Theatre Buildings
In 2021, its Diamond Jubilee year, the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT) undertook to revise Theatre Buildings: A Design Guide (Routledge, 2010). This new edition (Routledge, 2023) has substantially re-written text with fresh images and entirely new reference projects, providing essential guidance for all those engaged in the design of theatre buildings. Edited by Margaret Shewring (Emeritus Reader, University of Warwick, former Director of the Postgraduate Diploma and MA in Theatre Consultancy), this new publication is written by a team of international experts, architects, theatre consultants, acousticians, engineers and industry professionals led by Tim Foster (Foster Wilson Size) and Robin Townley (CEO of the ABTT). It provides an invaluable resource for those looking to build, remodel or conserve theatre buildings, taking into account the significant changes which have taken place in the last twelve years in all aspects of theatre design and technical practice. It locates those changes in the wider context of the need for sustainability in the theatre industry in response to the climate emergency, inclusivity, diversity of access, placemaking and concerns for health and wellbeing. This new edition provides guidance for anyone who seeks inspiration and encouragement to create or improve a place of entertainment or who seeks to understand what might be required to accommodate an audience for the presentation of live performance and the successful use, operation and organisation of such a venue. Its generous format and the thirty-two new reference projects, more than 260 high-resolution colour images and 175 diagrams and specially commissioned plans make it accessible and informative both to the general reader and the professional specialist.
Seoul
This book focuses on understanding how a megacity like Seoul can be read as a formal architectural composition and not an endless urban sprawl. In a broader sense, the book discusses the dichotomy between city and urbanization: "city" being an architectural problem of bounded forms, while "urbanism" is an infrastructural project of expansion. It is an uncontested reality that urbanization is a continuous global process that has produced nebulous conurbations labeled as megacities. These expand beyond the virtual administrative boundary of any said "city," producing a discrepancy between an area of administrative control and the real physical condition of human settlement. If there were a better formal understanding of megacities through their typological architectural conditions, then there could be a better assessment of the qualitative state of urbanization. Avant-garde groups from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s such as Team X, the Situationist, the Structuralist, and the Metabolist worked with ideas of megaforms and megastructures to address this issue. Although most of these proposals remained as paper architecture, this book reevaluates some of these ideas for the 21st-century megacity, using Seoul as a case study due to its clear typological formations produced over its diff erent periods of governance. The aim is to present the concept for an infra-architectural hybrid model of typological islands and subterranean megastructure that organizes Seoul as a flexible multi-linear city. This book will be of interest to academics and students of architecture, urban geography and Asian studies.
Origins, Imitation, Conventions
Twelve studies by eminent art historian James S. Ackerman. This collection contains studies written by art historian James Ackerman over the past decade. Whereas Ackerman's earlier work assumed a development of the arts as they responded to social, economic, political, and cultural change, his recent work reflects the poststructural critique of the presumption of progress that characterized Renaissance and modernist history and criticism. In this book he explores the tension between the authority of the past--which may act not only as a restraint but as a challenge and stimulus--and the potentially liberating gift of invention. He examines the ways in which artists and writers on art have related to ancestors and to established modes of representation, as well as to contemporary experiences. The "origins" studied here include the earliest art history and criticism; the beginnings of architectural drawing in the Middle Ages and Renaissance; Leonardo Da Vinci's sketches for churches, the first in the Renaissance to propose supporting domes on sculpted walls and piers; and the first architectural photographs. "Imitation" refers to artistic achievements that in part depended on the imitation of forms established in practices outside the fine arts, such as ancient Roman rhetoric and print media. "Conventions," like language, facilitate communication between the artist and viewer, but are both more universal (understood across cultures) and more fixed (resisting variation that might diminish their clarity). The three categories are closely linked throughout the book, as most acts of representation partake to some degree of all three.
First Additions
Like many small residential practices Cohen & Hacker Architects have made a career of doing house additions. In a practice spanning almost forty years they have evolved strategies for making additions that represent both a theoretical and philosophical position about altering older buildings. They believe that recycling existing houses, retrofitting them to meet new energy standards, preserving their embodied energy as well as their cultural significance is the most sustainable way to practice architecture. The projects included in this book seamlessly and often invisibly extend the fabric of an existing house. Cohen & Hacker's remodeled architectural interiors while respectful of the character and scale of the existing house, transform these spaces with ideas taken from modern design, creating spatially open floor plans with traditional details based on the existing architecture. To help illustrate what Cohen & Hacker describe as transformation, this book contains before and after floor plans and often exterior elevation drawings for every project. Almost every residential addition project and remodeling includes photos of new kitchens and bathrooms, a staple typical of small residential practices. From the largest to the smallest project the same care and attention to detail characterizes their work.
