Stunning contemporary houses illuminate the enduring and evolving influence of the West Coast Modern architectural style in B.C. Decades after gaining international recognition through the work of practitioners such as Arthur Erickson, Ron Thom, and Barry Downs, the West Coast Modern style remains widely celebrated and highly influential for residential architects in British Columbia and beyond, even as its expressions evolve and adapt to contemporary contexts. What are the contours of its legacy today--and has a new Cascadia regional style emerged? To explore these questions, Clinton Cuddington, co-principal of Measured Architecture, invited dozens of B.C.-based architects to share residential projects that best exemplified their design process. Their responses range from palatial mountain chalets to cabins sitting lightly in the forest to oceanfront retreats to sensitive urban renovations. The gigantic is everywhere, and gigantism is manifest in everything from excessively tall skyscrapers to globe-spanning digital networks. In this book, Henriette Steiner and Kristin Veel map and critique the trajectory of gigantism in architecture and digital culture--the convergence of tall buildings and networked infrastructures--from the Eiffel Tower to One World Trade Center. They show how these two forms of gigantism intersect in the figure of the skyscraper with a transmitting antenna on its roof, a gigantic building that is also a nodal point in a gigantic digital infrastructure.Steiner and Veel focus on two paradigmatic tower sites: the Eiffel Tower and the Twin Towers of the destroyed World Trade Center (as well as their replacement, the One World Trade Center tower). The Architects of Ottoman Constantinople

Palaces, villas and churches. These were the highlights of my first visit to Italy. I took a lot of photos and looked forward to sharing them with friends and family. Back home, though, I found that I didn't recall much about the places that impressed me. Although I had the benefit of a half-day guide in Rome, Florence and Venice, I sometimes had difficulty hearing what was said on crowded streets and busy interiors. The guides were capable but had only enough time to mention a few major features. As a rule, they skimped on actually describing buildings that intrigued me. And so they were not especially helpful in providing the insights I wanted. Upon my return, I found myself wondering: Where did the architects actually find their ideas? What did they want to accomplish? And what do their choices tell us about their time? My sojourn in Italy would have been more satisfying if I had come away with a fuller account of what I had seen. What I most needed was context. This book supplies that context. Contemplation of antiquity and the exchange of views among architects released a surge of intellectual energy not seen for a millennium, a development that would never have happened so quickly were it not for Johannes Gutenberg's invention of printing with movable type. This development, in turn, led to architects' heightened self-awareness of their collective enterprise. They read what their fellow architects wrote and thereby gained in sophistication. They were no longer merely masons. They became architects in the modern sense. They took pride in their achievements and shared a conviction that the visual culture they created was far superior to that of the previous thousand years. Their embrace of classical civilisation had a visceral urgency. Rome, after all, was a culture with a storied past, peopled by larger-than-life figures. The Postcolonial Condition of Architecture in Asia
This book provides a bidirectional investigation of Asia's spatiotemporality by asking how Asia is located and how localities are Asianized. Historical and theoretical inquiries into architecture and urbanism in order to trace a notional "common divisor" are integrated with readings of this Asian imagery. Such a common divisor is conditioned to Asia's phenomenal postcolonial subjectivation and showcases Asia's unique character. This book contends that the postcolonial condition of architecture in Asia suggests a potential and critical bridge to better understanding of the region. Theoretically, "display-ness" is a strategic and allegoric carrier that is in the focus of this book in order to emphasize the quality of display in a broader sense of time and space. Asia's architectural and urban spectacle thus is meaningly magnified and intensified with this notion of display-ness to ground the cohesive abstraction among ideological discourse production, innovative theorizations, and empirical phenomena in contemporary scholarship.
