Volatility and Growth
It has long been recognized that productivity growth and the business cycle are closely interrelated. Yet, until recently, the two phenomena have been investigated separately in the economics literature. This book provides the first consistent attempt to analyze the effects of macroeconomic volatility on productivity growth, and also the reverse causality from growth to business cycles. The authors show that by looking at the economy through the lens of private entrepreneurs, who invest under credit constraints, one can go some way towards explaining persistent macroeconomic volatility and the effects of volatility on growth. Beginning with an analysis of the effects of volatility on growth, the authors argue that the lower the level of financial development in a country the more detrimental the effect of volatility on growth. This prediction is confirmed by cross-country panel regressions. The data also suggests that a fixed exchange rate regime or more countercyclical budgetary policies are growth-enhancing in countries with a lower level of financial development. The former reduce aggregate volatility whereas the latter reduce the negative effects of volatility on long-term productivity-enhancing investment by firms. The book concludes with an investigation into how the interplay between credit constraints and pecuniary externalities is sufficient to generate persistent business cycles and to explain the occurrence of currency crises.

Conflicting Counsels to Confuse the Age translates and analyzes thirty-eight memorials to the throne and other Qing documents dealing with important issues of Chinese political economy, providing thoughtful and provocative commentary. Subjects covered by the texts include water control, mining, grain trade, pawnshops, brewing, and commercial shipping. The documents also contain detailed discussions of how the state should control wealth, self-interest, profit, hoarding, and the market. In translating these primary sources, Helen Dunstan invites fellow specialists in Chinese studies, including Qing historians, to watch Qing officials and others thinking through problems of political economy and developing arguments to persuade colleagues or superiors. By emphasizing their rhetorical nature and genre conventions, Dunstan offers a reminder that it is improper to use the "information" in such texts without attention to the author's purpose, and without grasping the rhetorical structure of the text as a whole. As a model for close reading, Conflicting Counsels aims to induce greater sensitivity to the nature of Qing records.The second purpose of Conflicting Counsels is to help dispel the notion that economic liberalism is necessarily a Western, "modern" phenomenon. Many of the texts translated record areas of tension and controversy in eighteenth-century approaches to a central project of Confucian paternalist administration, "nourishing the people" (yangmin). Although Dunstan attempts to present both sides fairly, some materials included present the opinion that, in certain vital matters, it was better for the state to stand aside, and leave society's own economic institutions, trade in particular, to handle things. While not a majority, the texts that build some kind of market mechanism argument should be of greatest interest to Qing historians.

Financial Analysis of the Airlines Qantas and Virgin Australia (2015 to 2017)

An analysis of the airlines' financial performance in the period 2015, 2016 and 2017 is presented in this report. The report begins with a short introduction into the dynamics of the airlines under review. The basis of financial analysis is discussed, where the six key financial analysis parameters (profitability, efficiency, liquidity, gearing, horizontal analysis and vertical analysis) are introduced, explained and summarized separately, for each airline. Qantas fulfilled all criteria for a stable airline except in gearing and liquidity analysis whereas Virgin Australia fell short in profitability and efficiency. A comparative analysis is provided where the performance of both Qantas and Virgin Australia is closely studied. A business performance review specific to Qantas is presented with a focus on both financial and non-financial aspects. A conclusion is provided which details out the major findings which are a by-product of the analysis. Lastly, few recommendations are provided based on the summarized conclusion which is of financial and non-financial nature. Qantas was found to be highly profitable in this review period. Virgin Australia meanwhile suffered significant losses and was in the recovery stage at the end of the analysis period.