The Buildings of the Maltings Industry
Winner of the Association for Industrial Archaeology's Peter Neaverson Award for Outstanding Scholarship 2025The Buildings of the Malting Industry is a fascinating book on the buildings that have helped make our much loved beer over the centuries. Malt is one of the main ingredients of beer, yet the buildings in which it was and is now produced have received very little attention, although most towns and many villages had their own malthouse and kiln. This is the first book to address the paucity of detail on maltings which historically were to be found in all English counties. Today evidence for a malthouse may just be a name on a building or street. However, where they survive the pyramidal roofs clearly demonstrate the presence of a malthouse as do other less recognisable features. This book gives details of early malt kilns and shows how they changed over the centuries. Early buildings were essentially vernacular ones but by the mid-19th century some firms were using specialist architects. Then in the 20th century there was more engineering input to new maltings, in particular with the development of the pneumatic process. This once widespread industry is now mainly confined to the eastern side of the country. Elsewhere surviving maltings have been converted to other uses and examples of these are given. There are illustrations of the exteriors and interiors of malthouses and kilns which show some of the developments and how some buildings have been reused.
The British Country House Revival
British country houses have experienced a renaissance since the early 1970s. A new accord is needed today, recognising the increasingly contested contribution of country houses to British cultural life. Fifty years ago, the future for country houses in Britain looked bleak. The Victoria & Albert Museum's exhibition The Destruction of the Country House, which opened in October 1974, charted the loss of over a thousand country houses in the preceding century. The makers of the exhibition warned that history could be "about to repeat itself" because of the threats besetting mansion properties, principally from higher taxation. Houses faced the prospect of having to be stripped of their collections and sold for use as offices, hotels, or hospitals, with their parks and gardens turned into golf clubs. Government might afford to save just a handful of the most significant of these places, working in tandem with charities such as the National Trust. The rest would be consigned to history. This book traces the history of country houses in Britain, from the Destruction exhibition to the present day. The wave of country house losses anticipated in 1974 never actually happened. Instead, over the next five decades Britain's country houses experienced a renaissance. Fiscal rules changed in the mid-1970s to make it easier for owners to hold on to their assets. Economic improvements in the 1980s and 1990s allowed many houses and estates to develop profitable commercial businesses. All of this was achieved only after dedicated campaigning from heritage organisations in support of the country house cause. The book argues that a new accord is needed today, to recognise and value the ongoing, if increasingly contested, contribution of country houses to British life and culture in the twenty-first century.
Supersudaca
At the dawn of the new millennium, a group of Latin American young architects found themselves on a pilgrimage to one of the centers of design production of the old world. As pilgrims and migrants have done for thousands of years, they thought they were acquiring knowledge in exchange for their cultural currency. Instead, they encountered their own knowledge and used it to subvert the orders of center/periphery, North/South, knowledge/culture, generating new meanings and new concepts for the discipline and the practice of architecture. As you probably know, sudaca is a pejorative term used to label Latin American students in Europe. Supersudaca spins that insult around and celebrates their ways of doing Architecture. One of those ways is the Supersudaca tradition of not closing its processes; instead moving from one place to another, coming back in circles, and following unpredictable paths. Incomplete works celebrate the first two decades of this partnership and set the tone for more works to come in the future. It also resists the idea of a complete body of work, exposing the process as the frame. Edited by Fernando Lara from UPenn Weitzman School of Design, and published by Romano Guerra editora, Supersudaca - Incomplete Works is a fundamental book to understand the flow of architectural ideas from the Global South in the 21st century.
Wetlands and Construction
Wetlands and Construction: An opportunity for Berlin-Brandenburg, examines how environmentally responsible paludiculture (wetland farming) cultivation can provide a source of renewable, carbon-capturing construction materials whilst regenerating peatland landscapes. Using the Sernitzmoor area within the German state of Brandenburg as a case study, this report explores how a land practice which promotes peatland carbon capture and the decarbonisation of the construction sector could be implemented at scale to deliver climatic, ecological and economic benefits. The project aims to contribute to the development of a new architectural vernacular: one whose aesthetics are rooted in circular and bio-based principles. The research seeks to demonstrate the potency of cross-industry and interdisciplinary collaborations, and the critical urgency of addressing the conditions and health of our landscapes.