Neutra and Brazil
Richard Joseph Neutra (1892-1970), Austrian architect based in the United States, sought throughout his works to correlate modern, rationalist and industrialized architecture to particular conditions of culture, climate, landscape and technology, as well as to local resources. Richard Neutra's first contact with South America took place between October and November 1945, through a diplomatic mission entrusted to him by the US Departmentof State. The relationships that were established there ranged from the personal to the professional and lasted until the mid-1960s. Either because of the political transformations that most Latin American countries underwent at that period of time, or because of Neutra's health condition and his long stays in Germany during the last few years of his life, the fact is that these relationships emerged, flourished, and eventually withered over a period of approximately twenty years. It is safe to say, however, that they went beyond what was stipulated - and even expected - by the US government.In the specific case of Brazil, Neutra landed there for the first time in November 1945 and visited iconic projects of modern architecture, such as the headquarters of the Brazilian Reinsurance Institute and the building of the Brazilian Press Association, designed by the Roberto brothers, and the Seaplane Station, by At穩lio Correa Lima, in Rio de Janeiro; the Esther and Leonidas Moreira buildings, respectively by ?lvaro Vital Brazil and Eduardo Kneese de Mello, in S瓊o Paulo; the Grande Hotel in Ouro Preto and Oscar Niemeyer's Pampulha works, in Minas Gerais. He took pictures and made several drawings - not only of Brazilian landscapes, but of all the countries he visited.Even more important is the fact that Richard Neutra identified with the Latin American people he met. In the preface to the Spanish edition of Survival Through Design, published in Mexico in 1957, Neutra states that he felt culturally "familiar with these people who thought in Castilian" comparing the history of Argentina and Peru with that of Vienna in the post-Renaissance period. In addition to pointing out this similarity around his motherland, the architect also recalled the Spanish origins of the city that had welcomed him in 1925. This was not condescending talk from an European, based in the United States, pandering to Latin American readers; rather, this was a genuine statement from someone who understood the meaning of being the other and who identified with it.

Nobody's Home
The scourge of the monster house affects communities all across Canada, so while the Toronto neighbourhood of York Mills is not unique in this respect, it has suffered more than most, owing to the generous size of its residential lots in what has now become the centre of the city.York Mills was still a rural community until after the Second World War, when a post-war population boom created a housing boom that gobbled up the local woods and farmland. By 1960 most of this land had been sacrificed for housing, and by the mid-1970s it was all gone. Then a strange thing began to happen. Developers, who had the money to outbid legitimate home buyers, started tearing down perfectly liveable post-war homes to build monster houses. Today, over fifty years later, this destructive practice continues. The environmental costs have been devastating, as affordable houses are demolished-their remains dumped in landfills-and mature trees are cut down to facilitate the new construction: construction that demands copious amounts of wood, cement, and other new building materials. The social cost has been equally damaging, as affordable homes are destroyed and replaced by multi-million-dollar houses that are out of reach of families who once called these neighbourhoods home.The three hundred colour photos in this book recall but a fraction of the homes we have lost in this one community alone. The text tells their stories, stories that take us back to a time when houses were places to live, not get-rich-quick schemes.

He focuses on the importance of collaborating with indigenous artisans who work in age-old Mexican crafts, to create environmentally sustainable, indoor/outdoor spaces and furniture with a palette of natural materials, translated through a contemporary luxury lens. This lavish volume features sixteen of his newly built private residences in Mexico and California that show off his spectacular designs for seamless indoor and outdoor living. Notable projects include sun-drenched beach houses in Los Angeles and throughout Mexico that integrate artisanal practices, such as mosaics and patterns of hammered copper, which contribute to the local communities. At the start of any project, Farca and his team undertake a detailed bioclimatic study of a site, documenting the wind, light, and temperature conditions hour to hour and day to day. Those shifts generate the framework for layouts, form, flow, and material choices. At the Los Jales house in Jalisco sun washes deliberately across exterior walls of stucco and cast-in-place concrete, their distinctive surfaces shifting into an immersive tapestry of complementary gray tones, a tableau en grisaille. Beyond the exterior walls the unexpected awaits, be it a sublime courtyard planted with branching cacti; a seamless sweep of pool, surf, and sky; or a floating central staircase bathed in natural light. Step through the front doors and the outside world recedes as textures, surfaces, finishes, and geometries come into focus, inviting exploration and contemplation.

