Measuring Eu Inflation
The HICP is a consumer price index which was designed to provide measures of inflation in EU member states calculated using similar methods and thus comparable one with another. The HICP now tracks the inflation rates covering over 500 million Europeans, including the UK, and is also produced by other countries such as the USA. John Astin was the EU statistician in charge of the initial development of this important index and he has the best knowledge of how it was developed in the 1990s. This book is a history of the main development period of the HICP, up to the year 2002 when Astin left the European Commission. The Creation of the East Timorese Economy
Very little has been written on the economy of East Timor since the country's independence in 2002, and no comprehensive account exists of the economic history of the country. The former cannot be properly understood without a knowledge of the historical process that created the present-day situation. This research monograph is the first book to combine a historical analysis of the creation and development of the economy of East Timor from the earliest times to the present, and an analysis of the main contemporary problems facing the East Timorese economy. Volume II offers a detailed analysis of the economy of East Timor, of politics, fiscal policy and social progress. It pays particular attention to structural problems: employment generation and the lack of a modern sector, the modernization of agriculture and the management of the oil deposits in the Timor Sea. The first volume, available separately, considers East Timor from a chronological perspective, as a Portuguese colony, and a country occupied by Indonesia up to national independence in 2002. In Kapitel 2 wird diese Theorie vorgestellt und auf deren Kriterien f羹r die Einsch瓣tzung der Optimalit瓣t eines W瓣hrungsraumes eingegangen. Insbesondere dadurch, dass diese Kriterien vor dem Hintergrund eines 繹konomischen Schocks betrachtet werden, besitzt die Theorie eine hohe Relevanz f羹r die aktuelle wirtschaftliche Krise im Euroraum. Unter ?konomen, die die Optimalit瓣t des Euroraums untersuchten, herrscht eine relativ hohe Einigkeit dar羹ber, dass dieser zum Zeitpunkt seiner Gr羹ndung nicht als optimaler W瓣hrungsraum einzustufen war. Ob sich der Euroraum im Zeitverlauf und insbesondere nach der Finanzkrise 2008 zu einem optimalen W瓣hrungsraum entwickelt hat, bleibt dagegen unklar und ist deshalb ein wesentlicher Untersuchungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit. Bedeutsam f羹r die Beantwortung dieser Frage ist dabei, ob eine 繹konomische Konvergenz zwischen den Mitgliedsl瓣ndern stattgefunden hat. Dies soll anhand der Parameter fiskalische Integration, Konjunktur, Inflationsrate und Wettbewerbsf瓣higkeit literarisch deskriptiv analysiert werden und erg瓣nzt werden mit eigenen quantitativen Untersuchungen, die auf Daten von Eurostat basieren. The Political Economy of Same-Sex Marriage
Same-sex marriage is now legal in twenty-nine countries and the subject of continued debate around the world. The Political Economy of Same-Sex Marriage: A Feminist Critique considers this debate from a political economy perspective. Rather than engaging directly in the now well-rehearsed social-movement and academic for-and-against debates, this book focuses on processes of institutionalization of same-sex marriage and so-called "rainbow families" within (neo)liberal capitalist democracies. It examines how states and markets appropriate same-sex marriage and family to enhance their own political and symbolic capital, consolidating power and profit within existing systems of gendered and raced socioeconomic stratification. Taking a radical feminist, heterodox, qualitative and intersectional approach, this book investigates the political economy of same-sex marriage across three axes: same-sex marriage as institution; same-sex marriage and the market; and the political economy of the "rainbow family". The examination of case studies from different countries and regions enables a comparative analysis that foregrounds cultural, political and economic path dependencies while at the same time highlighting a number of striking commonalities. In all the countries discussed in this book and in most respects, same-sex marriage has been integrated almost seamlessly into a mainstream/malestream political economy of marriage and family and its translation into added market and productive value. Bread was the staple of the ancient Mediterranean diet. It was present in the meals of emperors and on the tables of the poorest households. In many instances, a loaf of bread probably constituted an entire meal. As such, bread was both something that unified society and a milieu through which social and ethnic divisions played out. Similarly, bakers were not a monolithic demographic. They served both the rich and the poor, but some bakers clearly operated within regional traditions. Some lived in big cities and others lived in small towns. Some bakers made flat breads and others made leavened loaves. Some made coarse brown loaves and others specialized in fancier white breads. This book offers new methods and new ways of framing bread production in the Roman world to reveal the nuances of an industry that fed an empire. Inscriptions, Roman law, and material remains of Roman-period bakeries are combined to expose the cultural context of bread making, the economic context of commercial baking, the social hierarchy within the workforces of bakeries, and the socio-economic strategies of Roman bakers.

