50 Architecture Ideas You Really Need to Know
In a series of 50 accessible essays, Philip Wilkinson introduces architectural movements and styles throughout history, as well as describing some of the greatest architects' most important and representative works. From the Pyramids of Giza to the Guggenheim, the classical orders of Vitruvius to the most recent contemporary trends today, 50 Architecture Ideas You Really Need to Know is a complete introduction to the most important architectural concepts in history.
Building/Object
Building/Object addresses the space in between the conventional objects of design and the conventional objects of architecture, probing and reassessing the differences between the disciplines of design history and architectural history Each of the 13 chapters in this book examine things which are neither object-like nor building-like, but somewhere in between - air conditioning; bookshelves; partition walls; table-monuments; TVs; convenience stores; cars - exposing particular political configurations and resonances that otherwise might be occluded. In doing so, they reveal that the definitions we make of objects in opposition to buildings, and of architecture in opposition to design, are not as fundamental as they seem. This book brings new aspects of the creative and experiential into our understanding of the human environment.
Architectural Technicities
This book poses a simple question: how is this architecture possible? To respond, it will embark in a captivating journey through many singular architectural concepts.
Novel Approaches in Materials and Technologies for Building Construction
The book discusses the latest developments in the area of building constructions. Most of the building components such as columns, roofs and concrete blocks are available in prefabricated forms that increase the speed of construction processes. The goal is to engineer buildings that are sustainable, efficient, resilient, economically viable; and ensure the safety, health and comfort of occupants. New materials and technologies aim at energy efficiency, water conservation, improved indoor air quality, durability and low life cycle and maintenance costs.

The Book of Shores
Mary Buchinger's The Book of Shores is a meditation into the nature of being, one that recognizes that "there once was a self/ known only to self// who carried the sea/ wherever she went." The verses in this collection are both restless and still, formally inventive and thrumming with lines that are "always talking/ about more than one thing." It's a collection that takes risks to name the ineffable, to chart the topography of one's interior landscape, to "[l]ift its lithosphere/ as you would/ the lid of a chest" so that we might explore "within its rifts and/ escarpment something in there/ making new an immensity/ that will not diminish." -Brian Turner, author of The Wild Delight of Wild Things
Form Follows Roots
The book is an attempt to cover contemporary architecture of India from 1985 to 2021. It traces the history of architecture by covering most of the buildings built during this period. This publication is an endeavour to cover works of small cities, towns and villages which require a different kind of tackling altogether, as skilled manpower is not easily available at such places. Required machinery and equipment to construct buildings are not available either. The main body of work highlights projects catering to the lower and middle income groups, barring some exceptions of prestigious projects. Current issues from the field of architecture have been addressed in the book by quoting practical examples.

Restoration & Renovation of Abandoned Historical Places
Preface This book is written from practical experience and for the future generation's reference. The heritage and historical buildings are significant to evident the actual history. The two primary reasons were kept in mind during the writing of this book. First, is the historical significance. Second, many self-made scholars put detriment to the Khalsa Panth history and deterring the name of the Historical places with their thoughts without any research. The history given in this book is referenced from the Khalsa Panth authenticated resources like Mahan Kosh of Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha, Suraj Parkash Granth, Prachin Panth Prakash, and the scholars of Damdami Taksal. This book aims to guide how to restore the centuries-old building with the same material in their original structure. It also explains that the ingredients used in the material are powerful and helpful in the environment for better health. The heritage and historical buildings do not need to destroy by saying that there is no way to save them. This book provides ways to keep the historically significant building to preserve them for the coming generations. These buildings provide pieces of evidence for the glory of the religions, states, and nations. The development of the Sikha Theory of Restoration, Renovation, and Reconstruction was based on the guidance from the material used during the Khalsa empires. It explains how that material is beneficial for human and environmental health, how nature made the materials for constructing the buildings, and how we can use them for a better living experience. Satpreet Singh
Berthold Lubetkin
This book presents a compact and compelling account of the life and work of Berthold Lubetkin (1901-1990), widely regarded as the outstanding architect of his generation to practise in England. It explores the key themes, achievements and setbacks of his career, drawing from the author's twenty-year personal friendship with Lubetkin himself, from discussions with former colleagues, and from his direct experience of working with many of Lubetkin's buildings as a conservation architect. The study reveals the significance of Lubetkin's Russian origins and European travels, re-assesses his prime work of the 1930s and charts the extensive output of his often-overlooked post-war career. It also considers Lubetkin's legacy in the later work of his key associates, several of whom became significant architects in their own right.Lubetkin is a legendary figure in architectural circles, while still remaining slightly mysterious and misunderstood. The author shines new light on the man and his ideas, and assesses his unique place in modern architectural history. Illustrations include original black & white images as well as high-quality colour studies of the buildings as they are now. A complete List of Works and published commentaries also provide a valuable source of reference.
