Jean-Luc Bertini: Am矇ricaines Solitudes
A photographic study of the varied character of solitude in AmericaOver the course of a decade, French photographer Jean-Luc Bertini traveled the length and breadth of the United States, creating portraits of the unique circumstance of isolation fostered by the country's geographic circumstances and its espousal of an individualist ethos. Bertini casts his subjects against the vast backdrops of the country, exploring all the nuances of isolation, from solitude to loneliness. This perspective produces an usual and fresh take on America as a nation. In his preface, Richard Ford, author of The Sportswriter, Independence Day, The Lay of the Land and Let Me Be Frank With You, focuses on the physiognomies of solitude in America: "Looking at his work, we build up an idea of the unique character of American solitudes, in non-binary terms, in which what is ours does not only belong to us."
86 Days In Lockdown - With Photography(R)
Our official lockdown in the United Kingdom, during the Covid-19 pandemic, started on 23 March 2020 and ended on 31 May. Lockdown in our household of two started on Saturday 7 March.Powerless in a way that most had never felt before, I recognised I was in the first stages of trauma: partway between anxiety and paralysis, wanting to escape from that moment but knowing that to do so would put me at risk of impacting the effects of what was happening to me - to us all - as we faced our own mortality in isolation. I turned naturally to photography to help me - to document and create order out of my chaotic mind; to explore and diffuse my emotions. My photographs are a melange of moments with different layers of meaning. All reveal aspects during that particular period up to 31 May, when England started to relieve some restrictions. Then we started to face the realisation that the virus was here to stay; we had to adjust to a new reality with socio-economic hardships of the like that were as yet unknown to us.'For 76 of my 86 days I ran an online project for the Facebook group 'SheClicks', which currently has a membership of over 6500 female photographers from all over the globe. Some of my images in this sketchbook were the Conversation Starters that headed up my posts, written to discourage feelings of isolation by encouraging group participation; the posting and sharing of members own images for everyone to comment on."

In Your Eyes
"Seeing myself through your eyes was a small revolution for my heart." In Your Eyes is a collection of portraits - a four-year photographic journey. Contains over 140 photographic works created by Fedya Ili in 2016-2019. Fedya Ili was born in USSR in 1980. Cosmopolite (lived in Moscow, Paris, Munich, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Thailand, Kyiv, Lisbon, Saint Petersburg). Eighteen years of experience in art-direction of glossy magazines and web, interior, graphic design, brought him in 2012 to the decision -- devote himself to figurative art (fine art and photography) that was a]  changing point in his life. Exploring people's emotions in relation, studying and understanding these as part of human nature is the main issue of art. Learning from Leonardo's human body studies to Caravaggio's and Rodin's physical and emotional human state and character, to Mapplethorpe's sexuality research, he is developing these cases further.