Sir William Chambers (1723-1796) was a Swedish-British architect with an unusual record. He designed fanciful manor house buildings and luxurious interiors as well as simple, rational works of functional architecture. After growing up in Sweden and studying in Paris and Rome, he worked mostly in England. He was a favourite of George III and was regarded the most influential architect of the late eighteenth century.Chambers was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768 and he published a number of practical as well as theoretical books on architecture, landscape and interior design. A Treatise on Civil Architecture was published in 1759 and is a handbook where Chambers explains the foundations of the art of building in a pedagogical way. Even today, it serves as an excellent guide to classical architecture with concise texts and beautiful illustrations of different kinds of buildings and their functions.2023 will mark the 300th anniversary of William Chambers' birth. This will be commemorated through this reproduction of one of his most important works, among other ways. An Archaeology of Institutional Confinement
Penny Crook's research interests include 19th-century material culture, assemblage analysis, consumer studies, urban archaeology and digital data management. She pioneered the examination of quality in historical archaeological assemblage analysis as part of her doctoral research (completed in 2008) and conducted price and linguistic analysis of data from 19th-century store catalogues. In 2014 she commenced a DECRA fellowship to extend the quality research framework and re-examine the role of consumption in colonial Sydney using archaeological assemblages.Peter Davies is a research assistant in the Department of Archaeology, Environment and Community Planning at La Trobe University. Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, Obafemi Awolowo University (Environmental Design and Management faculty), course: AFRICAN ARCHITECTURE, language: English, abstract: The use of ornamentation in buildings have been widely debated in art, architecture and related fields, with scholars such as Dmochowski (1990), Osasona and Ewemade (2011) and Adegoke (2016) arguing its role in peoples culture. However, these arguments have not adequately addressed the issue of changes in using ornamentation for decoration in ?k簷r簷d繳 residential buildings. This paper therefore, addresses the issue of building designs, with special attention to changing fa癟ade ornamentation of contemporary residential buildings in ?k簷r簷d繳, Lagos. Specifically in this paper, I will be examining the use of arches, capitals, columns, perimeter fencing and Iron gates decoration in residential buildings, in order to show that there is upsurge in adaptation and mixing of foreign influences in the contemporary residential designs. I will also discuss features and fa癟ade ornamental decoration of "IL? OL?W?" - building of the rich in ?k簷r簷d繳, Lagos State, and juxtapose it against its aesthetic contribution to the built environment, in order to reveal that there are hidden benefits for the artists who are used for creating these decorations. Using descriptive analysis and relying on field investigation, photographs, books and journals, I argue that this development, in addition to providing aesthetic satisfaction, is a way for the rich to distinguish their houses from the commoners, and to re-establish their status symbol in the society, a desire which was traditionally a preserve of royalty in most Yoruba lands. In conclusion, this paper, by closely examining fa癟ade building decoration in Ikorodu, sheds more light on the issue of art, ornamentation and architectural eclectic dynamism observable in fa癟ade of residential buildings in Ikorodu, Lagos.
Producing and living the high-rise
The purpose of the book is to assess the process of urban verticalization in different contexts through time, to provide insight into the relationships between highrise design and the way inhabitants negotiate them in their everyday lives, to assess how planners, politicians, and designers negotiate residential highrises in the strategies they develop for building the city and to introduce urban narratives and cartographies. Verticalization, although not new, currently takes place in a very different context than post-1945. Today, highrise residential buildings are more than architectural solutions: they are commodities in a global market where capital flows are fixed by developers and municipalities. Our exploration of residential verticalization is anchored in case studies, revealing different types of local-global negotiations in the design of the city, and has been framed by three interrelated dynamics: first, the complex relationships within the financialization of real estate markets, revealing differences in the types of local-global negotiations in the construction of the neo-liberal city; secondly, the most developed, anchors residential verticalization in the processes of socio-spatial differentiation within cities (mostly identified as gentrification associated to processes of urban renewal and densification; the third, related to readings and interpretations of the urban landscape and social, spatial practices and its iconographic and cartographic representations. This book is of interest to academics, students, planners, architects, and urban studies professionals. It shows that the chosen research object is an increasingly relevant angle of analysis of the contemporary city. It also provides a better knowledge of the processes of residential verticalization, their impact on the privatization of the urban space, and on urban segregation or fragmentation.