Edwin Rickards
Edwin Rickards was the most flamboyant of Edwardian architects: his buildings were said by John Summerson to fizz like champagne. During a short working life, launched at the age of 25 by winning the competition to design Cardiff City Hall with his partners H.V. Lanchester and James Stewart, he completed four spectacular baroque buildings.Rickards' work was unique in Edwardian architecture for his personal combination of French and especially Austrian sources. Working closely with H.C. Fehr and Henry Poole, leading practitioners of the New Sculpture, he designed two of the major monuments of the period. As well as being one of the best freehand draughtsmen in London, he was also a prodigious caricaturist. With a foot in the demi-monde and an endless appetite for architectural and personal adventure, Rickards was an unforgettable figure to everyone who met him.Illustrated throughout with stunning new photography by Robin Forster and by Rickards' own sketches and drawings, this book portrays his close friendship with the novelist Arnold Bennett who described him, along with H.G Wells, as one of 'the two most interesting, provocative, and stimulating men I have yet encountered', and his meteoric career that ended with his early death.
Artificial Intelligent Architecture
The impact of artificial intelligence in the discipline of architecture is unavoidable and undeniable. The recent mass adoption of highly accessible machine learning tools including DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney has allowed designers to test their limits and assess their role as an author in the design of the built environment. This book will include speculations on the introduction of artificial intelligence bots/apps into architecture and feature a collection of works from eighteen architects and designers who are interrogating current AI applications. Within each chapter, authors put forth a position through a framework consisting of theory and application lenses. Additionally, interviews from leading practitioners will offer insights into the current curiosities fueling investigation. This book will incite dialogue about the potential of AI as an ideation device and extension of the architect's authorship. As a part of this work, curation plays an important role as the technology generates content at an incredible pace. Architectural design thinking will have to reconcile the injection of this new tool and this book will speculate on the current state in its infancy.
House Cat
This is not a book about cats. Nor is it a book on interiors. It is somewhere in-between: a look at how cats and interiors interact, and how cats become a fundamental part of one's home. Really, it is about how a cat completely takes over their home. House Cat is a celebration of fifty-seven charismatic cats and the incredible spaces that they nonchalantly wander. From Grace Coddington's famous felines in their cosmopolitan New York apartment all the way to the farmhouse cat who has no idea that his owner is the great Bunny Williams.Paul Barbera's stunning photography transports you from a ninety-one-story-high penthouse above Billionaires' Row straight to a Mexican hacienda-inspired home complete with nine cats. It is the ultimate pairing of enviable abodes and the mischievous cats that call them home.
Bingu矇, the Other Side of the Medal
Bingu矇, The Other Side of the Medal is the first novel by Famahan SAMAK?. This story coldly analyses the problem of African emigration in Europe with its trail of broken homes, shattered lives and dreams in tatters. It also paints, without concession, not only the communitarianism that is the trademark of Western society, but also the clash of cultures and the abject and senseless terrorism that targets the West. This novel also denounces the religious syncretism that characterises many Africans who find it difficult to forsake the spirits and idols of their forefathers despite claiming to be Muslims or Christians. Excerpt ''He even asked me whether I was comfortable in the handcuffs, otherwise he would loosen them up much further. How can one ever be comfortable in chains ? I thought that only the Kunta Kint矇s and demons suffered such fate, but certainly not me. I was in chains and I was leaving my house in shackles, flanked by two policewomen who framed me right and left. I was under arrest. I was in chains. I was in shackles like I often read about it in French literary works by writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Alexandre Dumas. I was in shackles. Yes, it was not a dream, not even a nightmare. I had just been shackled up. And it was real. How did my son feel as he witnessed that scene ? I never knew. We never talked about it. It was the law of the omerta. We acted like it never happened. Someone said that great pains are ever so silent. It was most likely true. In any case, I concede they were right all along".