Diesen und weiteren Themenfeldern geht der Autor in verschiedenen Essays nach und sp羹rt damit auch der Frage nach, was dies f羹r die fotojournalistische Profession bedeutet.
More Than a Rock, 2nd Edition
A deeper look at the creativity, art, expression, craft, and philosophy of landscape photography. More Than a Rock, 2nd Edition is a passionate and personal book about creativity and expression. In this series of over 70 brief essays, photographer and teacher Guy Tal shares his thoughts and experiences as an artist who seeks to express more in his images than the mere appearance of the subject portrayed. Following up on the success of the first edition, this revised edition contains updated imagery, a new essay in each of the book's four sections--Art, Craft, Experiences, and Meditations--and is presented in a beautiful hardcover format. Tal makes an argument to consider creative landscape photography--expressing something of the photographer's conception through the use of natural aesthetics--as a form of visual art that is distinct from the mere representation of beautiful natural scenes. Tal covers topics such as the art of photography, approaches to landscape photography, and the experiences of a working photographic artist. His essays also include reflections on nature and man's place in it, living a meaningful life, and living as an artist in today's world. The book is decidedly non-technical and focuses on philosophy, nature, and visual expression. It was written for those photographers with a passion and interest in creative photography. Anyone who is pursuing their work as art, is in need of inspiration, or is interested in the writings of a full-time working photographic artist will benefit from reading this book. The book is visually punctuated with Tal's inspiring and breathtaking photography. "Some images look like things, while others feel like things; some images are of things, while others are about things. A creative image is not a record of a scene nor a substitute for a real experience. Rather, it is an experience in itself--an aesthetic experience--something new that the artist has given the world, rather than a contrived view of something that already existed independent of them." --Guy Tal "The medium of photography has a long tradition of practitioners who were not only masterful photographers, but were also insightful and thoughtful writers--the thinking man's photographers. Among them we find such greats as John Szarkowski, Minor White, Bill Jay, and Robert Adams. It is no exaggeration to include Guy Tal on this esteemed list." -- From the Foreword, by Chuck Kimmerle
Following the Firstborn
Jesus is called the "firstborn" from the curse of death as he triumphantly shows us light in darkness and calls us to join him in His Kingdom as a joint heir. To do this, we must trust and follow Him through many dangers and toils as if in a foreign land, progressing as a pilgrim on the missions each of us are given. This is even if, like that of the Firstborn, they might at first appear to be impossible.Starting with this famous theme from John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, teacher Jim Ward (pictured left) uses a combination of his own poetry, photography and focused questions, together with 'backpack' resource information, to explore what it means to be a modern Christian pilgrim in today's troubled world. Following the Firstborn provides strong stimulus and guidance for personal reflection on what matters most on our journey through life, but it is also a powerful springboard for group study and discussion of how we remain a faithful pilgrim in what C S Lewis has called 'enemy occupied territory'.
The Photographic Uncanny
This book argues for a renewed understanding of the fundamentally uncanny quality of the medium of photography. It especially makes the case for the capacity of certain photographs--precisely through their uncanniness--to contest structures of political and social dominance. The uncanny as a quality that unsettles the perception of home emerges as a symptom of modern and contemporary society and also as an aesthetic apparatus by which some key photographs critique the hegemony of capitalist and industrialist domains. The book's historical scope is large, beginning with William Henry Fox Talbot and closing with contemporary indigenous photographer Bear Allison and contemporary African American photographer Devin Allen. Through close readings, exegesis, of individual photographs and careful deployment of contemporary political and aesthetic theory, The Photographic Uncanny argues for a re-envisioning of the political capacity of photography to expose the haunted, homeless, condition of modernity.
The National Parks
Poets Karla K. Morton and Alan Birkelbach began this journey to celebrate our national parks' one hundredth anniversary, but for these two poets the sojourns quickly became something greater than that. In their words, "As humans we have this tendency to look at a piece of land and see real estate. [But] when concrete covers all our natural spaces, not only do we lose earth's creatures, we also lose the great teacher of our souls. You cannot sit beneath trees taller than the Statue of Liberty, or gaze upon vistas untouched since their creation, without feeling the awe and wonder of what the natural world has to offer. You cannot experience such beauty without being wholly changed. Our great-great-great-grandchildren deserve these untouched gifts."This journey, illustrated with gorgeous color photos of all of America's grand national parks, is a feast for the eyes and heart. In the end, it is a plea for us to save these wonders for all future generations.

Delia’s Tears
In 1850 seven South Carolina slaves were photographed at the request of the famous naturalist Louis Agassiz to provide evidence of the supposed biological inferiority of Africans. Lost for many years, the photographs were rediscovered in the attic of Harvard's Peabody Museum in 1976. In the first narrative history of these images, Molly Rogers tells the story of the photographs, the people they depict, and the men who made and used them. Weaving together the histories of race, science, and photography in nineteenth-century America, Rogers explores the invention and uses of photography, the scientific theories the images were intended to support and how these related to the race politics of the time, the meanings that may have been found in the photographs, and the possible reasons why they were "lost" for a century or more. Each image is accompanied by a brief fictional vignette about the subject's life as imagined by Rogers; these portraits bring the seven subjects to life, adding a fascinating human dimension to the historical material.