The Environment and Externality
This innovative book models pollution mitigation as a negative externality whilst also providing desirable and useful solutions, such as establishing the triangular equivalence relationship among the Lindahl equilibrium without transfers, the Nash bargaining solution with the payoffs of the Cournot-Nash equilibrium as the status quo point, and the social optimum under the Lindahl weights. Es l瓣sst sich der Schluss ziehen, dass mit einer gut ausgebauten Bankenaufsicht sowie einer Marktdisziplinierung der Banken die stabilisierenden Aspekte 羹berwiegen. Die j羹ngste Finanzkrise hat bewiesen, wie wichtig die Einf羹hrung einer Europ瓣ischen Bankenunion als Erg瓣nzung zur Europ瓣ischen Wirtschafts- und W瓣hrungsunion ist. Mit dem einheitlichen Aufsichts- und Abwicklungsmechanismus wurden die ersten beiden S瓣ulen der Bankenunion bereits umgesetzt. Angelehnt an den Vorschlag der Europ瓣ischen Kommission soll eine einheitliche Einlagensicherung diese abschlie?en. Es ist jedoch umstritten, ob ein EU-weiter Charakter stabilisierende oder destabilisierende Auswirkungen auf die Finanzm瓣rkte hat. W瓣hrend das Vertrauen der AnlegerInnen gest瓣rkt und Bank Runs verhindert werden k繹nnen, bietet sie zugleich einen Anreiz f羹r Moral-Hazard-Verhalten und sinkende Marktdisziplin. Es wird ein Modell von Diamond und Dybvig (1983) vorgestellt. Dieses erl瓣utert, wie Bank Runs (dt. Bankansturm) zustande kommen und warum sich eine EU-weite Einlagensicherung positiv auf diese auswirkt. Zum anderen wird ein Modell von Gropp und Vesala (2004) betrachtet, das die Gr羹nde von Moral-Hazard-Verhalten erkl瓣rt und zugleich Bedingungen erl瓣utert, unter denen eine explizite Einlagensicherung dieses Verhalten reduziert. Throughout the history of mankind, the rise of societies, whether civilizations, nations, or communities, has been a story of human achievement. From the rise of the Akkadian empire in ancient Mesopotamia to the re-emergence of modern China, people constitute the basic denominator upon which societies build their success. The way people around the world think and behave is guided by a complex system of values. These values constitute key factors in the way economies are structured and their potential for further growth. To a large extent, they explain why Japan has gone through multiple lost decades; why Nordic countries accept the highest tax rates in the world, making their societies much more equal; why China has such a large trade surplus with the United States; or why some nations become stuck in a middle-income trap. It is these values, coupled with the right policies, that ultimately determine the destiny of nations.In this book, we explore how the combination of human values and policies affects national economic outcomes. We focus on certain key values conducive to growth: are people of a given nation, on average, hardworking, thrifty? Do they trust each other? Are they risk-takers? The harder people work, the higher the growth potential. Different savings patterns determine, to a large extent, whether a country will grow through investments and exports or consumption, and have generated large global imbalances over time. Trust goes a long way in explaining wealth and income inequalities and the role that governments can play in minimizing those inequalities. Economies with highly risk-averse citizens will stall. Free markets imply a process of creative destruction, free and fair competition, and a level playing field among companies. Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2019 im Fachbereich VWL - Finanzwissenschaft, Note: 2,0, Hochschule Fresenius; Hamburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In dieser Arbeit wird ein Transaktionskostenansatz dargestellt, um die Kryptow瓣hrung in Bezug auf das anscheinend obsolet werdende Vertrauen der Menschen hin zu analysieren und um abzuleiten, inwiefern die Gesch瓣ftsmodelle der Finanzintermedi瓣re unter Ver瓣nderungsdruck geraten werden. Die historische Betrachtung des Geldes zeigt, dass sich dessen Erscheinungsform im Laufe der Zeit immer wieder ver瓣ndert hat. Vor Hunderten von Jahren entwickelte sich die Tauschwirtschaft, in der Waren als Warengeld gehandelt worden sind, hin zum W瓣gegeld, da dieses leicht zu verarbeiten, wertstabil und einfach zu transportieren gewesen ist. Mit dem Z瓣hlgeld, welches sp瓣ter zum gesetzlichen Zahlungsmittel erkl瓣rt wurde, wurde die n瓣chste Entwicklungsstufe eingeleitet. Das Z瓣hlgeld zeichnete sich dadurch aus, dass die M羹nzen Pr瓣gungen erhielten, die zugleich dem Metallwert entsprachen. Dadurch wurde das Wiegen der Metallbaren 羹berfl羹ssig. Bald war es m繹glich, Verbindlichkeiten durch Zertifikate zu tilgen oder gar Kredite aufzunehmen. Auf die Geburtsstunde des Papiergeldes folgte das Giralgeld, welches eine Vielzahl an Zahlungen, auch 羹ber gro?e Entfernungen hinweg, gew瓣hrleisten konnte. Die dargestellte Kurzzusammenfassung der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Geldes macht deutlich, dass der Wandlungsprozess von der Tauschwirtschaft 羹ber die Geldwirtschaft hin zum stofflosen Geld durch das Ziel, vorhandene Transaktionskosten zu senken, bedingt wurde. Transaktionskosten sind auch in unserem heutigen Finanzsystem zu finden, da die Interessenslagen der Kapitalanbieter und -nachfrager voneinander abweichend sind.
