Three Pavilions by S矇rgio Bernardes Contribution to the Brazilian Modern Architectural Avant-Garde in the Mid-20th Century
As part of the second generation of modern architects from Rio de Janeiro - at least one decade separated him from the first group of modern architects acting in Rio, such as L繳cio Costa (1902-1998), Jorge Machado Moreira (1904-1992), Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) and Affonso Eduardo Reidy (1909-1964) -, S矇rgio Bernardes (1919-2002) was a son of the new times. Graduated in 1948 at the National School of Architecture of the University of Brazil, currently the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, his work began to consolidate precisely in the post-war period, when the North American culture was imposed as the greatest reference in the Brazilian context, leaving the European influence - and the French, as its greatest expression in the country16 - in the background.Fausto Sombra's research is based on some academic texts that converge in the affirmation of the greater affinity of Bernardes' work with the cultural and technological expe-rience underway in the United States;
Architectural Luxury. Theories of architecture and issues facing the field today
Academic Paper from the year 2024 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, grade: A, Free University of Berlin (Business Administration and Management), course: Architecture, language: English, abstract: This paper delves into the realm of architectural theory and its implications in the contemporary world, particularly focusing on the concept of architectural luxury. It begins by discussing the historical significance of architecture as a reflection of societal values and progress. The theories of architecture, ranging from Christian Norberg Schulz's Phenomenon of Place to the Universal Space theory and Functionalism, are explored in depth, highlighting their relevance to luxury architecture. Key issues facing architecture today, including the need for inclusivity, material limitations, and preservation of heritage, are thoroughly examined. Additionally, the paper explores the profound effects of architectural sites on individuals and society, emphasizing the importance of well-designed spaces for productivity, mood, and health. Finally, it discusses how changes in architectural trends have positively impacted society, with luxury architecture no longer confined to the elite but embraced as a vital aspect of modern living. Through comprehensive analysis and scholarly references, this paper provides valuable insights into the theories, challenges, and transformative potential of architecture in contemporary society.

Behind the Postmodern Facade
Magali Larson's comprehensive study explores how architecture "happens" and what has become of the profession in the postmodern era. Drawing from extensive interviews with pivotal architects--from Philip Johnson, who was among the first to introduce European modernism to America, to Peter Eisenman, identified with a new "deconstructionist" style--she analyzes the complex tensions that exist between economic interest, professional status, and architectural product. She investigates the symbolic awards and recognition accorded by prestigious journals and panels, exposing the inner workings of a profession in a precarious social position. Larson captures the struggles around status, place, and power as architects seek to redefine their very purpose in contemporary America. The author's novel approach in synthesizing sociological research and theory proposes nothing less than a new cultural history of architecture. This is a ground-breaking contribution to the study of culture and the sociology of knowledge, as well as to architectural and urban history. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1993 with a paperback edition in 1995.
The Labour Party, Housing and Urban Transformation
The Labour Party, Housing and Urban Transformation explores how the urban transformation of Britain between 1945 and 1970 was understood politically by the Labour Party. Placing the Labour Party at the centre of the discussion, the book covers the most extensive period of state-led urban change in British history, from the end of the Second World War to the decline of high modernism in the late 1960s. Taking a particular focus on housing to explore the implementation of modernist ideas to drive a far-ranging process of urban transformation in Britain, it challenges conventional understandings of Labour's urban legacy and puts political ideas at the heart of twentieth-century change. Utilising a breadth and range of material, including two distinct sets of archival sources, published secondary material, national legislation and Housing Acts, and various case studies, Child moves seamlessly between the national picture and its local impacts. It also draws from sources which had a crucial influence on political thinking throughout the mid-twentieth century to understand how urban transformation represented for Labour a political vision of the future. A timely contribution both to urban history and to the history of post-war Britain, it challenges existing interpretations of modernism, connects urban change to the political ideas that drove it, and allows us to comprehend the state of urban Britain today.