Dur矇e.
Hiroshi Sugimoto selbst gibt als 羹bergeordnetes Thema drei seiner Fotoserien "Time Exposed" an, also belichtete Zeit. Die Frage, die es zu kl瓣ren gilt, lautet: Wie kann mittels belichteter Zeit erlebte Zeit erfahrbar gemacht werden?
Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947-2019
The bookmaker photographer: 30 years of Robert Frank's collaborations with SteidlExploring Robert Frank's rich bookmaking history with Steidl, and featuring spreads and explanatory texts from the more than 30 books that Frank published with Steidl, along with interviews, essays and documentary photos, Books and Films, 1947-2019 is a tribute to Frank's diverse and influential bookmaking practice. Gerhard Steidl began working with Robert Frank in 1989, when Swiss publisher Walter Keller asked him to print Frank's The Lines of My Hand for his imprint Scalo: "You'll both get along well on press," Keller had said. And so Robert Frank traveled to Steidl at D羹stere Strasse 4 in G繹ttingen for the first of many visits, to be on press and sign off each printed sheet. After Scalo closed its doors in 2004, Steidl started to publish as well as print Frank's books, beginning a long-term working friendship that encompassed every aspect of Frank's creativity--from reprints of his classic and some lesser-known books (The Americans, Zero Mostel Reads a Book) and the publication of previously unseen projects (Seven Stories) to newly conceived volumes (Tal Uf Tal Ab, Good Days Quiet), as well as his complete films on DVD (Film Works). In Gerhard Steidl's words: "Our aim has been to ensure the legacy of this original and seminal artist and that his work will be available and accessible for years to come--all in a form and to a standard that Robert personally oversaw."

Mitch Epstein: Property Rights
Who owns the land, by whose authority, and with what rights? Mitch Epstein examines the American government's ongoing legacy of property confiscation, and how communities gather to resistA New York Times Book Review 2021 holiday gift guide pick Epstein began his latest series in 2017 at Standing Rock, where thousands protested the installation of the Dakota Access Pipeline on Sioux land. Over four years, he charted other contested lands from Pennsylvania and Hawaii to the Mexican border, as well as land loss through wildfires and flooding due to egregious environmental negligence. In keeping with Epstein's 50-year exploration of American life, Property Rights questions the relationship between institutions, civil rights and the rights of nature itself. Acknowledging our bodies and lives as our most fundamental property, the book examines other forms of trespass and destruction in an elegy to the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre, and in photographs of Black Lives Matter protests during COVID-19. Property Rights includes the voices of activists Epstein interviewed while making this deeply personal and political work. In a time of alarming division, the book describes diverse communities in a common fight against politicians and plutocrats willing to sacrifice the people's well-being. A pioneer of 1970s art photography, Mitch Epstein (born 1952) has photographed the landscape and psyche of America for half a century. Numerous collections hold his work, including the Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern; in 2013, the Walker Art Center commissioned a theatrical rendition of his American Power series. Epstein has described the cultural and physical evolution of the United States from 1973 to 2019 in his Steidl books Family Business (2003), Recreation (2005), American Power (2011), New York Arbor (2013), Rocks and Clouds (2017) and Sunshine Hotel (2019).

Portrait FeverTaikang Photography Collection
"...a significant contribution to the study of Chinese photography." - The Art Newspaper From political leaders to celebrities, photographic portraits exert considerable influence over our reaction to public figures. Taikang Space is one of the most important non-profit art institutions in China. Based in Beijing, they focus on contemporary art and photography. The Chinese Portrait: 1860 to the Present also features the curator's interviews with Qia Sijie, Chen Shilin and Zhang Zuo - respectively the personal photographer, standard portrait re-toucher and darkroom technician of Chairman Mao.
Taryn Simon: The Innocents
The fallibility of the criminal legal system and the duplicity of the image: Taryn Simon's acclaimed and beautifully produced first book, available in an expanded edition with previously unpublished images, essays and archival materialTaryn Simon's earliest body of work, The Innocents (2003), documents stories of individuals who were incarcerated for violent crimes they did not commit. The project stands as a photographic record of some of the earliest DNA-based exonerations in the United States and as a searing indictment of America's criminal legal system. The Innocents interrogates photography's credibility as an arbiter of justice. People suspected of committing crimes are identified through photographs and lineups, a procedure that relies on the assumption of precise visual memory. But through exposure to composite sketches, mug shots, Polaroids and lineups, eyewitness memory can change. In the cases in this book, photography aided in convicting and imprisoning people for crimes they did not commit. The Innocents compiles Simon's photographs of 46 individuals at sites that had particular significance to their convictions: the scene of the crime, misidentification, arrest or alibi. This expanded edition includes previously unpublished images; a new introduction by Innocence Project cofounders Peter J. Neufeld and Barry C. Scheck; a new essay by professor and curator Nicole R. Fleetwood based on a conversation with criminal legal and social justice activist Tyra Patterson; as well as police reports, court transcripts and correspondence detailing the procedures behind many of the misidentifications and wrongful convictions in this book.