The American Porch
The former American History editor explores the creation and restoration of an essential part of a twentieth-century home's identity--the American porch. "In this delightful look at an American icon, journalist and documentary scriptwriter . . . Dolan traces the history of the porch, using this history to explore subjects such as architecture, history, slavery, colonialism, trade, anthropology, sociology, consumer behavior, and publishing." --Library Journal In 1981, Michael Dolan and his wife, Eileen O'Toole, bought a 1926 suburban bungalow in the Palisades area of Washington, DC. It was a fixer-upper and DIY project that consumed their lives for twelve years. As rooms were transformed with updated electrical wiring and plumbing, the house's porch became a storage area, rotating appliances, furniture, and construction materials as they were used and discarded. After the interior renovation was completed, Michael finally turned his attention to the porch, working with contractors to resurrect it--a reconstruction that inspired him to uncover the history of porches and their significance as a symbolic piece of Americana. "In praise of the porch: Come up and sit a spell." --USA Today "A wry, well-researched look at the place and the people who rocked, talked and courted on [the American porch] for three centuries." --Parade "The porch is making a comeback, gradually replacing its humbler rival the deck, which the traditionalist Dolan refers to as the platform shoe or leisure suit of American architecture." --Time "Dolan amply demonstrates that the porch is primarily a means of escaping the heat and, almost as important, a locus for casual social interaction." --Publishers Weekly

Urban Change and Regional Development at the Margins of Europe
Since the beginning of the 1990s, regions and urban areas have become a primary target of EU Cohesion Policy. For a number of European cities, especially in the less developed regions, this has resulted in a unique opportunity for the implementation of extensive development projects, as well as delivering innovations in urban policy and local governance.Through the detailed observation of planning processes which took place in four European cities - Porto (PT), Malaga (ES), Palermo (IT), and Thessaloniki (EL) - this book explores the different ways that EU intervention can affect the policy process locally, from the regeneration of decayed neighbourhoods and the creation of key services for improving the quality of life, to the establishment of new governance relations and increasing the institutional capacity in local government. The book also provides a critical reflection on the impact of EU urban policy in reducing regional disparities and the extent to which Cohesion Policy has helped cities to open new pathways for local development. With a special focus on the EU's marginal regions, this book is a guide to understanding how EU policy has affected urban change and local development across Europe. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Urban Research & Practice.
City of Wood
2025 J.B. Jackson Book Prize, University of Virginia Center for Cultural Landscapes 2025 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize, Association of American Geographers 2025 Abbott Lowell Cummings Award, Vernacular Architecture Forum How San Franciscans exploited natural resources such as redwood lumber to produce the first major metropolis of the American West. California's 1849 gold rush triggered creation of the "instant city" of San Francisco as a base to exploit the rich natural resources of the American West. City of Wood examines how capitalists and workers logged the state's vast redwood forests to create the financial capital and construction materials needed to build the regional metropolis of San Francisco. Architectural historian James Michael Buckley investigates the remote forest and its urban core as two poles of a regional "city." This city consisted of a far-reaching network of spaces, produced as company owners and workers arrayed men and machines to extract resources and create human commodities from the region's rich natural environment. Combining labor, urban, industrial, and social history, City of Wood employs a variety of sources--including contemporary newspaper articles, novels, and photographs--to explore the architectural landscape of lumber, from backwoods logging camps and company towns in the woods to busy lumber docks and the homes of workers and owners in San Francisco. By imagining the redwood lumber industry as a single community spread across multiple sites--a "City of Wood"--Buckley demonstrates how capitalist resource extraction links different places along the production value chain. The result is a paradigm shift in architectural history that focuses not just on the evolution of individual building design across time, but also on economic connections that link the center and periphery across space.
Health and Well-Being in Prison Design
This book establishes a new framework for the architectural design of prisons in non-repressive prison models to promote the health and well-being of all prison users.
The Religious Architecture of Alvar, Aino and Elissa Aalto
The longstanding collaboration between Aalto and the Church has previously been put down to reciprocal expediency, and the buildings perceived as spatially stirring, yet devoid of religious meaning. By analysing designs for churches, parish centres, funerary chapels and cemeteries in Finland, Denmark, Germany and Italy, this book instead reveals that Aalto's engagement with religion transcended artistic opportunism. Through a detailed analysis of the religious actors and factors that shaped the design and construction of Aalto's sacred works, as well as of previously uncovered archival material, it shows that religious influences were intrinsic and intimately related to it. The resultant buildings neither glorify nor deny institutional religion -- instead, this book argues, they challenge rigid dogmatism in religion as much as in modern architecture.