Exploring Gender in Vernacular Architecture
In Exploring Gender in Vernacular Architecture, Jessica Ellen Sewell considers the gender of those who create and shape spaces, how gender ideology contributes to and manifests itself in built form, and what research methods make the observation of gendered experience possible. She discusses single-gender, mixed-gender, and queer spaces, providing a comprehensive look at how gender influences the design and construction of those spaces, how those spaces are used, and the relationship between gender and the broader architectural landscape. In her study, Sewell also provides an expansive view of how gender intersects with other categories of power and difference, such as race, class, and age, and how this intersectionality contributes to the design and use of built spaces. In addition to examining the spaces themselves, Sewell explores research methods for studying gendered experiences in architecture. She argues that traditional research methods in vernacular architecture studies, which often focus on building-based fieldwork, should be complemented by other methods--such as letters, oral histories, and diaries--that expand the understanding of buildings beyond their construction date and reveal how those buildings have been used and represented over time. Digging into primary records, Sewell posits, can help challenge our assumptions about who influences architecture and urban development, illuminating the roles of women and others in the building and shaping of space. Thoroughly researched yet accessible for scholars new to the study of vernacular architecture, Exploring Gender in Vernacular Architecture bridges the gap between specialized scholarship and broader public understanding. Students of architectural history, gender studies, and cultural history will find it a valuable resource not only for examining the relationship between gender and architecture, but for engaging new methodological tools that may further their own research.
London
A lively new history of London told through twenty-five buildings, from iconic Georgian townhouses to the Shard A walk along any London street takes you past a wealth of seemingly ordinary buildings: an Edwardian church, modernist postwar council housing, stuccoed Italianate terraces, a Bauhaus-inspired library. But these buildings are not just functional. They are evidence of London's rich and diverse history and have shaped people's experiences, identities, and relationships. In this engaging study, Paul L. Knox traces the history of London from the Georgian era to the present day through twenty-five surviving buildings. Knox explores where people lived and worked, from grand Regency squares to Victorian workshops, and highlights the impact of migration, gentrification, and inequality. We see famous buildings, like Harrods and Abbey Road Studios, and everyday places like Rochelle Street School and Thamesmead. Each historical period has introduced new buildings, and old ones have been repurposed. As Knox shows, it is the living history of these buildings that makes up the vibrant, but exceptionally unequal, city of today.

Building Materials, Health and Indoor Air Quality
In Building Materials, Health and Indoor Air Quality: Volume 2 Tom Woolley uses new research to continue to advocate for limiting the use of hazardous materials in construction and raise awareness of the links between pollutants found in building materials, poor indoor air quality and health problems. Chapters in this volume reinforce previous arguments and present new ones covering: Further evidence of the health impacts of hazardous emissions from materials Hazardous materials to be avoided and why Fire and smoke toxicity - the Lakanal House and Grenfell Tower legacy Sub-standard retrofits leading to damp and mould in previously sound houses A critical review of recent reports from UK Government and others on air quality and health problems including policy changes on flame retardants Growing evidence of cancer risks and the failure of cancer research organisations to address these issues A critical review of recent climate change and zero carbon policies and a discussion on whether extreme energy efficiency is a good thing This book asks some important and, for some, uncomfortable questions, but in doing so it brings to light important areas for research and provides much needed guidance for architects, engineers, construction professionals, students and researchers on hazardous materials and how to reduce their use and design and build healthier buildings for all occupants.
Sir Edwin Lutyens
As the first title in a new series from Triglyph Books, Clive Aslet has written a short biography of Sir Edwin Lutyens, among the greatest of British architects. Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) was one of the great architects of the twentieth century. His Edwardian country houses, surrounded by rhapsodic gardens, beguiled clients with their romance and wit. After 1918, the war memorials that he created symbolized a grieving nation's sense of loss. In the new capital of the British Raj, New Delhi, the Viceroy's House or Rashtrapati Bhavan had a footprint bigger than Versailles. His unfinished Liverpool Cathedral would have rivalled St Peter's in Rome. Intensely shy, Lutyens hid his personality behind puns and jokes - and yet he could be called 'part mystic', a reference to an inner profundity. Rich in stories, this entertaining and stylish short biography is a major new study incorporating fresh research which shows this most charismatic of architects in a new light.