Embalmed Time
What is a photographic image, a painting or a sculpture other than a way to capture the viewer's attention? The author has hopefully seen something in her environment that she wants to draw the viewer's attention to. The photographic image can, in other words, be said to be a trap for our gaze. These traps may be more or less effective, the viewer must work with this trap in order for it to work. This is because we cannot see something in an image that we have not already seen or we cannot see something that we have not already have been able to imagine. If another person may think the content, there is a possibility that the viewer can also see it. This book contains some thinking about what a photographic image really is in a couple of essays.

Rain in Our Hearts
With words and photographs, Rain in Our Hearts takes readers into Alpha Company, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, 196th LIB, Americal Division in 1969-1970. Jim Logue, a professional photographer, was drafted and served as an infantryman; he also carried a camera. "In order to take my mind off the war," he would say, "I took pictures." Logue's photos showcase the daily lives of infantrymen: setting up a night laager, chatting with local children, making supply drops, and "humping" rucksacks miles each day in search of the enemy. His camera records the individual experiences and daily lives of the men who fought the war. Accompanying Logue's over 100 photographs is the narrative written by Gary D. Ford. Wanting to reconstruct the story of Alpha Company during the time in which Logue served, Ford and Logue trekked across America to meet with and interview every surviving member whom they could locate and contact. Each chapter of Rain in Our Hearts focuses on the viewpoint and life of one member of Alpha Company, including aspects of life before and after Vietnam. The story of the Company's movements and missions over the year unfold as readers are introduced to one soldier at a time. Taken together, Rain in Our Hearts offers readers a window into the words and sights of Alpha Company's Vietnam War.

Orangeville Ontario Beginnings in Photos
John Corbit acquired land in the area in 1829 and is one of the earliest settlers. Spring Brook (also called Mill Creek), a tributary of the Credit River, provided water for power for several mills located downstream. Seneca Ketchum and George Grigg arrived soon after. By 1844 when Orange Lawrence and his wife Sarah arrived from Connecticut, a well-established community called Grigg's Mill existed beside Mill Creek.Orange Lawrence helped to develop the community, laying out the southeast part of town; he opened a general store and a tavern, built a second mill, founded the first school, and became the village's first postmaster in 1847. He left a strong mark on the community which took the appropriate name of Orangeville.Immigrants from Ireland and other parts of the British Isles and Canada West came throughout the 1840s and 1850s with some establishing successful mixed farms while others settled in the village and became the landowners, merchants, and tradesmen whose needs led to the development of good transportation routes. By the 1860s it was increasingly difficult to deliver and receive goods to and from the supply centres in the south with gravel roads that were difficult to traverse by horse and wagon for much of the year. Winter was the season when most goods were transported by sleigh over frozen roads.By 1871 two daily stage lines were operating between Orangeville and Brampton, and that year the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway reached Orangeville, thanks to the efforts of the town fathers such as Jesse Ketchum Jr., Samuel and Robert McKitrick, Johnston Lindsey, Thomas Jull, John Foley, and R. William Armstrong.By 1875 there was a foundry, three planning mills, two saw mills, a tannery, a carding mill, several carriage and wagon manufacturers, and a successful pottery business in operation, along with four grocers, three hardware merchants, two drugstores, three watchmakers, three bakeries, and three establishment proving boots and shoes. It was the foresight of Orange Lawrence and Jesse Ketchum that had large sections of land on either side of the main street laid out for both commercial and residential building lots. The south side followed Mill creek while a regular grid pattern was determined for the streets on the north side from first to Fifty Streets both east and west and north to Fifth Avenue, with a wide main street called Broadway. This 30-metre (100-foot) avenue was not typical of Ontario towns of the time but has proven to be very valuable over the years. In 1875 the Town Hall was construction, and in 1887 the first telephone exchange was established.Orangeville is proud of its roots and seeks to preserve its heritage. With two of our children and five grandchildren living in Orangeville, we often make the trek to the town. I have walked and driven the streets of Orangeville discovering its beauty. There are hundreds of old buildings which have retained their 1800s architectural styles and character. As a result, I have divided the pictures into two books. The first book covers the beginnings of Orangeville with pictures from the south side of town, and buildings on Broadway. An appendix is included to describe architectural styles and terms which are referred to throughout the book. The second book covers buildings to the north of the town, as well as pictures taken in surrounding villages of Laurel, Caledon Village and Mono Centre.

