Enhancing Irbesartan Bioavailability via Solid Dispersion
Hypertension is a prevalent condition, especially in those over 50, and can lead to severe cardiovascular complications. Irbesartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), is commonly used to manage hypertension, but its low aqueous solubility (1 μg/ml) limits its bioavailability. This study aimed to improve Irbesartan's solubility through solid dispersions using carriers like β-cyclodextrin, HPMC K4M, PEG4000, and Gelatin. β-cyclodextrin showed the greatest enhancement in solubility, as confirmed by phase solubility studies. Characterization through DSC and SEM indicated the drug's transformation from crystalline to amorphous form, improving dissolution. FTIR studies confirmed no interaction between the drug and carriers. In vitro dissolution tests revealed that β-cyclodextrin (1:9) formulations significantly increased the dissolution rate compared to pure Irbesartan and other carriers. Thus, using β-cyclodextrin in solid dispersions effectively enhances Irbesartan's solubility and therapeutic potential in treating hypertension.

Alcohol, Drugs, and Impaired Driving
Alcohol, Drugs, and Impaired Driving addresses many theoretical and practical issues related to the role played by alcohol and other psychoactive drugs on driving performance, road-traffic safety, and public health. Several key forensic issues are involved in the enforcement of laws regulating driving under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs, including analytical toxicology, pharmacology of drug action, as well as the relationships between dose taken, concentration levels in the body, and impairment of performance and behavior. Our knowledge of drunken driving is much more comprehensive than drugged driving, so a large part of this book is devoted to alcohol impairment, as well as impairment caused by use of drugs other than alcohol. For convenience, the book is divided into four main sections. The first section gives some historical background about measuring alcohol in blood and breath as evidence for the prosecution of traffic offenders. The important role of the Breathalyzer instrument in traffic-law enforcement, especially in Australia, Canada, and the USA is presented along with a biographical sketch of its inventor (Professor Robert F. Borkenstein of Indiana University) with focus on the man, his work and his impact. The second section discusses several issues related to forensic blood and breath-alcohol alcohol analysis as evidence for prosecution of traffic offenders. This includes how the results should be interpreted in relation to impairment and an evaluation of common defense challenges. Because most countries have adopted concentration per se laws, the main thrust of the prosecution case is the suspect's measured blood- or breath-alcohol concentration. This legal framework necessitates that the analytical methods used are "fit for purpose" and are subjected to rigorous quality assurance procedures. The third section gives a broad overview of the current state of knowledge about driving under the influence of non-alcohol drugs in various countries. This includes adoption of zero-tolerance laws, concentration per se statutes, and clinical evidence of driver impairment based on field sobriety tests and drug recognition expert evidence. The fourth section deals with epidemiology, enforcement, and countermeasures aimed at reducing the threat of drunken and drugged driving. All articles have appeared previously in the international journal Forensic Science Review, but all are completely updated with current data, references, and the latest research on developments since the articles were published. This book contains a convenient collection of the best articles covering recommendations for blood and breath testing methods, public policy relating to such methods, and forensic and legal implications of the enforcement of measures to counter driving under the influence.

Dietary Components and Immune Function
Each stage of the body's immune response relies on the presence of nutrients. The energy and nutrient needs of the immune system can be met from exogenous diets. Dietary components can influence the development and maintenance of the immune system or play a very specific role in reducing chronic inflammation. The healthy diet regulates the fine balance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators and immune cells to help the immune system fight infection. They can also protect our bodies from harmful autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases or cancer, and fetal infection following cancer or before harmful autoimmune diseases. In contrast, malnutrition or excessive intake of micronutrients can impair immune function. For example, iron supplementation will increase morbidity and mortality in those in malaria-endemic regions. Researchers have always had many questions about nutrition and the immune system: How can different dietary components effectively treat immune deficiencies associated with inadequate intake? Can specific nutritional interventions further enhance immune function in subclinical settings to prevent inflammatory disease infection or chronic disease? The authors of papers included in this Special Issue shared some valuable knowledge, including but not limited to research on different dietary components related to the immune system. Ultimately, we hope that this reprint will be useful for clinical practitioners and inspire further innovative research.

Healthy Nutrition as the Key Reference in Special Diets, Quality of Life, and Sustainability
Eating is about how we relate to food in various contexts, and it is influenced by difficult choices that take into account biological, social, cultural, economic, psychological, and access-to-food-related aspects. As a result, eating decisions go beyond basic physiological and nutritional requirements. They may occasionally be conscious, but they can also be automatic, habitual, or subconscious. In these ways, eating is a complicated amalgam of ingrained habits, social norms, and acquired attitudes and feelings toward food. Despite being a long-standing international human right, not everyone has access to enough food. As a result, this reprint seeks original research studies and reviews on the following topics: special diets; dietary restrictions; dietary patterns; gluten-free diets; sugar restriction; salt restriction; vegan diets; vegetarian diets; quality of life; and sustainability.
Spinal Cord Injuries
Spinal cord injury is a catastrophic injury affecting all body functions and imposing significant life-long impairment. Advances in spinal cord injury rehabilitation are required to ensure optimal physical and psychological adjustments to its impacts, and make sure that quality of life and life expectancy improve. This Special Issue consisting of a collection of research papers fulfils a vital strategy for achieving improvements after spinal cord injury. The papers are innovative, and each paper proposes features that will result, it is hoped, in real advances in rehabilitation. The range of topics is broad, ranging from psychological to physiological approaches. For example, exploring cognitive reserve and its association to cognitive impairment, the benefits of electrical stimulation to mobility function and autonomic dysreflexia, machine learning for the early prediction of pressure ulcers and robot-assisted gait training, investigating activity-based therapy for mobility, function and quality of life, and studying hypnosis-enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy for pain in a ventilator-dependent patient. These are all outstanding contributions. The Editors hope you enjoy reading these outstanding contributions to spinal cord injury rehabilitation research.
Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Intervention Strategies for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease
This reprint provides insights into the cardiovascular risk landscape, emphasizing the impact of major risk factors and their interaction with the cardiovascular system. In this Special Issue, the role of other less established risk factors such as uric acid, sleep disorders, or blood pressure variability has been taken into consideration. Evidence-based strategies to prevent the detrimental consequences of these risk factors have been focused on in this Special Issue, with particular emphasis on glycemic control, lipid management, hypertension diagnosis, blood pressure regulation, and implementation of lifestyle modifications. By implementing the most modern strategies and fostering collaboration across disciplines, we can reduce the cardiovascular risk, thereby avoiding adverse outcomes.