Stonehenge
Stonehenge is one of the most famous ancient monuments in the world and its solar alignment is one of its most important features. Yet although archaeologists have learned a huge amount about this iconic monument and its development, a sense of mystery continues about its purpose. This helps fuel numerous theories and common misconceptions, particularly concerning its relationship to the sky and the heavenly bodies. A desire to cut through this confusion was the inspiration for this book, and it fills a gaping hole in the existing literature. The book provides both an introduction to Stonehenge and its landscape and an introduction to archaeoastronomy--the study of how ancient peoples understood phenomena in the sky, and what role the sky played in their cultures. Archaeoastronomy is a specialism critical to explaining the relationship of Stonehenge and nearby monuments to the heavens, but interpreting archaeoastronomical evidence has often proved highly controversial in the past. Stonehenge: Sighting the Sun explains why. It makes clear which ideas about Stonehenge are generally accepted and which are not, with clear graphics to explain complicated concepts. This beautifully illustrated book shines new light on this most famous of ancient monuments, and is the first in-depth study of this fascinating topic suitable both for specialists and for anyone with a general interest. The volume includes a Foreword by British archaeologist and academic Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe.

Pau-Brasil Culture When L繳cio Costa met M獺rio de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade and Tarsila do Amaral
In a well-known debate with Geraldo Ferraz in 1948, L繳cio Costa argued that modern architecture as practiced in Brazil only became truly interesting when the functional grounds of this new architecture - bequeathed to us by Le Corbusier - were incorporated and developed by the national genius. From then on - the argument goes -, we could actually be proud of an architecture that was authentically ours, deeply rooted in a tradition that went back to the colonial baroque style from Minas Gerais. Moreover, in our modern architectural production, Oscar Niemeyer played a role equivalent to that of Aleijadinho, embodying to the highest degree the latent possibilities of "Brazilianness". "There is much more affinity" - L繳cio Costa insisted - "between Oscar's work, as seen in the admirable Pampulha ensemble, and Aleijadinho's masterpiece - the church of S瓊o Francisco de Assis, in Ouro Preto - than between Oscar's work and that of Warchavchik - which is, in my view, a quite significant fact." Even more significant than that is the formula L繳cio Costa applies when he's sorting out affinities and pushing the premise that the national element in this new architecture is actually more vigorous than the modern one. He argues that, on the one hand, there are genuine, innovativeworks - seeds that sprout beautifully in our tropical soil, nurtured by the most authentic native sap; on the other hand, we also find imitations devoid of any ties to our traditions; these are second or third-hand copies, like exotic trees transplanted after full maturation somewhere else. L繳cio Costa's words, pregnant with meanings, implications and commitments, outlines a distinction that has enjoyed a long history among us, that is: the distinction between Brazilian modern architecture and modern architecture in Brazil.
George Edmund Street
This is the first monograph of George Edmund Street, a prolific High Victorian architect of churches and other buildings, the best known of which is the Royal Courts of Justice (the Law Courts). He was born in Essex and, after being articled in Winchester, worked in the office of George Gilbert Scott before setting out on his own account. His earliest works were in Cornwall, but he went on to design many churches, parsonages and schools in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, having been appointed Oxford diocesan architect. Moving to London opened up commissions far and wide, as far north as Aberdeenshire, and also abroad. He paid great attention to the fittings and furnishings of his churches, taking a particular detailed interest in stained glass and embroidery. He was renowned for always completing all his own drawings personally, to the frustration of his pupils and assistants, including Philip Webb and Norman Shaw, who successively became his chief assistant before branching out on their own. His early death at the age of 57 is often attributed to the strain of building the Law Courts, which were completed after his death.Geoff Brandwood, who died suddenly in November 2021, was the author of monographs on Sharpe, Paley & Austin and on Temple Moore. He was a former chairman of the Victorian Society.2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Edmund Street.