Hanoi
If Hanoi could be summed up in four words it would be 'old, new, cool and authentic'. The city seamlessly blends ancient history and culture with modern trends and style. It has an energy, a unique way of life, something people can see and experience through its architecture, traditions, foods and streetlife. This book reflects on the changes Hanoi has seen in recent decades, it displays how the city and its people both revere the past whilst embracing a modern future. As a long-term resident of Hanoi, I am proud to present a selection of photographs complete with concise but in-depth information that capture Hanoi's past, present and future. I hope these images allow readers to grow a deeper understanding and appreciation of this incredible city. Ross DeversonPhotographerwww.rossd.photography
Photography in the Modern Era
The decade between the world wars witnessed an astonishing flowering of photography in Europe-- marked particularly by the unprecedented work of such figures as Man Ray, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Alexander Rodchenko. Alongside the visual experiments ran a fascinating public discussion in which critics, artists, and the photographers themselves struggled to define the nature and possibilities of photography in the modern era. The seventy-one essays and documents collected in this book provide a concise, provocative introduction to the ideas and personalities that animated avant-garde photography during these years of artistic ferment and that continue to influence the medium today. By turns poetic, analytical, and fiercely ideological, these diverse writings give expression to a very wide range of original ideas. Moholy-Nagy calls on photographers to create a powerful abstract vision that will transform our ability to see. Albert Renger-Patzsch argues for a quite different goal, a photography of revelatory realism that lays bare the essence of the subject before the lens. The French writer Pierre Mac Orlan explores psychologically compelling notions: that photography realizes "all that is curiously inhuman" and "creates death for a second." Photography is widely characterized as a modern machine-age art that supersedes the traditional fine arts. In the Soviet Union an extraordinary interchange pits the avant-gardist Rodchenko against opponents who insist that social usefulness is photography's primary responsibility. While shedding important new light on the directions taken by photography during the twentieth century, these essays also illuminate such major movements as Futurism, Constructivism, Surrealism, and the New Objectivity. Most of the selections were not previously available in English and have been translated especially for this volume. Each appears with an informative headnote by Christopher Phillips, who in an introductory essay provides a lucid overview of the period and the context in which the writings first appeared. With its wealth of new material, this collection is an essential resource for all those studying photography or seeking to understand the visual culture of this century. This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition "The New Vision: Photography Between the World Wars, Ford Motor Company Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art," held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, September 23-December 31, 1989.
Gary Schneider: Nudes
In this previously unpublished body of work, Gary Schneider presents a haunting series of nudes and faces that emerge and seem to float above a receding black ground. Each image is rendered through a long exposure and by exploring the surfaces of the skin with a small handheld light. Due to the prolonged time required and the inevitable movements and consequent distortions that occur in the process, the results both reveal and obscure the intimate physical details and personality of the individual who poses. The sensibility and the obsessions of the artist are reflected by his decisions to expose certain areas more than others. The skin-tones are lush and luminous as they emerge from the darkness, yet these portraits also disturb as a result of the exaggerations and irregularities--the blurred traces of unconscious gesture matched with a stiffness that implies the innate physicality and mortality within each body.
Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick: Scotlandfuturebog
In "Scotlandfuturebog," photographers Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick construct a strange world that they describe as being of "infinite promise that cannot possibly be described or communicated except by direct experience." The characters we meet are bogdwellers, inhabitants of a planet emptied by an apocalyptic event. Left to perform obscure ceremonies in an intriguing but uninviting terrain, the bogdwellers exist in a historical vacuum. This is a first-edition slip-cased book, signed and numbered by the artists.Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick have been collaborating for more than a decade. They have exhibited worldwide and their work is held in galleries, museums and private collections.Scotlandfuturebog features a short story by Ben Marcus whose second novel, "Notable American Women," was published in 2002 by Vintage.

Mount Forest Ontario in Photos
Mount Forest, Ontario is the subject of Book 9 in the Cruising Ontario series of books of photographs of towns and cities in Ontario. The photos show the architecture and design of old buildings, many that are over 100 years old. Sometimes there are descriptions of the buildings and some background information, but mostly it is a visual experience to enjoy. Mount Forest is a town we have often travelled through. In the summer of 2012, we took the time to get to know the town a little and to enjoy the architecture of some of the homes and buildings there.

From My Grandmother’s Heart
She never believed I was listening...she was mistaken. During my youth, my grandmother was one of the few people I gave my full attention to. From her stories and poems, I learned the true meaning of love, faith and hope. Now I share with you her wisdom in hopes that you too can find inspiration in my photography and in the poems FROM MY GRANDMOTHER'S HEART.