Design and the Vernacular
Design and the Vernacular explores the intersection between vernacular architecture, local cultures, and modernity and globalization, focussing on the vast and diverse global region of Australasia and Oceania. The relevance and role of vernacular architecture in contemporary urban planning and architectural design are examined in the context of rapid political, economic, technological, social and environmental changes, including globalization, exchanges of people, finance, material culture, and digital technologies. Sixteen chapters by architects designers and theorists, including Indigenous writers, explore key questions about the agency of vernacular architecture in shaping contemporary building and design practice. These questions include: How have Indigenous building traditions shaped modern building practices? What can the study of vernacular architecture contribute to debates about sustainable development? And how has vernacular architecture been used to argue for postcolonial modernisation and nation-building and what has been the effect on heritage and conservation? Such questions provide valuable case studies and lessons for architecture in other global regions -- and challenge assumptions about vernacular architecture being anachronistic and static, instead demonstrating how it can shape contemporary architecture, nation building and cultural identities.
Italian Imprints on Twentieth-Century Architecture
Italian architecture has long exerted a special influence on the evolution of architectural ideas elsewhere - from the Beaux-Arts academy's veneration of Rome, to modernist and postmodern interest in Renaissance proportion, Baroque space, and Mannerist ambiguity. This book critically examines this enduring phenomenon, exploring the privileged position of Italian architects, architecture, and cities in the architectural culture of the past century. Questioning the deep-rooted myth of Italy within architectural history, the book presents case studies of Italy's powerful yet problematic position in 20th-century architectural ideologies, at a time when established Eurocentric narratives are rightly being challenged. It reconciles the privileged position of Italian architecture and design with the imperative to write history across a more global, diverse, heterogenous cultural geography. Twenty chapters from distinguished international scholars cover subjects and architects ranging from Alberti to Gio Ponti, Aldo Rossi, Manfredo Tafuri, Vittorio Gregotti; cities from Rome and Venice to Milan; and an array of international architects, movements, and architectural ideas influenced by Italy. The chapters each question where, how, and why the disciplinary edifice of 20th-century architecture-its canon of built, visual, textual, and conceptual works-relied on Italian foundations, examining where and how those foundations have become insecure. Indispensable for students and scholars of both Italian and global architectural history, Italian Imprints on Twentieth-Century Architecture provides an opportunity to consider the architectural and urban landscape of Italy from substantially new points of view.
Artificial Love
A vision of architecture that includes sculpture, machines, and technology and encapsulates the history of the human species.According to Paul Shepheard, architecture is the rearranging of the world for human purposes. Sculpture, machines, and landscapes are all architecture-every bit as much as buildings are. In his writings, Shepheard examines old assumptions about architecture and replaces the critical theory of the academic with the active theory of the architect-citizen enamored of the world around him.Artificial Love weaves together three stories about architecture into one. The first, about machines as architecture, leads to speculations about technology and the human condition and to the assertion that machines are the sculptures of today. The second story is about the ways that architecture reflects the tribal and personal desires of those who make it. In the West, ideas of community, multiculturalism, and globalization compete furiously, leaving architecture to exist as it always has, as the past in the present. The third story features individual people experiencing their lives in the context of architecture. Here, Shepheard borrows the rhetorical device of Shakespeare's seven ages of man to propose that each person's life imitates the accumulating history of the human species. Shepheard's version of the history of humans is a technological one, in which machines become sculpture and sculpture becomes architecture. For Shepheard, our machines do not separate us from nature. Rather, our technology is our nature, and we cannot but be in harmony with nature. The change that we have wrought in the world, he says, is a wonderful and powerful thing.