Industry 4.0 and Digitization
This book includes studies on regions, industries and tendencies of industrial change and spatial concentration of competences and industrial potentials. The chapters in this volume provide for discussions concerning a wider understanding of situations related to Industry 4.0 and digitization. It also reaches out further than towards technology and economy because it includes regional and metropolitan societies, workforces and the divergencies of effects and opportunities.Industry 4.0 and digitization are new transformations for regions and metropolises where technologies are applied but regionally can appear as a continuation of innovative processes where it is developed. The divergent presence of competences creates a selectivity process among regions. There are individual industry-location-nexuses formed out of competences of industries, labour force and research which are complemented by public policies providing support towards such adaptation of innovation and change. Regional societies formed from skilled and educated labour become an important basis for participation in innovation and supply chains. Since smart factories widely can be managed remotely, this also shows a concentration of decision making. Simultaneously, it forms a polycentric de-concentration, indicating some more important locations as central within the networks. These systematic changes continue to deepen over time. While public policies may match innovative opportunities at the appropriate moment, they also contribute to a continuation of uneven development and divergent societal tendencies. Industry 4.0 and digitization indicate a wide and selective change of organization associated with new technologies and innovation. While some regions and metropolises can continue to build both innovative competences and innovative societies based on innovative labour force, others will participate because of their position in supply chains. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal, European Planning Studies.
Regions and Regional Planning
This book addresses the making and transforming of regions and territorial organisation, which are significant activities for policy makers and planners. It focuses on the regional, intermediate scale and gathers contributions by researchers from various European universities.
Cdos in the Public Sector
This book explores the need for innovative approaches to administrative digitization, leveraging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and smart processes to meet citizens' expectations, with a particular focus on the role of Chief Digital Officers (CDOs) in driving successful digital transformations within public institutions. Administrative digitization requires fresh inputs to match the leaps seen in the industry sector, utilizing technologies like AI-driven automation, blockchain transactions, and security tools. Smart process solutions are seen as transformative in upholding service standards aligned with citizens' state expectations. Unlike commercial companies, collaboration offers those overseeing public sector digitization enhanced scaling opportunities by drawing from experiences in other regions and metropolises, directly applicable and reusable. In the public realm, digital strategies mirror legal and social conditions, necessitating adjustments and adaptation options for Chief Digital Officers as they lead digital transformation. Methodological focal points in task structure redesign, process optimization, and motivating actors yield diverse action areas for the CDO's new role in public institutions. This book explores the instruments, strategies, and attitudes necessary to successfully implement transformative initiatives in organizations, emphasizing proven concepts with practical applicability, enabling readers to derive their own interaction options as digital guidance leaders. The book is a concise introduction to the specific requirements for visionary designers driving dynamic changes in user-centric public services.

New York Global
Framed by the period of the Great Acceleration, these writings and projects represent a critical commentary on the state of architecture and urbanism and their causal role in global metamorphosis. On the eve of Plunz's status as Emeritus at Columbia University, New York Global bridges five decades of his pedagogical commitment to question the cannons of the design and urbanism fields and their relationship to the contemporary built environment. Global urbanization serves as a backdrop for a heightened consideration of the intermingling of housing, infrastructure, and pedagogy, as he negotiates the evolution of mainstream theory and praxis in architecture and planning. Through interviews, syllabi excerpts, essays, discussions, and projects, New York City is projected as a lens for understanding the potential for metropolises everywhere to serve as firewalls against dystopic social inequities and ecological adversity. In questioning the discourse surrounding urban research and action, Plunz engages with the primordial question of "urban" itself. This book is not a cautionary tale, but rather an assemblage of timestamped evidence toward understanding our current condition. Closely studying the very tools that have fostered today's environmental and societal consequences, each segment contributes to understanding engagement with a post-accelerated future.

And it was his life-long love of collecting examples of fine craftsmanship that led to the vast collection now housed at Snowshill. In this new second edition of his book, Paul Capewell tells the story of Wade's early family life, his education, and his work on Hampstead Garden Suburb - in short, his life before Snowshill.