Landscape History and Rural Society in Southern England
This book applies an economic and environmental perspective to the history of landscape and the rural economy, highlighting their inter-connections through specific case studies. After explaining how the author made his discoveries and when they started, it analyses relations between documentary and landscape evidence. Macroeconomic Determinants of the Coffee Price Volatility in Ethiopia. Application of the Garch-Midas Model
Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Statistics and Methods, grade: 24, Haramaya University, language: English, abstract: Application of GARCH type model is a key for modeling and forecasting volatility for high frequency data such as daily commodity price. Following the same framework, the objective of the present study is to apply the multiplicative GARCH-MIDAS model for daily exported coffee price as proxy of daily total coffee price of Ethiopia over the period of 1-1-2008 to 7-17-2018 with the purpose of fitting and forecasting coffee price returns volatility. The GARCH-MIDAS model decomposes the conditional variance as short-term component of GARCH (1,1) process, and long-term component, with monthly frequencies of macroeconomic variables. In this study exchange rate (nominal exchange rate), inflation rate (general inflation), interest rate (lending interest rate), fuel oil price (price of imported petroleum and petroleum production), total consumption and money supply (broad money) macroeconomic variables were employed through MIDAS specification using beta-weighting scheme to analyze impact of the variables on the long-term volatility component. For fitted ARMA (1,1) of coffee price return ARCH effect test on the residual from the mean model revealed the existence of time varying conditional variance for the selected mean model. A conditional variance model GARCH (1,1) was selected and used to model the conditional variance of coffee price return with Quasi Maximum Likelihood along with Bayesian estimation methods and both estimation procedures indicated the persistence of conditional variance observed even for small sample under Bayesian estimation framework. Asymmetry test show the insignificance of the asymmetric term, while Lundbergh and Terasvirta Lagrange Multiplier and the Li-Mak portmanteau test for the residual of GARCH model show the existence of time varying unconditional variance and made call for GARCH-MIDAS model. In rapidly changing times of today, the financial market is being shaped in all its sectors driven by existing megatrends such as Digitization. Technological improvements and virtual connectivity are yet the latest advancements which push forward the disruption of the financial sector. One recent phenomenon are Cryptocurrencies, virtual tokens that are stored and transferred digitally on a Distributed Ledger (DLT). A DLT-network represents a peer-to-peer environment which enables individuals to operate financial transactions that are operated and recorded in a decentralized and encrypted manner. Every transfer is then stored in the virtual Blockchain. Unlike established mechanisms in world economy, Cryptocurrencies aim to establish a new environment which performs independently, securely distributed and detached from regulations by authorities or governments. In contrast to physical currencies, Cryptocurrencies are not backed by a Central Bank or have an underlying asset or security that builds the fundament for the virtual currency. Values at the Core
Throughout the history of mankind, the rise of societies, whether civilizations, nations, or communities, has been a story of human achievement. From the rise of the Akkadian empire in ancient Mesopotamia to the re-emergence of modern China, people constitute the basic denominator upon which societies build their success. The way people around the world think and behave is guided by a complex system of values. These values constitute key factors in the way economies are structured and their potential for further growth. To a large extent, they explain why Japan has gone through multiple lost decades; why Nordic countries accept the highest tax rates in the world, making their societies much more equal; why China has such a large trade surplus with the United States; or why some nations become stuck in a middle-income trap. It is these values, coupled with the right policies, that ultimately determine the destiny of nations.In this book, we explore how the combination of human values and policies affects national economic outcomes. We focus on certain key values conducive to growth: are people of a given nation, on average, hardworking, thrifty? Do they trust each other? Are they risk-takers? The harder people work, the higher the growth potential. Different savings patterns determine, to a large extent, whether a country will grow through investments and exports or consumption, and have generated large global imbalances over time. Trust goes a long way in explaining wealth and income inequalities and the role that governments can play in minimizing those inequalities. Economies with highly risk-averse citizens will stall. We also identify policies which have the greatest impact on economies. Political stability, much more so than any form of governance, is a precondition for growth. Free markets imply a process of creative destruction, free and fair competition, and a level playing field among companies. An educated workforce is a vital enabler of higher productivity and innovation. Corruption can seriously derail growth once it becomes endemic. Sound fiscal and monetary policies stabilize an economy as it goes through cycles and can greatly contribute to a more equal society and a more robust financial sector.