California Houses
California Houses brings together thirty-six houses completed over the past ten years that capture the spirit of California in distinctive ways and respond creatively to context and the environment. They engage forests and deserts, the ocean and city streets. Large or small, they demonstrate the extraordinary range of invention emerging from the offices of established and younger architects. This is a celebration of the best talent as well as clients with the imagination and means to commission houses that are one-of-a-kind and advance the art of architecture.California is a hotbed of sustainable construction, as mandated by state legislation, and all of these houses employ active and passive strategies to reduce their carbon footprint. There's a strong emphasis on natural light and ventilation, thermal insulation, and solar panels. Rainwater is harvested for irrigation. These are homes constructed to conserve energy, withstand earthquakes and, often, to resist wildfires, but without losing their aesthetic appeal. The selection ranges from a landscaped concrete dome to an inflatable shelter that can be assembled and relocated as easily as a tent. An expansive ocean-front retreat contrasts with a bungalow that has been transformed on a shoestring budget and a weekend cabin in a desert wilderness. One house cascades down a wooded hillside, another spans a creek, and several more are tucked into confined city lots.

Magic Architecture
The first publication of artist and architect Frederick Kiesler's epoch-spanning history of human architecture, largely unknown but still relevant. Magic Architecture was the architect Frederick Kiesler's most ambitious book project, an epoch-spanning history of human housing from prehistory to the atomic era, submitted to editors after World War II but left unpublished. In its holistic view of habitation through the lens of anthropology, ecology, and the life sciences, Magic Architecture is one of the most extraordinary texts on architecture written in the twentieth century, now at last published in the twenty-first. Kiesler's exploration of the effects of modern technology in combination with the alternative epistemology of "magical" practices associated with cave drawings and the first artifacts of human industry reflects his profoundly interdisciplinary perspective on the development of art, architecture, and design. This critical edition preserves Kiesler's conception of the book as a neo-Vitruvian treatise divided into ten parts that narrate an alternative history and theory of architecture. Also included are more than seventy composite plate illustrations consisting of images cut and pasted from books and popular science journals, with elaborate captions, as well as Kiesler's own line drawings made specifically for this project. The editors have reassembled the book's text and illustrations from archival documents, supplementing them with notes that trace the copious development of the work. Introductory essays provide an interpretation of key themes and bibliographic sources, as well as a chronological context of the architect's research. Appendixes offer additional textual and visual material gathered by Kiesler for the project.
Kinetic Architecture
Throughout history, architects have sought to evolve buildings from static objects into dynamic systems meeting occupants' changing demands. This inspired designs that interact with people and surroundings, incorporating movement, sound, light, wind, heat, and humidity. Responsive behavior, achieved through computation and kinetic systems, allows buildings to adapt harmoniously to surroundings while meeting user needs. This research examines kinetic architecture as a transformative future strategy. Traditional static designs often fail to meet user and environmental needs. Kinetic architecture, with movable components, responsive facades, and flexible spatial changes, offers dynamic solutions like energy optimization, user comfort enhancement, and resource utilization. Its integration advances building design, creating better living conditions and sustainable environments. Kinetic architecture's dynamic nature allows intelligent responses to changing demands, benefiting occupants and the ecosystem. This adaptability enhances the quality of life and fosters harmonious coexistence.
Ancient Roman Villas
This authoritative compendium of newly translated primary sources reveals ancient Roman attitudes on every aspect of villas, from selection of place and construction activities to day-to-day management and lived experiences. While the term villa is generic today, its meaning extended across the entirety of ancient Roman life: villas supplied food, oil, and wine to towns and cities and produced raw materials for craft industries and building construction. Villas were also venues for pleasure, relaxation, and the cultivation of friendships and the mind. Many were known for their spectacular sites, architecture, decoration, and furnishings. They came to be ubiquitous throughout ancient Rome's European and Mediterranean rural hegemony. This volume compiles a wealth of newly translated Latin and ancient Greek sources--treatises, letters, poems, histories, biographies, and other works of literary art--to vividly convey the architectural, economic, social, political, and cultural significance of ancient Roman villas, from their Greek antecedents through the early Christian period. Thematic chapters reveal ancient Roman attitudes on villa architecture, agricultural operations, and the practices of buying, building, and decorating villas as well as entertaining and pursuing leisure there. References to family, gender relations, and the lives of enslaved persons aim to situate, if only indirectly, a broad range of experiences within villas. Supplemented by generous commentaries, copious annotation, a comprehensive bibliography, and a glossary, this definitive sourcebook equips scholars and students alike for further research and makes for fascinating reading.