A highly original inside look at how vision becomes reality in constructing the modern urban landscape.Building a skyscraper requires more than steel and concrete--it takes a wide array of people, each with their particular skills. In Autobiography of a Skyscraper, legendary developer Francis Greenburger offers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the construction of Chicago's 1000M tower, describing the way almost 1,000 people--from concrete workers to concierges, architects to investors--transformed an empty lot into a 74-story landmark."Real estate isn't about property; it's about people," Greenburger reflects in this book that, throughout, underscores his point. This is the story of an Italian immigrant who bet his family's entire inheritance on a hole in the ground; of window installers dancing on narrow ledges 800 feet above Michigan Avenue; of a chief concierge managing a community of 700 residents across 80,000 square feet of amenities; and of the safety manager who "babysits grown men" to keep them safe hundreds of feet in the air. These and dozens more stories turn the spotlight on the extraordinary people who brought 1000M to life and keep it running today. The story unfolds with cinematic scope--helicopter shoots for marketing renderings, midnight crane installations, the delicate negotiation of moving a 5,000-pound marble sculpture through a lobby before the revolving doors are installed. Yet it never loses sight of the human scale: the leasing agent explaining why closet space matters more than square footage, the chief engineer worried about scuff marks on hand-applied Venetian plaster, the resident finding inner peace playing Bach on the communal grand piano.Autobiography of a Skyscraper arrives at a moment when cities worldwide are grappling with questions of growth, community, and what it means to build for the future. Through the lens of one remarkable building, Greenburger and Paley have created both a paean to the collaborative spirit of urban creation and an intimate portrait of how, against all odds, a vision can become reality.

Smoky Mountain Modern
Since its inception in 1934, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has consistently ranked as the most visited national park in the United States. Many visitors approach the park through its northern entrance at the resort town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. In 1950, as the park grew more popular and demand for food and accommodations increased dramatically, an architect from Illinois, Hubert Bebb, moved to Gatlinburg to build a career that spanned three decades. During that time Bebb, and those led by his modernist vision, almost singlehandedly changed the look of the entire town. Millions of travelers slept in motels, ate in restaurants or simply admired buildings designed by Hubert Bebb. Yet most never knew about the man behind the vision or the scope of his work. This book celebrates the work of Hubert Bebb through a popular and inexpensive means of quick communication in the mid 20th century- the postcard. Enjoy a road trip back in time to once again savor the work of a master of mid-century modern design inspired by the Great Smoky Mountains.

Karl Lagerfeld
While Karl Lagerfeld was famous for being at the very center of the fashion industry for over half a century, he was equally opinionated when it came to interiors, which acted as a private creative outlet.Following an introduction by Patrick Mauri癡s, each house is introduced by a short text by Marie Kalt unveiling the history of Lagerfeld's homes while identifying key designers and pieces. From his elegant art deco-inspired apartment in Saint-Sulpice, Paris, to the incredibly ornate eighteenth-century mansion H繫tel Pozzo di Borgo, Lagerfeld's houses reveal he was a collector on a Renaissance scale as they showcase his spectacular range. Lagerfeld balanced the old with the new and moved from one atmosphere to the next, leaving a Memphis-designed apartment in Monte Carlo for a grand tour-themed Roman pied-?-terre, followed by bucolic French country houses and even a majestic Nordic villa in his native Hamburg.Presented in a large, elegant format, Karl Lagerfeld: A Life in Houses will be a rich source of inspiration for those interested in interior design and will appeal to fans of the decorative arts and the fashion designer himself.
Community Carsharing and the Social-Ecological Mobility Transition
This book investigates how practices of community carsharing are influencing everyday mobility. It argues that hegemonic practices of automobility are reconfigured through practices of community carsharing, thereby challenging capitalist mobilities in the realm of everyday life.
Sultans and Mosques
Before the Mughal style came to dominate the Islamic architecture of the Indian sub-continent, Bengal and its rulers had developed their own forms. The mosque architecture of the Independent Sultanate period (from the 14th to the 16th centuries) represents the most important element of the Islamic architecture of Bengal. This distinctive regional style drew its inspiration from the indigenous vernacular architecture of Bengal, itself heavily influenced by Hindu/Buddhist temple architecture. The early Muslim architecture of Bangladesh is an important but little studied part of the architectural heritage of the Islamic world and the Indian sub-continent. Perween Hasan's work is a most original contribution to this subject.
