The book investigates spatial practices at the ground level of Beirut - Appropriation, Commoning, Production, and Activism - that fill the gap between the city's capital-driven development and the aspirations and needs of its inhabitants, in search for cohabitation and planning lessons that withstand chaos and uncertainty. Through such practices, the book reflects on the ground's project for collectivity reclaiming it as the backbone for co-producing the city.Unique in its context, Beirut has been an ideal laboratory for social practices that characterize its urban culture and shape the experience of the city at ground level. These spontaneous practices fill the gap between the city's capital-driven development and the aspirations/ needs of its inhabitants, transforming Beirut's ground into a symbiotic environment of cohabitation, as a confrontation to alienating trends that shaped Beirut in its recent history, and as a response to the financial/health/ humanitarian crises that have been enchaining the city since 2019. This book examines specifically four spatial practices - Appropriation, Commoning, Production, and Activism - in how they inform and transform the diverse urban morphologies of the city from built matter to cultural organization. Amaza Lee Meredith Imagines Herself Modern tells the captivating story of Amaza Lee Meredith, a Black woman architect, artist, and educator born into the Jim Crow South, whose bold choices in both life and architecture expand our understanding of the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance, while revealing the importance of architecture as a force in Black middle-class identity. Through her charismatic protagonist, Jacqueline Taylor derives new insights into the experiences of Black women at the forefront of culture in early twentieth-century America, caught between expectation and ambition, responsibility and desire. Central to Taylor's argument is that Meredith's response to modern architecture and art, like those of other Black cultural producers, was not marginal to the modernist project; instead, her work reveals the tensions and inconsistencies in how American modernism has been defined. Despite taking unconventional paths to architecture, both Hilliers enjoyed exhilarating careers growing the firm to 500 people and executing nearly 4,000 projects in 27 U.S. States and 34 Foreign Countries. The quality of the firm's work has been honored by over 350 design awards. The selected projects in this monograph are driven by strictly disciplined programing and then conceived by bringing into balance all the forces at work on a project: culture, climate, site, economics, market, and even politics. The resultant architecture is distinctive of its time, its place, and its client, rather than of a particular language or style. In 2008, Hillier Architecture, then one of the largest firms in the country, merged with a foreign firm to create the 3rd largest architectural firm worldwide. Studio Hillier, the firm's current iteration, was formed in 2012. More recently, NJIT's College of Architecture and Design was renamed the J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier College of Architecture and Design, celebrating the Hilliers' commitment to providing more equitable access to design education.

Architecture and Abstraction
A landmark study of abstraction in architectural history, theory, and practice that challenges our assumptions about the meaning of abstract forms. In this theoretical study of abstraction in architecture--the first of its kind--Pier Vittorio Aureli argues for a reconsideration of abstraction, its meanings, and its sources. Although architects have typically interpreted abstraction in formal terms--the purposeful reduction of the complexities of design to its essentials--Aureli shows that abstraction instead arises from the material conditions of building production. In a lively study informed by Walter Benjamin, Karl Marx, Alfred Sohn-Rethel, and other social theorists, this book presents abstraction in architecture not as an aesthetic tendency but as a movement that arises from modern divisions of labor and consequent social asymmetries. These divisions were anticipated by the architecture of antiquity, which established a distinction between manual and intellectual labor, and placed the former in service to the latter. Further abstractions arose as geometry, used for measuring territories, became the intermediary between land and money and eventually produced the logic of the grid. In our own time, architectural abstraction serves the logic of capitalism and embraces the premise that all things can be exchanged--even experience itself is a commodity. To resist this turn, Aureli seeks a critique of architecture that begins not by scaling philosophical heights, but by standing at the ground level of material practice.