Potency of the Vernacular Settlements
The 11th ISVS (International Seminar for Vernacular Settlements) that was hosted by the School of Environmental Design and Architecture, Navrachana University brought together some important ideas and concerns as related to questions of development at large and vernacular settlements. From questions of ecological balance, use of resources and the way of the pastoral to the ones concerning technology, design and materiality of built environment. The 11th ISVS will be remembered as one that brought whole generation of young and talented scholars in the foreground. Many of them had carried out extensive field work to support their research. The seminar was also remarkable from the point of view of extensive representation of vernacular traditions in different part of the Indian Sub-continent and Southeast Asia along with a range of theoretical concerns.
Inside Yucat獺n
Exploring forgotten regions of Mexico's Yucat獺n Peninsula, Susana Ordov獺s and photographer Guido Taroni uncover the faded splendor of both neglected and restored homes. Susana Ordov獺s's Inside Yucat獺n is an ode to the merging of the ancient with the contemporary. At the turn of the 20th century, more millionaires lived in the isolated region of M矇rida than in any other city in the world, building breathtaking, brightly colored homes nestled into the surrounding tropical greenery like hidden jewels. Over time, nature conquered, leaving crumbling structures in place of what were once vibrant, lavishly decorated mansions. But today, Ordov獺s reveals, Yucat獺n's "forsaken, decaying ruins, remnants of an illustrious past . . . are awakening from a centuries-old siesta." Here, in Guido Taroni's evocative new photographs of more than 30 previously unseen residences across the peninsula, in such places as Izamal, M矇rida, and Valladolid, decadence and beauty shine through what remains of the homes' diverse, contrasting styles, from Renaissance to Baroque, Medieval to Moorish, and occasionally a combination of all. Setting the houses in context, three specially commissioned maps of the region have been beautifully illustrated by renowned artist Jes繳s Cisneros. In her detailed commentary, Ordov獺s celebrates their eccentric, distressed charm and hails the revival of this magical land.
Dear Susan... We're all going on a summer holiday... (Blow the NHS!)
This sequel is a personal attempt to develop further a blue-print for new dedicated smaller NHS hospitals, using illustrations to show how these might look. The buildings and facilities within which patients are treated and staff have to work are so important to the well being and successful outcomes but are too often ignored. This paperback encloses a kind of review (a complaint really) about what happened following publication of the first "Dear Susan..." and what did not happen. It shows how its target audience, including some people in a position of power, are simply able to ignore a possible blue-print for the NHS when there is a scarcity of blue-prints. In taking a second chance at making the case for smaller hospitals, plans are used to show how the NHS might be provided with a rapidly built new generation of trauma and elective care centres. These should sidestep what has gone on before and is going on now to inappropriately transform larger, failing, older hospitals which are in the wrong place or to provide new large hospitals that are not fit for purpose post-Covid. The author is hoping that there is some-one out there savvy enough to want to try to build a brighter and better future and renew confidence in our really hard done by NHS.

Tangible and Intangible Heritage in the Age of Globalisation
Tangible and Intangible Heritage in the Age of Globalisation is a rich collection that illuminates the complex interrelationships between tangible and intangible heritage.Offering a close and critical examination of heritage preservation in countries including Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Egypt, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Oman, Syria and Tunisia, these essays illustrate the need to redefine heritage as an interdisciplinary and intercultural concept. They interrogate heritage paradigms while also providing concrete recommendations to promote the preservation of physical heritage spaces, and the cultural practices and social relationships that depend on them.Rich in detail and broad in relevance, this book emphasises specific cultural realities while also reflecting on the impact of global historical, social, economic and political trends to heritage conservation, scrutinising the conditions of the past to adapt them to the needs of the present and future. It will be of great relevance to all those interested in the preservation and management of heritage sites, including architects, urban planners, landscape architects, historians, sociologists and archaeologists, as well as heritage marketing, museum and cultural tourism professionals.
