Murray Korman
Murray Korman's meteoric rise to fame and fortune was equaled only by his rapid fall into relative obscurity. A budding artist in the early years of the 20th century, by the 1930s Korman turned to the camera as his primary tool for artistic expression. Through talent and determination, he eventually owned two of the most prosperous studios in New York City and was labeled by The New Yorker Magazine as "The One Big Name." But poor business management combined with competition and the shifting sands of the New York fashion scene sent Korman's career into a tailspin. After a brief attempt to jump-start his photography business in California, he returned to New York where he died in 1961, poor, alone, and his massive portfolio scattered and virtually forgotten.

For the Love of Mountains
A whim to experience outdoor life sparked a life-changing experience and a new love affair, a love for the mountains. More than a travelogue, I have relived each of my favorite mountain haunts visually in this book. Every picture and every day in the mountains have a story behind it. These stories include the local people, whose guests we were, friends, and yours truly. I have trekked many of these trails multiple times, hence some of them have more pictures than others. These visits in the last 11 years have transformed me from an introvert to an extrovert, a weakling with a bad back (three slipped discs) to a fit 50-year-old. I became a better photographer and a better traveler over time and this is reflected in the quality of pictures as well. I often tell my friends that a week of hiking in the mountains is equivalent to a lifetime of memories. And I have plenty of them to share in this photo book.

The Pink Ink Review is the literary magazine of Stephanie Josiah's Creative Writing Workshops. This particular issue, SUMMER 2020, was written, illustrated, and includes photographs by The Web Weaver's Society. They were making serious money and splashing out on new homes and cars. Their official photographer and friend, Gered Mankowitz, was invited to shoot an "at home" session with each member of the band. "They hated the idea of unknown photographers visiting their private sanctuaries ... If I did it then the press office would have a large selection of this type of image and could fulfil any magazine request without having to bother the band." Mankowitz kept these photographs in supermarket carrier bags stashed under his desk for several years, "getting in my way and frequently wondering why I continued to hold on to them." Chandoha, Dogs
The world appears to be divided into cat and dog lovers, but fortunately Walter Chandoha, the 20th century's greatest pet photographer found himself happily in the middle. He loved these intriguing creatures equally for their unique beauty and individualism, and as subjects to photograph in a career spanning over 70 years. While working on his critically acclaimed TASCHEN book Cats, Chandoha handpicked his favorite dog photos for a potential follow-up title, putting into carefully marked boxes hundreds of contact sheets, prints, and color transparencies, many unseen for at least 50 years, and some totally unseen. Chandoha sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 98, but his legacy lives on in this dashing sequel dedicated to man's best friend. Skiing Sun Valley
Union Pacific Railroad's Averell Harriman had a bold vision to restore rail passenger traffic decimated by the Great Depression: create ski tourism in Idaho's remote Wood River Valley. A $1.5 million investment opened Sun Valley in December 1936 with a lavish lodge, luxury shopping, Austrian ski instructors and extensive backcountry skiing. Prestigious tournaments featured the world's best skiers. Chairlifts invented by Union Pacific engineers serviced skiers quickly and comfortably. Ski instructor and filmmaker Otto Lang recalled that seemingly overnight, it became "a magnet for the 'beautiful people, ' a meeting place for movie stars and moguls, chairmen and captains of industry, Greek shipping tycoons, and peripatetic playboys--and playgirls--of the international social set." After World War II and Harriman's departure, Union Pacific's willingness to pay the $500,000 yearly subsidy waned. Bill Janss purchased it in 1964 and reimagined it as a year-round resort but lacked the capital for growth. Sinclair Oil owners Earl and Carol Holding acquired it in 1977, revitalizing it into a premier resort with international status. Award-winning ski historian John W. Lundin celebrates America's first destination ski resort using unpublished Union Pacific documents, oral histories, contemporaneous accounts and more than 150 historic images.
Photo Poetics
Chinese poetry has a long history of interaction with the visual arts. Classical aesthetic thought held that painting, calligraphy, and poetry were cross-fertilizing and mutually enriching. What happened when the Chinese poetic tradition encountered photography, a transformative technology and presumably realistic medium that reshaped seeing and representing the world?Shengqing Wu explores how the new medium of photography was transformed by Chinese aesthetic culture. She details the complex negotiations between poetry and photography in the late Qing and early Republican eras, examining the ways traditional textual forms collaborated with the new visual culture. Drawing on extensive archival research into illustrated magazines, poetry collections, and vintage photographs, Photo Poetics analyzes a wide range of practices and genres, including self-representation in portrait photography; gifts of inscribed photographs; mass-media circulation of images of beautiful women; and photography of ghosts, immortals, and imagined landscapes. Wu argues that the Chinese lyrical tradition provided rich resources for artistic creativity, self-expression, and embodied experience in the face of an increasingly technological and image-oriented society. An interdisciplinary study spanning literary studies, visual culture, and media history, Photo Poetics is an original account of media culture in early twentieth-century China and the formation of Chinese literary and visual modernities.
Unseeing Empire
In Unseeing Empire Bakirathi Mani examines how empire continues to haunt South Asian American visual cultures. Weaving close readings of fine art together with archival research and ethnographic fieldwork at museums and galleries across South Asia and North America, Mani outlines the visual and affective relationships between South Asian diasporic artists, their photographic work, and their viewers. She notes that the desire for South Asian Americans to see visual representations of themselves is rooted in the use of photography as a form of colonial documentation and surveillance. She examines fine art photography by South Asian diasporic artists who employ aesthetic strategies such as duplication and alteration that run counter to viewers' demands for greater visibility. These works fail to deliver on viewers' desires to see themselves, producing instead feelings of alienation, estrangement, and loss. These feelings, Mani contends, allow viewers to question their own visibility as South Asian Americans in U.S. public culture and to reflect on their desires to be represented.

Dabei stellen sich Fragen, wie: Welche Bildmotive w瓣hlte er? Wie arrangierte er diese im Layout der Zeitschrift? Welche Bedeutung haben die Texte f羹r das Gesamtbild? Wie waren die Reaktionen der vom Inhalt der Reportage vermutlich stark distanzierten Leserschaft der Life? Der Fokus dieser Arbeit liegt auf der Analyse der Reportage von 1970, wobei der historische Kontext der vorangegangenen Jahrzehnte sowohl in Bezug auf Protestbewegungen von Afroamerikaner*innen als auch auf die Repr瓣sentation derselben in den Medien miteinbezogen wird. Die Repr瓣sentation Schwarzer in Gordon Parks' Fotoreportage kann hier im wissenschaftlichen Rahmen betrachtet werden und mit seinen eigenen Aussagen und denen anderer Afroamerikaner*innen in Verbindung gebracht werden, was ein tieferes Verst瓣ndnis der Problematik und somit auch der M繹glichkeiten zur Besserung erlaubt. The bikes are there. On any street, in any corner. They rest in the park, rust in the rain, take the worker to the factory, contort under the acrobat, climb mountains, or break speed records. Each one has a story, and if the camera peeks out, we can learn a little about them. About their relationship with whoever rides them, about how the passage of time affects them, about how they lose their balance. "Two wheels, One click" is a book that was created on the streets of various cities around the world. When the two eyes of a journalist who were away from his job met with the two wheels that lighten the pace of the people. A few dozen bicycles from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Mayapur were chosen for this volume. Dozens of bicycles that say something about the culture of each of these Asian cities, so close, so different.