The Art and Philosophy of the Garden
The Art and Philosophy of the Garden offers the first authoritative and comprehensive philosophical discussion of the aesthetics of gardens. Philosopher David Fenner and horticulturist Ethan Fenner address such questions as: what is a garden? Are some gardens works of art? What does it mean to appreciate gardens aesthetically? Given that gardens are always changing in a variety of ways, how is it possible to compare, evaluate, or find meaning in them? How can we interpret gardens? How do we value gardens and gardening? While grounded in Western thought, Fenner and Fenner bring to bear global ideas and examples of gardens and gardening techniques. Inspired by a surge of philosophical interest in gardening, Fenner and Fenner argue that some gardens are indeed works of art. They explore how we might understand the aesthetic properties of gardens, and focus on what it means to "read" the formal aspects of gardens -- what the authors call "garden form" -- as a basis for interpreting a garden. They discuss the intersection of gardens/gardening and value: questions such as what sort of value gardens possess; whether and how ethics are relevant to gardens; how gardens may be evaluated and compared; and the value of the practice of gardening. This comprehensive philosophical discussion on the aesthetics of gardens and gardening will not only interest those concerned with garden theory but will interest any thoughtful and intellectually curious gardener.

Architecture of Ridges and Valleys
The book looks at the vernacular architecture and traditional development in the hills through vitally crucial state of Himachal Pradesh. It documents and dwells upon the traditional construction techniques like the Kath-Kuni technique, amongst others. The book very skillfully tries to weave together the importance of vernacular of the hills with its integral relationship with sustainability. The authors also look at the changing architectural character of its most important city Shimla and stress the need as to why the lost heritage and wisdom of the tradition not be restored.
Construction of the Fa癟ade Systems
The book explores the advanced fa癟ade systems according to the productive and constructive contents, in a cognitive and operative form, as a manual text to provide guidelines for researchers, technicians and professionals. It provides operational guidance for the technological design, production planning and site executive coordination for the realization of fa癟ade systems. The analysis deals with the main building elements and technical interfaces. The study of the fa癟ade systems, after explaining the anchoring structures and their connections to the load-bearing elements, investigates the criteria for the assembly between the framings. In particular, the book examines the technical interfaces of the main advanced envelope systems with respect to the functional, constructive and applicative coordination procedures of the mullions and transoms framing, of the structural sealant glazing fa癟ade system, of the unit fa癟ade system, of the suspended fa癟ade system and of the double skin fa癟ade system. The technical and manual character of the book is also expressed through the analysis of the functional and application procedures of the gaskets with respect to the fa癟ade systems in order to prevent the transmission of air and water loads: the analysis focuses on the connections between the framing and the enclosure elements of the envelope, in accordance with the compensation of height differences in order to guarantee impermeability, airtightness and insulation. Then, the book describes the assembly and interface conditions between elements of different composition and production within the fa癟ade systems: the examination of the technical interfaces involves the development and application of sealants, based on the loads exerted on the jointing devices, in order to fulfill the requirements of sealing and tightness with respect to mechanical, thermal and hygrometric, water, air and wind stresses. Moreover, the study of the envelope systems examines the methodologies directed toward fulfilling the requirements with respect to the actions caused by fire loads, considering the contents related to both components and connections and fixing surfaces.

To help students of all professions caring for urban areas and the people, animals, and plants that live in them, the authors set out the environmental and ecological science of cities, linkages between urban nature and human health, urban food production in cities, and how we can value urban nature. The authors explore our responsibilities for urban nature and greening, ecological management techniques, and the use of nature-based solutions to achieve a better, more sustainable urban future and ensure that cities can climate change and become more beautiful and more sustainable places in which to live. This text provides the student and the practitioner with a critical scientific overview of urban ecology that will be a key source of data and ideas for studies and for sound urban management.
Security by Design
This is a book about the intersection of architecture and security, about effective crime prevention and counterterror using the built form. While security professionals continue their strive towards alleviating our fear of crimes, and whilst methodologies like CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) have demonstrated the impact of design on prevention of crime over the last five decades, too many built environment professionals are not aware of these strategies. This book starts with the premise that there is a huge role for the design fraternity (namely architects and planners) in achieving realistic, efficient and permanent results, and ultimately in creating a safer world. It seeks to present such strategies in a palatable way and encourage professionals to incorporate security thinking into their design process as second nature. Combining international case studies including One World Trade Centre, New York; WHO Headquarters Extension Building, Geneva; and the Akshardham Temple, New Delhi, along with numerous examples from the author's professional career, this book offers a systematic approach to integrating security into built environment design for easy adoption by architects, planners, security professionals and policymakers.
Bell's Cathedrals
Bell's Cathedrals: The Cathedral Church Of York: A Description Of Its Fabric And A Brief History Of The Archi-Episcopal See This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
