant than the dense urban culture and, therefore, less predominant in the representation of the city, they are still important to explain why Manhattan evolved to its current condition. The book explores these geologics through relationships between three nineteenth-century plans of Manhattan and three late-twentieth-century architectural manifestos - Delirious New York (Rem Koolhaas), The Manhattan Transcripts (Bernard Tschumi), and Lower Manhattan (Lebbeus Woods). Plans and manifestos are explored creatively through design experimentation that retrospectively repositions these representations from the perspectives offered by the Anthropocene. With an intricate connection between image, text, and installation, the book is an open invitation to radically interconnected imagination. Geologics advocate for architecture to become a productive and fluid mediation between city and geology. They propose a reconfiguration of urban territories as resilient hybrid possibilities amongst accelerated change and large-scale geoengineering.
